Beaver Pond path purchase approved Council votes to buy strip of land between Trillium Woods and pond JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD City council voted to begin negotiations to buy a piece of land between the Beaver Pond and Trillium Woods on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said it would cost the city $300,000 to $500,000 to preserve the natural pathway that would link the future Kanata North Recreation Complex to the Beaver Pond. “We don’t know the cost exactly and it’s a hard one to price,” she said, but KNL will be adjudicating the process to make sure it is a fair price. Wilkinson said she wants to see the matter settled “fairly soon,” before KNL Developments start to clear-cut the land for the 3,200 homes it plans to put in the new subdivision. Council also passed a second motion to ask the National Capital Commission (NCC) to think about

acquiring property in the South March Highlands. “We’ve asked them to formally consider it,” said Wilkinson, who had a meeting with the NCC on Thursday, Sept. 9. “They will post three scenarios for their greenbelt study.” The NCC is looking at adding fingers of land to the greenbelt/ “It won’t be posted until the end of the year,” said Wilkinson. “But it will certainly help a lot.” She added that KNL doesn’t have approval to start clear-cutting yet, but it could happen soon. ‘HAVEN’T GAINED ANYTHING’ Steve Hulaj, creator of the Facebook Beaver Pond group, said this decision will set the precedent for acquisition of the property – and not in a good way. The National Hockey League is expected to announce the all-star game is coming to Kanata on Wednesday, Sept. 15. NHL league commissioner Gary Bettman was scheduled to be on hand to make a “major announcement” at the Chateau Laurier, where the Ottawa Senators were holding their opening-season luncheon. Speculation is that Ottawa has been awarded the 2011-12 All-Star Game, said sources from the City of Ottawa. Phil Legault, a spokesperson for the Senators, said the club won’t comment until after Bettman makes his announcement. The Senators have been on a short-list to host the game for several years now; the Carolina Hurricanes will host the 2010-11 all-star game. “I think we’re a leading candidate for it,” said Gloucester South-Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches, vice-chair of the city’s corporate services committee. “I think we have a lot to offer – our candidacy is strengthened by our Congress Centre.” The City of Ottawa approved a renovation of the Congress Centre to open up more convention space and construction will ﬁnish next April. “We really haven’t gained anything,” said Hulaj, who added the price quoted is too high. “The unfortunate thing is I think we’ve set a precedent. “To me it’s incredibly odd that the city council would undertake to get the NCC to look at acquiring land. What we should be doing is expropriating the entire property.” Hulaj said a piece of raw land – meaning there is no service yet to the area – goes for around $75,000 an acre. But Wilkinson said that price is only for land outside the urban boundary. “Once you have Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) approval the value increases substantially,” she said. Hulaj said although the pathway is a start, expropriating all the land would have been a better move. “With respect to the vote, it would have been nice to see council approve expropriation of the land. I think expropriation would have been the smart move,” he said. “Twenty or 30 metres does nothing to satisfy anyone who is aware of the significance of the land. That’s the width of a driveway.” Wilkinson said council didn’t approve expropriation because all the money has to be paid upfront, money the city doesn’t have. “We don’t have money like that to expropriate the whole land,” she said. “It’s approved development land.”

If I thought it was a nimby (not in my backyard) issue I frankly wouldn’t bother with it, but the issues aren’t just about saving the trees.” He said the studies for the watershed are flawed and flooding could become an issue if this development goes ahead. “We want to be able to work with (KNL). This area is significant; we want them to give it a second thought.” Jim McKenzie, the Green Party’s contact in Carleton-Mississippi Mills said it’s sad nothing was done earlier to prevent the development. “We’ve just been trying to support the group,” said McKenzie. “The Beaver Pond is one of the most unique sites in Canada in its natural state. It’s been sitting there for more than a century – it should be maintained.” “An old growth forest can deal with climate change more effectively because of the biodiversity,” said Caldwell. Expropriation is the best option, said Hulaj, one the city should consider seriously. “Is a pathway in a conservation forest worth saving if the conservation forest is destroyed? One could say yes, at least we’ve saved something,” he said. “What can you say? Sydney Hall’s house has flooded four times in 10 years. She was on hand during a public meeting with city officials about flood control measures for Kanata north on Tuesday, Sept. 7. “It’s not been fun,” said Hall, whose insurance company dropped her flood insurance after the second hit. “The last time I thought this was too much,” she said about having to do the cleaning process herself. Hall contacted a company that quoted her $15,000 to clean up the mess left by the fourth flood. She said she decided to do it herself instead. Hall has lived on Leacock Drive in Beaverbrook since 1985 and said she never had a problem with flooding until the city amalgamated. “We were there for 15 years with no problems.” The city has come up with solutions to the sanitary system’s flooding problem, said Eric Tousignant, who works for the city’s infrastructure services and community sustainability program. Clusters of houses on Leacock, Varley and Penfield drives flooded with sewage after the systems were overloaded during the heavy rainstorm last year. “That’s indicative we have a problem with our infrastructure,” said Tousignant.

