DOROTHY E. ELIASON Dorothy E. Eliason, of Mora, Minnesota, died at Eastwood Senior Living Center in Mora, on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. She was 88 years old. Dorothy was born in Braham to her parents Emil and Ruth (Englund) Johnson. She had four older brothers who enjoyed teasing their younger sisters. Dorothy had a fun wit, as she enjoyed teasing them back. She graduated from Braham High School in 1942 and she was thankful for her graduating class as they had many good reunions together over the years. She was united in marriage to Ernest Eliason on June 24, 1950. They started their family living in Golden Valley, a suburb of Minneapolis. Their three daughters grew up in the Robbinsdale School District and attend the Crystal Evangelical Free Church. Dorothy was a “stay-at-homemom” who enjoyed many neighborhood friends and chauffeured her daughters to many activities and events. When Ernie retired they moved to the Mora area onto the Eliason homestead that Ernie had grown up on. They built a new house in 1980, and she had to adjust to living in rural Minnesota. Quickly they made friends with their neighbors, and joined Quamba Baptist Church. Dorothy’s passion was to get together with family
2013 Income Tax Information Following the January tax law changes made by Congress, the IRS announced they will be opening their 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on Jan. 30, 2013. The Minnesota Department of Revenue is aligning with the IRS and will begin processing income tax returns on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The department will not process paper tax returns before the Jan. 30 opening date. There is no advantage to filing a paper return before this date and taxpayers will receive their tax refunds much faster by electronically filing and receiving their refund by direct deposit. Taxpayers claiming residential energy credits or depreciation of property or general business credits will need to wait to file their returns in late February or into March due to more extensive IRS system changes. Typically, these taxpayers file closer to the April 15 deadline. and friends, especially if there was a meal involved. She helped start the Seniors-in-Action at Quamba, where the group would travel to a destination and then eat! She had many dear neighborhood ‘Busy Hour Club’ friends, they met in their homes and enjoyed a social time with a good lunch together. Dorothy also enjoyed her Swedish and Norwegian heritage. Dala Heritage Society appreciated Dorothy’s willingness to provide many good Swedish dishes, like rice pudding and her Swedish squares. Dorothy and Ernie hosted many Swedish people in their home, when Swedish groups came to Mora to perform for the Dala Heritage Society. They traveled to Sweden and Norway many times visiting relatives there. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ernie; her daughter Julie; and her brothers Marvin, Donald, Curtis and Willard; and sister Marilyn. She is survived by her daughters Karen Larson (Paul) of Mora, Lori Beckler (Rick) and their daughter Zoe of Sylmar, Calif.; sisters-inlaw Winnie Johnson of Braham, Joyce Johnson of Minnetonka and Ruby Johnson of San Diego, Calif. She also had many loving cousins, nieces and nephew who will hold good memories and adventures of Dorothy and Ernie from over the years. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Quamba Baptist Church with Rev. Ivan Fiske officiating. Music was provided by Pat Gabrielson and Gordy Hallstrom. Honorary casket bearers were Ron Hallstrom, Randy Hallstrom, Arlen Soderstrom, Elwood Ostrom, Jim Barka, Don Lindquist, Ron Soderstrom and Harold Oslin. Inurnment will take place in the summer at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com.

Thank You!
