THANK YOU May we send our heartfelt thanks to all who gave so generously of their kindness and sympathy in the passing of our loved and respected mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Alice Anita Wiener. Whatever it may have been, cards, visits, calls, food or necessities brought to the house, flowers, prayers or support, whether it was before or after, it is all much appreciated. Thank you to St. Croix Hospice for not only comforting Grandma, but the rest of the family too. Thank you to Pastor Ron for his visits and help throughout this difficult time. Thank you to the staff at Swanson Funeral Chapel for taking care of the arrangements and all other necessary things they so kindly take care of. Thank you to staff of Our Redeemer Church for the beautiful service and lunch. As hard as it was to let our mom and grandma go, your efforts have greatly helped us to deal with our loss. ROGER A. GULLIXSON Roger Anthony Gullixson of Brook Park and Minneapolis died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 surrounded by his children. He was 91 years old. He was born on the farm near Bode, Iowa on July 21, 1921 to Henry E. Gullixson and Sarah B. (Lillegard) Gullixson. He grew up in a close knit family, with strong Christian values, with a love, strong belief and dependence on the Lord. He loved hymns and classical music which were played by his mother on the piano or church organ. He was a hard worker on the farm and loved the rural life. Reading and thought-provoking study were always very important to him. He learned how to pitch a baseball by reading Babe Ruth’s book and throwing rocks at fence posts. He loved baseball and served as his team’s pitcher in high school, college and while in the military. In the last game of his senior year at Randall High School in Iowa, he pitched a “no-hitter.” He attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato for one year and then spent an interesting career in the Army Air Corps, Air Force and Army Reserve. During World War II he served with the 442nd Troop Carrier Group based at Fulbeck and Chilbolton, England. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy and the Invasion of Holland. His C 47 troop transport was shot down by enemy ground fire on Sept. 17, 1944 near Erp Holland. From 1947 to 1954 he served in the Air Force with the Strategic Air Command and Air Attaché Office. During the 1960s and 1970s he served with psychological operation units of the Army Reserve retiring as a master sergeant. During the mid 1950s

he focused on completing his college degree at the University of Minnesota. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Russian area studies. He met Canadian missionary, Lillian M. Lougheed in Hong Kong in 1951. They returned to the United States and married in 1954. Lily Shih, a student of Lillian’s, moved with them to Minnesota and became the big sister of the family. Lillian and Roger’s children are Gordon R., Grace E. and Glenys M. Gullixson. He was always teaching his kids something new during family car trips or nature walks. His love for all the family dogs never ceased. Nearing his retirement years he and son, Gordon purchased a small farm in Kanabec County. He continued to work around the farm and pursued his reading on religion, philosophy and history all the way into his 90s. He had many delightful and thought-provoking meetings with Pastor Ivan Fiske and friend Gordy Gotfredson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 46 years, Lillian; daughter, Sarah Jane at birth; brother, Walter and sisters, Stella, Lois, Ada, Connie and Doris. He is survived by son Gordon (Dawn Halland) Gullixson of Quamba; daughters, Grace Gullixson and Glenys (Tom) Gullixson-Temen of Minneapolis, Lily (Duane) Christ of Freehold, N.J.; grandchildren, Sarah (Calvin) Green of Arkansas, Carl Gullixson of Quamba, Tommy Gullixson-Temen of Minneapolis, Wesley Christ of California and Blanche (Dave) King, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends. His funeral service was held Saturday Dec. 8 at Quamba Baptist Church with Rev. Ivan Fiske officiating. Pallbearers were his children, grandchildren and close family members. Military honors were conducted by the Minnesota Army National Guard and Goldsmith American Legion Post No. 201. A graveside memorial will be held in the spring of 2013. All arrangements were handled by Roger’s immediate family members.

Gingerbread Houses
Fairview second-graders were busily and happily designing, decorating and even tasting their artwork this week as they completed a study of gingerbread houses during an architecture unit in art classes with Mrs. Broekemeier.
Shown here are the collaborating architects from Mrs. Halverson’s room excitedly building and adding to their houses. It couldn’t have been done without the fantastic parent volunteers that emerged to help out (and relive their childhood....?) and all efforts are on display in the Fairview lobby for the upcoming winter programs in December.