Where there’s a will there’s a way

Learn ABCs of city budgeting

It’s been nearly two months since city lawyer Tim Marc threw a glass of cold water in the faces of those attempting to stop development on the Beaver Pond land. Nothing will stop KNL Development Ltd. from clear cutting two square kilometres of ecologically valuable land north of the Beaver Pond, said Marc during a public meeting held at the Mlacak Centre in July. Those were harsh words to hear. But there’s always a but Mr. Marc. Yes, the developer owns the land and city council gave approval for the 3,200-home development six years ago. But nothing is written in stone if the political will exists to save the South March Highlands. Some have suggested the City of Ottawa buy the land, but the cost is prohibitive — coming with a price tag of hundreds of millions of dollars if the land is sold at market value. Not likely to happen. The NCC is willing to consider adding some of the land as “fingers” to its Greenbelt, but they need a few years to first complete its Greenbelt policy. The Endangered Species Act, passed in 1998, unfortunately doesn’t void the land’s zoning. Which brings up a good question: What was the former regional planning council of Ottawa-Carleton thinking when it agreed to zone the land for development? But that is in the past, it’s the future that worries us. The Beaver Pond land can be saved — though it’s looking less and less likely as time moves on — it simply requires political will. The National Capital Commission could save the South March Highlands at a pen stroke (well maybe several pen strokes) by expropriating the land. It’s certainly saved enough cornfields, why not consider preserving some of Ottawa’s most valuable ecological land? But someone must hold their feet to the fire and apply public pressure on an arms-length federal commission. Where there’s a will there’s a way. The question is how much of a will exists to save the Beaver Pond lands?

Parents on hook for user fees To the editor: I saw the most recent editorial cartoon in the Kourier-Standard showing a parent struggling under user fees (re: editorial cartoon, Sept. 10, KKS). I have also noticed that most of the editorial cartoons that deal with taxes are antitax. Frankly, we can’t have it both ways. The money to pay for school supplies and activities has to come from somewhere. If we are not willing to pay for it on our tax bill, then we need to pay for it as user fees. Certainly paying for school supplies is one of our better long term investments as a society. The more educated our children are the more opportunities they will have as they grow older. I do believe we need to watch carefully both the level of user fees and the level of taxes. I am involved in my local school council,

an we have bought things we felt were necessary and turned down items we thought were unnecessary. It has certainly been an eye opener on the monetary presssures schools are under, and the sorts of things they need or want to buy. I would suggest that if we in Kanata want to have an impact on fees that we get involved in our school councils In this case, as in many others where we pay user fees, we can’t have our cake and eat it too. To the editor: Forgive me for I simply do not understand! Each and every year our city council goes through an agonizing budget process whereby each department submits their wish list for the upcoming year outlining both operational and capital expenditures, real and anticipated. Council’s responsibility is to carefully review, question and approve what they consider to be acceptable. Over and above the approved budget, we have been witness to this council “borrowing” millions of dollars for unanticipated expenditures such as buses and now last minute infrastructure projects. How can this council not hang their respective heads in shame? To have to borrow millions of dollars in order to gain millions of dollars in infrastructure money from the federal government and rush to judgment to determine which projects are worthy seems more than a tad ridiculous especially given that property taxes increased by at least 4.9 percent this year. Add in all of the additional user fees and the increase can easily be pegged at 10 percent. Perhaps councillors don’t yet understand that there is only one taxpayer be it federal, provincial or municipal? One must question why there didn’t already exist an established priority list of projects that could have simply be referred to rather than throwing together last minute nonsense such as a judge’s tower or bus driver rest facilities for $1 million which, in and of itself, must be quite the rest facility! It is frustrating enough to realize that staff cobbled together this last minute to-do list without notice but to have council readily approve this nonsense and agree to borrow more than $6 million to complete it, is cause for grave concern. Council still doesn’t get it. Lame-duck status can’t happen soon enough! The city will have to start digging ditches to answer ďŹ&#x201A;ooding concerns in Katimavik, recommends the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Katimavik ďŹ&#x201A;ood investigation committee. The city needs to correct drainage problems in the Vanstone and Belleview drives area that led to the ďŹ&#x201A;ooding of dozens of homes during the large rainstorm in July 2009, said Eric Tousignant, an engineer with the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infrastructure services. The only alternative is to put in a new storm sewer system that would cost each homeowner in the affected area $15,000 to $20,000, he said. Tousignant discussed the Katimavik ďŹ&#x201A;ood investigation and the suggested ďŹ xes during a public meeting held at Katimavik Elementary School on Sept. 13. The city will open up ditches for proper drainage this winter and replace deďŹ cient driveway culverts and install new manhole covers in the fall, to prevent water from entering into the sanitary system.