The Knife Lake Sportsmen’s Club would like to extend our gratitude to the local businesses and residents who so generously provided gifts of merchandise, cash and services to our annual Ice Fishing Contest held on January 12, 2013. We also extend thanks to those who worked with us to help make our event a success: Knife Lake Sanitation, Sanitary Systems, Paul’s Auction Service, Northwoods Steakhouse, the Kanabec County Sheriff ’s Reserves and Boy Scout Troop #191, along with the many volunteers that helped both on and off the ice. Without all of you, and of course the many fishing contestants, we couldn’t have had such a great day! The winners of the biggest fish contest were Troy Ring with a 9 1/4” crappie, Cody Palmer with a 9 1/8” perch, Dave Nyquist with an 8 3/4” perch, Reggie Revier with an 8 3/4” crappie and Andrew Wolfgram with an 8 3/4” crappie. The last three winners, being tied in length, were then placed accordingly by weight. We had a tremendous turnout of 235 anglers, with a whopping total of 47 fish registered during our 2-hour contest! Grand prize raffle winners, drawn by our special helpers Logan Labeau and Michael Hawks, were: Darla Gronlund of Minneapolis - HDTV, Kathleen Purdes of Fridley - $500 savings bond, Curtis Huber of Burnsville - $100 Coborn’s Gift Card, Brian Bienhoff of Isanti - Grand Casino Hinckley stay and Sandra Hippen of Brook Park - $75 cold cash. Super Game Party
Stop in to watch the game and score new memories As legions of people gather on the first Sunday in February to watch Super Bowl XL, one of America’s great traditions, the Super Bowl party, will no doubt conjure up conversations of the best Super Bowls of all time. Though beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, here’s a look at some of the most memorable games since the name was officially adopted in 1969, three years after the National Football League (NFL) merged with the American Football League (AFL). · Super Bowl III, January 12, 1969, New York Jets vs. Baltimore Colts. The only Super Bowl the Jets have ever won or appeared in, Super Bowl III is famous for New York quarterback Joe Namath guaranteeing on the Thursday before the game that his Jets team would defeat the heavily favored Colts. The Jets did just that, winning 16-7 to become the first AFL team to win a championship in the newly merged league. Namath walked the walk in the game, too, connecting on 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and forever etching his name in Super Bowl lore. · Super Bowl VII, January 14, 1973, Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins. When Miami defeated Washington 14-7, they became the first, and last, NFL team to go an entire season without losing a game. Washington’s lone score came on a botched field goal attempt by the Dolphins with a little more than two minutes left in the game. To this day, members of the 1972-73 Dolphins team have a champagne toast whenever the last of the unbeaten teams in the NFL finally loses a game and the Dolphin’s record remains intact for one more season. · Super Bowl XIII, January 21, 1979, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys. Regarded by many football historians as the greatest Super Bowl ever, Super Bowl XIII made legends out of the core players of the Steelers, whose 35-31 win was the team’s third Super Bowl victory in the 1970s. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw for four touchdowns en route to being named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Midway through the final quarter, the Steelers scored two touchdowns in a span of 19 seconds to clinch the win. · Super Bowl XXIII, January 22, 1989, San Francisco 49ers vs. Cincinnati Bengals. Despite being down 16-13 with a little more than three minutes remaining, 49ers quarterback Joe Montana led his team on a game-winning, 92-yard drive, culminating with a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds remaining. It was Montana and the 49ers’ third Super Bowl win of the decade. The game denied Cincinnati their first ever Super Bowl victory, something they still do not have to this day. · Super Bowl XXV, January 27, 1991, New York Giants vs. Buffalo Bills. The first of four consecutive Super Bowl losses for Buffalo, Super Bowl XXV will forever be remembered as “The Scott Norwood Game.” Losing 20-19 with mere seconds remaining in the game, Bills place kicker Scott Norwood missed a 47-yard field goal, handing the Giants their second Super Bowl win in five years. New York’s one point margin of victory remains to this day the smallest such margin in Super Bowl history. Norwood’s miscue was later the subject of a film titled “Buffalo ‘66,” in which an ex-convict seeks to kill a Buffalo kicker for missing a Super Bowl-winning field goal and thus ruining his life.
CRYSTAL Bar & Grill
· Super Bowl XXXIV, January 30, 2000, St. Louis Rams vs. Tennessee Titans. Rams linebacker Mike Jones made the biggest tackle of his life, stopping Titans wide receiver Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired and preserving a 23-16 victory for St. Louis. Despite stretching the ball out as far as he could, Dyson’s stretch fell just short of the goal line.