Getting Ready for College A new college preparatory program is in full swing at Mora High School. The TRiO Upward Bound Program was started as part of a new grant awarded to Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Upward Bound is a part of the TRiO programs funded by the US Department of Education. The TRiO Upward Bound program at Anoka-Ramsey Community College serves five additional local high schools along with Mora; Braham Area High School, Cambridge-Isanti High School, North Branch High School, Princeton High School, and St. Francis High School for a total student population of 123 high school students in grades nine to 12. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education, enroll in, and graduate from The TRiO Upward Bound students at the Audubon Center in October. The a postsecondary institution with a two- or four-year degree. The TRiO Upward Bound students were able to participate in team building activities at this overnight, program and the services provided are free outdoor retreat. to all participants. Through the program students prepare themselves academically, as well as culturally and socially. Examples of our services include: after-school tutoring, field trips, college visits, college preparation workshops, an interactive summer program, and a week-long trip to reward students for their hard work throughout the year. Students are eligible for the program by meeting federal income guidelines and/or come from a family where neither parent has earned a four-year degree. Students are selected to join the program based on having a need for the services and potential to attend and succeed in college. If you and your student are interested in applying, or if you would like more information about the program, call the Mora Upward Bound Advisor, Kelsey Derner, at 763-433-1848.
Technology is Booming in Kindergarten FOCUS Students The end of first quarter marked great success for seven FOCUS students that earned their way onto the program’s 3.0 club. They are: Kristin L., Sam C., Blake O., Summer S., Lucas W., Ravin P., and Derek K. Congratulations students!! The overall first quarter GPAs of students in the FOCUS program increased by 41 percent. Several students increased their GPAs by 100 percent or more. Way to go FOCUS students!!!
Trevor Cokley will be getting an award on Jan. 24 at the Minnesota Newspaper Conference in Minneapolis. His notes are as follows: Apparently the folks at the newspaper send in work published in their paper to the MNA (Minnesota Newspaper Association) every year for their Better Newspaper Contest. One of the categories was best news photo and one of my photos won something in this category. The papers in each category are placed in conferences based on the size of their reader base and by whether a paper is a daily/weekly paper. I’m told they sent in the photo of the house that was struck by lightning this summer. I took a photo of it since I heard the strike and the house is 200-300 yards behind mine.
High School Concert Choir
Kindergarten students at Fairview Elementary School are bringing technology into their classrooms with the use of iPads, iPods, Smart boards, and computers. Students are learning reading and mathematics skills, along with science and social studies concepts through hands-on interaction with these tools. Upon entering a kindergarten classroom, it would not be unusual to find students practicing letter formation or counting, while playing a game on an iPod. Students might also be interacting with the classroom Smart board, while playing a rhyming or sight word game. Students are also using classroom computers to practice number and letter recognition, counting, making patterns, letter sounds, reading, and many more important concepts!
The following students were FOCUS students of the month for October and November by showing respectful behavior, completing homework on time, having positive attendance, and scoring high on daily points. They are: Sammi M., Jon O., Chloe T., Mahayla M., Blake O., Summer S., Jacob F., Chad B., Jerry E., Wheeler B., Dylan A., Sam C., Congratulations to a job well done!
Contemporary Artists Collaboration Coming Soon! Mora’s CAPP (Comprehensive Arts Planning Program Committee) is eagerly preparing to host three artists in residence across the school district Jan. 7 through 11, 2013. All three artists, Composer Paul Fraser (CA), Visual Artist Mary Johnson (MN), and Choreographer Alison Holland (MN), will collaborate to produce a free weekend community performance with student and community input. “We are really looking to inspire students to think of themselves as artists,” explained Holland, whose residency with the third grade will teach math through dance while engaging students with kinesthetic learning. She will also present an after school workshop on Thursday, Jan. 10, 3:15 to 5pm in Trailview’s Commons for those in grade four and up (adults welcome) in which students will learn how some of the piece was created through chance methods infusing math and movement. They will be invited to learn many of the steps presented in the performance. Fraser’s music tends to be influenced by lo-fi sensibilities and rhythmic complexity as well as general timbre experimentation. He will, with music student participation from the high school create a musical composition to be performed live. Johnson looks forward to creating a yurt-inspired structure for the performance, covered with faux fur and shiny recycled materials. She will also facilitate the creation of student-made wearable art with art students in Judy Broekemeier and Joan Hebeisen’s classes as well as the Art Club and interested public during a couple after school sessions. Watch for more information on those! “CAPP believes in instilling an appreciation of all the arts at a young age, and also providing a variety of arts opportunities to the greater community,” explained long-time CAPP Chair Judy Broekemeier. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide this performance free of charge, and include a Q & A with a professional facilitator.”
Members of Mora High School’s Concert Choir stand in front of some of the food donated by audience members at the Annual Christmas Concert on Monday, Dec. 10 that will be donated to the local food shelf.
The performance will begin with a group of third-grade students presenting dances they created during the week, and will then feature adult dancers performing with the live music composition. The performance will conclude with a Q & A session between the audience and artists moderated by Jessica Fiala of the Walker Art Center’s SpeakEasy discussion program in an effort to provide a greater understanding of the artists’ work. The hourlong performance on Friday evening will take place at Mora’s Paradise Theatre at 7 pm. This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage (Legacy) Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature and the Mora CAPP Committee.

When the Family Circle is Broken at Christmas During this holiday season, a time of joy for most of us, our thoughts turn to the families of our community who are facing their first Christmas without someone they loved. We know many of them, and maybe you do, too. Or you may remember a year when you yourself dreaded the holidays because a death during the year had broken your family circle. As funeral service professionals, we know that grief is especially hard to bear during the holidays. The thoughtful gesture of a compassionate friend can mean a lot to a bereaved individual or family. Caring about someone, and letting them know you care, is the essencee of the Christm Christmas mas spirit. spi p rit.