Leacock Drive is one area that is on the frequent cleaning list since the pipes get blocked regularly. The city is planning on upgrading the sanitary pipe from Leacock Drive to Pentland Crescent. A new pipe will also be installed along Beaverbrook Road. City ofďŹ cials said this should be started in 2011, pending budget approval. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Be prepared to see more nuisance water on the street,â&#x20AC;? said Tousignant, who added in a storm like last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the water could rise halfway up driveways. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Water on the street is a good thing,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At least then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not in your basement.â&#x20AC;? Residents are still encouraged to get the sanitary basement pump and backwater ďŹ&#x201A;ow valve to help ensure against future ďŹ&#x201A;ooding. At least then if a backup occurred, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the neighbourhood backing into your basement,â&#x20AC;? said Tousignant. A catch basin cross-connected with the sanitary system was already disconnected on Varley Drive, which should help moderate the ďŹ&#x201A;ow said Tousignant. Learning with Libby A look into the start of a Kanata kid’s start of her school career JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD The Marceaus, a military family who lives in the Katimavik area, were posted to Ottawa two years ago from the East Coast. Just like one might expect, their house is spotless and their three kids — Dalton, 8, Libby, 4, and Paige, 2, — have solidly-built routines that make morning and evening activities run fairly smoothly throughout the week. Each day has a menu so there is no guesswork at dinner time about what to feed the trio of rambunctious kids, whose blond hair, blue eyes and wide smiles would melt the heart of anyone. Mixed in with this routine is a genuine love of their family and children, something Michelle and Eric will certainly pass on to the newest member of their family, due in January. Sept. 14 was a different day for Libby, who now must get used to a different routine. Libby started her first day of school at Castle Frank Elementary, where she will join Dalton. The day started early, with the kids rising just after 6 a.m. Libby had been getting up with an alarm that played music for a week prior to school to get used to getting ready in time to catch the school bus from the Katimavik Child Care Centre. “She moves like molasses,” Michelle said. On her first day of school, Eric and Michelle were willing to let her stay home a bit later before catching her bus, but after a breakfast of cinnamon and raisin bagels and a banana, she was ready to go to daycare with her brother. Libby obviously looks up to Dal-

ton, a sweet little boy who takes good care of his sisters. He even stopped in the hall at school to give Libby a hug as she hung up her coat and put on her Barbie-patterned “inside shoes.” Drop off in the morning is complicated, with the older kids going to Katimavik Child Care Centre and Paige going to see her babysitter Doreen. The kids are loaded up in the van — complete with three car seats — Paige watches Mickey on the DVD player. Paige has been going to Doreen’s alone since July and is still getting used to the idea of being without Libby. Once Paige is dropped off Michelle heads over to Katimavik to check on the older two, who were dropped off by their father. Dalton walks the five minutes to school, but Libby will take the bus until she is in Grade 2. She sits about three rows back from the driver and even though view is obscured by the bus number on the window, she seems excited when she heads out to meet Mrs. Oldfield. The kids all line up at the front of the school and Libby is the tallest in the group — even the ones in senior kindergarten. She is decked out in a pink Minnie Mouse shirt her nana bought her, complete with pink hair clip and sweater to make the outfit. Normally Libby is really outgoing, but it is easy to tell that this milestone has made her a little shy. She keeps looking back at her mother and tires of having her photos taken pretty quickly. The two adults on hand were enlisted to hold the door for the train of four and five-year-olds on the way to their class.

The kids were all done up in their best outfits, which would probably stay clean for all of five minutes. As an adult, it’s hard not to imagine having a good time in this school, with its blue hallways and murals — complete with a frontfoyer sitting area patterned after Charlotte’s Web. The Marceaus really lucked out with the school; not knowing the area made it hard to pick. “Being in the military you kind of just have to rely on write-ups and stuff because you don’t know the neighbourhood,” Michelle said. She is happy with her choice, and the students look as happy as can be on their way to class. The hallways are a sort of controlled chaos as kids make their way into their respective classrooms. The principal Andrew Canham is right in the mix, hugging one student and opening a water bottle for another. One of the braver kindergarteners walks over to him and says, “My name is Alex.” Libby hangs up her Tinkerbell backpack and Michelle helps her on with her shoes, trading one set of pink for another. She heads into the classroom and sits on the circle. “Pick your favourite colour,” Mrs. Oldfield said. Libby picked purple, she really has two favourite colours pink and purple and when the family moves into their house next week she wants her room painted half and half. Mrs. Oldfield is the perfect kindergarten teacher. It’s easy to tell she’s an old pro when one of the kids wanders away from the circle from time to time and she firmly — but gently — guides him back. The kids sing some songs and

learn to identify cards with their name and picture on them. Then comes a story called Don’t Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus. The story is a read along complete with puppet and the children are captivated. “You can’t drive a busm silly penguin,” Libby said. After the book is done, the kids head to their favourite activity centres. Libby chose the kitchen. “She really loves it, I think she is going to be a nurse or a chef,” Michelle said. “Either is fine with me.” Once things wind down, Michelle leaves Libby to her own devices

and heads back to the office to turn in her visitors’ badge. For the rest of the school year, Michelle and Eric will say their daily goodbyes to Libby at daycare. Everyone will get used to the new routine until Paige and then the baby will start their own school careers. Michelle and Eric hope to be able to stay in one place, but life in the military means they may have to move the kids. Bridlewood man declares bid for Kanata South Rodney Tellez said he hopes he can be the change city council needs. The financial analyst for Zarlink Semiconductor said he decided to run for the Kanata South councillor seat after researching the other candidates and finding he couldn’t vote for anyone. “I thought, I don’t have to vote for these guys, I can run and make a change,” said Tellez. “I’m tired of city council; I’m tired of see- Rodney Tellez ing taxes wasted.” Originally from Nicaragua, Tellez has lived in the west end of Ottawa for 20 years, with the last five spent in Bridlewood with his two children. “My roots are pretty strong here,” he said. A former member of the naval reserves, he said he’s not afraid of a challenge. “It teaches you to be a leader but also how to be part of a team,” said Tellez. “It teaches you how to take on challenges. Maybe you won’t succeed but at least you try.”

CRIME FIGHTER Tellez said a pressing problem in Kanata south is the amount of youth crime. “Kanata south has an issue of crime because the kids don’t have things to do,” he said. He wants to see more affordable programs available for youths in the city to keep them from falling into criminal activities and drugs. “The city charges youth groups for rent,” Tellez said. “I want to look into not charging them, or if we have to, only charging the very minimum.” The City of Quebec has a lottery where the money raised goes towards funding youth groups and activities, he said. “Why can’t we have one in Ottawa?” He also wants to see what can be done about getting a pool for the Eva James Memorial Community Centre. “They have been promised a pool in the last couple of elections,” he said. “I would like to see them get one.” He said he’s working with the centre to see if funds raised during his campaign can go towards acquiring the pool. WASTE OF MONEY “The city has a spending problem,” said Tellez, who wants to see where more money can be saved.

One of the areas he wants to see changed is the tree planting program. He said a number of people have complained that when the greenery arrives, it’s already dead or dying. An option, he said, is to partner with a

nursery and have people choose their own trees. “This way trees won’t be dying during the delivery process. The city saves money and it still works.” He said fiscal management is the biggest issue with council. “I’m not afraid of numbers,” said Tellez, who budgets for seven business units at

Zarlink. He also wants to see the community’s needs listened to and acted upon. More citizen government is needed, he said. “I will listen to the people. I want to give them hope on city council.” He said his platform is built upon what the community needs, something others in the running aren’t listening to. “That’s why I’m running,” said Tellez. “I’m fed up.” TRANSPORTATION He wants to see bus services improved in Kanata south and the city. “I drive to work because the bus service is not convenient,” said Tellez, who wants to see services to Kanata south expanded and made faster. Tellez said he also wants to see parking available downtown for motorcycles. “There’s no parking downtown for them,” he said. “I have creative ideas,” said Tellez. “It’s not more of the same old, same old. KEN hosts allcandidates forum JULIE GOURLEY KANATA ENVIRONMENTAL NETWORK Kanata Environmental Network (KEN) is hosting an allcandidates forum on sustainability in time for the upcoming municipal election. At the event the candidates from Kanata North and South will debate the broad topic of sustainability from an economic and environmental perspective. On Sept. 21 the candidates will share their vision for the future development of Kanata and address the issue of long-term sus-

tainability. Questions will be posed by a number of local organizations, including Ecology Ottawa, Kanata Chamber of Commerce, KEN, and the Coalition for the Protection of the South March Highlands. There will be an opportunity to meet with the candidates and visit their information booths. JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Lili Weemen threw her hat into the ring for the Kanata North councillor seat on Friday, Sept. 10. Weemen, who has run in a federal election in Mississauga South, then in La Beauce, Quebec and later for mayor of Toronto, said the high-tech ward needs to be where Lili Weemen change takes place. “People in Kanata north will be more receptive to my ideas because it’s a high-tech city,” she said. “They are more likely to be innovative. Everything that seems right, they are less likely to be critical; they are more likely to adopt things that are right.” Weemen, a sales and services associate with the YMCA, lives in the downtown Ottawa core, but said she plans on moving to Kanata north soon. Weemen, who is also a volunteer on Clive Doucet’s mayoral campaign, has lived all over the world and said she wants to see Ottawa adopt systems that work around the world. “I’ve lived in many countries, I have a very international perspective,” she said. “My ideas are a little different from others;

they aren’t very localized. Whatever works, right? I pick things up from other places; you always try to adopt a better system.” OVERHAUL TRANSIT Weemen said the public transit system needs an overhaul. She said she wants to see weekly transit passes brought in since most people are paid weekly or biweekly and monthly passes are expensive. She said this is more economical if people have to take time off work as well. “Transit passes, when they were cheap, it was fine to pay monthly,” Weemen said. “Now it’s pricey. If you have to take a week or two weeks off work, this way you have the flexibility. Weekly is very convenient, it wouldn’t be that much money. You wouldn’t lose money if you take a week off.” Weemen said having free transit before 7 a.m. and after 6 p.m. heading from the suburbs to downtown would also relieve some of the rush hour congestion, as would a free shuttle that would run along Wellington, Elgin, Summerset and Kent streets after 7 a.m. This would require only two buses, which would cost around $500,000 each she said. “That would encourage people to leave their cars at home,” she said. “You would only need two buses to do the continual loop. Downtown Ottawa is ridiculous. You go in circles. But that would be replaced by the free shuttle.” She said she would get this money by halting the downtown tunnel. “I don’t want in a city where there’s less than one million to have underground rail. We have to have above-ground

light rail. Why would you be in the darkness when you can see the beautiful city?” She said digging a tunnel is costly to start and maintain and the money would be better served when put towards a better bus system. “Public transportation is not a profitable business,” she said. “What I suggest is stop digging the tunnels. We need better auditing; there’s huge money leakage in the city. Chop one consultant only and it’s enough to pay for one bus.” TAX BREAK Weemen said she wants to see residents receive a tax break for the next two years after the continual hikes that have been imposed. “We have to live a frugal life,” she said. “After that last hike I want to give people a break for two years. After that we carry on.” Weemen said she wants to see more stimulus money going to young entrepreneurs with strong business proposals. “How it’s used is very doubtful,” she said. “Whatever has been spent has been spent pretty lousily. We have to advertise wisely so that residents with great ideas can access the funds. “We don’t need fancy projects because fancy projects, you pay for them. But we have to encourage innovation and ideas.” Weemen said she will not be using signs or a website to promote her ideas, instead relying on doorto-door canvassing, all-candidates meetings and media. “In Kanata we have to be leaders,” she said. “As a high-tech city we have to be leaders.” jessica.cunha@metroland.com

There are few things more Canadian than enjoying a refreshing pint of beer. This is even truer when that beer is brewed with fresh hops from your own back yard. The Ottawa Valley has a rich history of beer making, using time-honoured traditions and fresh ingredients. This weekend, residents can experience the true taste of March Township and surrounding areas at the Craft Beer Tasting event at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site. Local beer connoisseur and sommelier Geoff Skeggs will help you explore the area’s breweries, which have a variety of ales and lagers with rich tastes and amazing selections. “People are always surprised at the quality and variety of local beers,” said Skeggs. “There has been a great resurgence in beer styles, and local breweries are really pushing the boundaries.” Skeggs will lead a craft beer tasting at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site on Saturday, Sept.18 beginning at 7 p.m. to expose people to the different styles and brands of beers they can find in the Ottawa area. “We’re striving to showcase beer on the Hundred Mile Menu,” explained Skeggs, which refers to beer brewed within one hundred miles of Ottawa. Skeggs leads a beer tasting at the historic site every year and this summer decided to include beer from Prince Edward County to add some variety. “We’re trying products that have never been used before,” said Skeggs. “We chose Prince Edward County because they produce the hops that are used in the brewing process.” The tasting will also include beer from local brewers such as Heritage Brewing, Scotch Irish Brewing, Kichesippi Beer

Company and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company. It also features special tastings one can’t find just anywhere, like Heritage Brewing’s Dark Lager New Hop Edition which is brewed using local hops from Prince Edward County. “The brewery only gets enough local hops to make one batch a year, and only ship small quantities to stores, so it’s very unique,” said Skeggs, who has secured a supply in order to share its unique taste with beer lovers at Pinhey’s Point. The tasting will also pair the beer with samples of meats and cheeses that go best with different styles of ales and lagers. “Every beer is food friendly – it’s not just good before the meal, but great with food all the time,” he said. “Some beer even pairs better with food than wine,” said Skeggs, who also teaches the beer course in the Algonquin College Sommelier Program. “It’s more of a European tradition that people in North Americans haven’t yet been a part of.” Ultimately, Skeggs hopes that people learn something new about beer. “People tend to be misguided to think all lagers are light in colour and low in alcohol and ales are dark.” “The fact is there is so much variety in beer styles that colour and flavour is not dictated by the family a beer belongs to, more of the style within that family.” Tickets to the Craft Beer Tasting are $35. A Purposeful Journey: author shares experience Kanata author Barbara Carriere is an inspiring woman; at age 59 she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, summiting after only seven days. Carriere and four other grandmothers climbed Kilimanjaro in 2007 to raise awareness of the plight of grandmothers in Africa. The sixth member saw them off and met them at the bottom of the mountain. Affiliated with the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign run by the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Carriereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s group calls themselves the Kilimanjaro Grannies. Carriere will be giving a presentation to the Twisted Sisters Book Club on Saturday, Sept. 25 about the book, Kilimanjaro: A Purposeful Journey, she and the other grandmothers put together to chronicle their experiences. A lifelong dream to climb the mountain, Carriere said she never thought sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d accomplish the feat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I became older and started doubting whether I could do it. When I saw an article in the paper and then another about this lady going to climb Kilimanjaro, I said to myself, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a grandmother. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in the same age group. If I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it now I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the chance again.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It was a wonderful adventure.â&#x20AC;?

The book club meets periodically over the year to discuss the novels read. Instead of being given a list of books to read, members pick stories that fall under a theme. Seeton looking for Kanata North council seat JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Kanata business owner Jeff Seeton registered for the Kanata North councillor race on Friday, Sept. 10. Seeton, who ran against incumbent Marianne Wilkinson in the last municipal election, signed up just after noon on the last day of registration. “There’s a lot of issues,” said the 40year-old for signing up. “Right off the top the inability for council to get anything done is at the front end of that. Candidates at the council level are keeping their mouths quiet and I don’t think we’re seeing the whole picture of what’s happening in council.” Seeton created JobMatcher.ca, a national recruiting and consulting agency four years ago, which is based in Kanata. Aside from his business background, the married father of two also has experience in politics. “I’ve been a political consultant, worked on federal legislation, municipal bylaws,” said the former president of the Village Green Kanata Town Centre and vice chair of the Kanata Food Cupboard. Seeton has lived in Kanata north for 10 years, in both Village Green and Kanata

Lakes. He said he believes the citizens of Kanata north are not being properly represented on the issues that matter most to them. “Ottawa city council needs to be able to work together to generate new ideas and new ways of doing business,” said Seeton. “We cannot afford to have another four years like the last four years.” ‘MAKES ME SICK’ Seeton said the entire issue surrounding the Beaver Pond “makes me sick.” He said he believes Kanata north needs someone to lead the charge in protecting environmentally sensitive areas. “Kanata North has some of the most significant environmentally sensitive and historically significant land in all of Eastern Ontario,” he said. “The fight is on to save as much of this land as possible but we have been fighting a losing battle. This is because of the agreement that our current city councillor made with the developers in years past. Her decision and the agreement lacked vision and now these environmentally sensitive lands may be lost because of it. We need to have someone new take on this fight and go in a new direction. “This election is about the future of our

But they’re spending my money, your money; we need a different perspective.” He said his business background helps him when dealing with money. “Dollars and cents mean a lot and the way that we spend out money just doesn’t make sense.” The biggest example he said was the cancellation of the north-south light rail project where the city paid out $37 million. “They just threw it off like it was nothing,” said Seeton. “It’s a great deal of money that could have paid for many other things. Kanata kids join OLO’s Turandot children’s choir JESSICA CUNHA KOURIER-STANDARD Five Kanata-area children were chosen to perform in the children’s choir for the opera, by Opera Lyra Ottawa and directed by Brian Deedrick. “I was really, really happy,” said Phoebe Santini, 14. “Out of a lot of kids that tried out only 16 of us made it.” The Bridlewood resident was told to try out by her singing instructor and said the experience so far has been amazing. “Right away I was like I want to do this so badly, I want to have this experience,” she said about learning of the part. “I have learned so much and I have met so many great people too. Another Bridlewood resident, Sara Rushforth, said she’s enjoyed opera since she was young so having the chance to perform in Turandot has been a dream come true. “This is such an awesome opportunity,” said the 15-year-old. “I’ve learned a lot about the whole business of opera.” Puccini’s Turandot is a dark tale of a bewitching princess and her young suitor, who must answer three riddles or face death. LONG HOURS Rehearsals can run into the small hours of the morning leading up to productions. At the Sept. 8 rehearsal, the children’s choir did a run-through from 5:30 until 11:30 p.m. Santini, who just started Grade 9 at Canerbury High School, said the rehearsal schedule can be challenging with the late nights and long hours. “You play such a big part no matter how small the character.

You realize that we have such a big role. You have to give credit to everyone there because everyone is doing such a great job.” Rushforth, a Grade 10 student at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, said the amount of work that goes into a production is incredible to witness. “Seeing what actually happens behind the NAC – it’s amazing what goes on getting the productions ready,” she said. “It’s just incredible.” Eleven-year-old Molly Drinnan agreed. “I never knew what it was like putting on a show so big. Everything is so exciting with all the performers, make up and hair and costumes. The whole thing is so exciting.” Drinnan, who has sung since she was three years old, said everyone they work with has been incredible. “I thought that Mr. Deedrick was so much fun and had a lot of good ideas and involved the kids so much,” said Drinnan, whose dream is to become an opera singer. “Mrs. Brooks our voice teacher is incredible, just so much fun. She’s very good with kids. I like her a lot, she’s fantastic.” Before taking to the stage, the chorus warms up for 15 minutes with breathing exercises, scales and practicing the songs. “I actually like the whole point of going up on stage and showing off that kids can have a really strong singing voice,” said Santini. “Just as kids we have our own little story going on.” FUTURE ROLES Santini said she has enjoyed the experience so much she is thinking of auditioning for another role next year.

“I do really like this kind of opera genre, it’s really fun,” she said. “I’m thinking of auditioning next year. was a little kid and I’d really like to continue it. It’s been a really amazing experience and I hope to have many opportunities like it.” The children’s choir performs along side acclaimed Canadian tenor Richard Margison and New York soprano Lori Phillips. “I’ve learned so much just through watching the big stars,”

Produced by Ross Murray and recorded at Happy Rock Studio in Wakefield, Quebec, Wonder Away is a diverse collection of songs and features some of Ottawa’s finest musical talent. JENNIFER MCINTOSH KOURIER-STANDARD The mayor’s race has heated up over the past few months, with 20 people ready to throw their names in the hat for Ottawa’s top spot at the close of nomination deadline on Sept. 10. The three front runners have been current mayor, Larry O’Brien, former mayor and MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean Jim Watson and Capital ward councillor Clive Doucet. The three top dogs are left after Bay Coun. Alex Cullen dropped out

of the race to seek re-election in his own ward at an announcement on Aug. 31. Cullen — a strong proponent of campaigning without the aid of corporate or union donations — cited a lack of campaign funds and a desire to make sure Terry Kilrea didn’t win the seat as reasons for deserting his mayoral campaign. Jim Watson’s campaign has been focusing on O’Brien’s record. At his campaign launch at Tudor Hall, Watson called the mayor’s four-year term as “chaos.” Watson also promised to build an

KYBA helps 12,500 athletes over 25 years KANATA YOUTH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION The Kanata Youth Basketball Association has been serving the Kanata area for more than 25 years. During that time period 12,500 young athletes have developed through the offered programs. The KYBA has developed the basketball abilities of 655 rising athletes aged between five to 18 years in the past year alone. Both house league and competitive programs are offered and over 1,000 games have been played in the past season. This association doesn’t only cater to athletes but also to coaches and referees. Finally, the association promotes post-secondary education in the community by providing annual scholarships to four players. This year the KYBA is looking at increasing enrolment in all of its programs and at recruiting even more volunteers. years instead of 10 or 20. He also said he would not accept donations from corporate or union sponsors — mirroring Cullen’s stance of “one vote, one cheque.” Andy Haydon announced his candidacy for the mayoral race at a press conference on Sept. 10. It was expected that Haydon’s campaign would focus on his bus rapid transit plan. Haydon says an effective BRT plan could be funded for $5 million — about half or a third of the price of the current LRT plan. Aside from Haydon, three other

We continued to work and get ourselves where we wanted to be.” The Stallions pressed hard at the end of the game to tie the score, but right winger Ryan Donnelly couldn’t covert on two glorious chances – one a partial breakaway and the other a one-timer. The Stallions jumped out to an early lead on a power-play goal by defenceman Carl-Philippe Ouimet 13 minutes into the game and looked like they might cruise from there. Kanata then tallied two more markers on the man advantage early in the second frame as Donnelly and first-round pick Spencer Cobbold made it 3-0. The Stallions went

three-for-eight on the power play in total. Cobbold’s first-ever CHL goal spelled the end of Morgan Hudson’s night in the Kemptville net. Hudson turned over the puck behind the 73’s net allowing Cobbald to score. He was replaced by Ben Curley after allowing three goals on 10 shots. “We thought it was a momentum changer putting (Curley) in,” Malloy said, adding that Curley will start on Sept. 11 against the Pembroke Lumber Kings as originally planned. “It sent the message that we needed to be better. It worked out.” As is often the case, the move ignited the rest of the team. Brenton immediately got the 73’s on the board two minutes later, scoring on Stallions netminder Travis Wilkins. While Malloy thought the goaltending switch helped his team, Dewan said the Stal-

lions lost the contest because of their own errors. Failing to clear the puck, a poor line change, and giving up a breakaway on the winning goal all contributed to the successive third-period goals. “It was our mistakes that cost us the game,” Dewan said. “These are things we can work on.” Although Malloy wasn’t pleased with some aspects of his team’s play – namely their penalty killing – he liked the way his players stuck together. Defenceman Connor McGrath said pulling out a victory in that fashion can only bode well for the rest of the season. “It sets the tempo,” he said. “It makes you believe in yourself and it gives you more confidence.” daniel.bowman@metroland.com

It may still be two years away, but the pressure is already on the Kanata Stallions. Having missed the CHL playoffs in consecutive seasons, and exiting in the ﬁrst round in each of the previous three, management wants to make sure their team is ready for the 2012 Fred Page Cup. The Stallions were awarded the national junior hockey tournament in April, becoming the ﬁrst Ottawa-based team to host it. While playoff champions of the CHL, Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League, and Maritime Junior A Hockey League gain entries to the event, the host team also gets an automatic invite. But the Stallions don’t intend to roll out the welcome mat. “Every year is important, but next year is obviously a lot bigger because we know we’re in the Fred Page Cup,” Stallions general manager Lou Nistico said. “We want to be in the top four next year in the league. “This is a big year because you don’t want to miss the playoffs in a year before the Fred Page Cup.” To go from 35 points – good for second-last place in 2009-10 – to a playoff

Coupled with having the youngest team in the league last year, Nistico chose to recruit players for the 2010-11 season with a two-year plan in mind – eyeing 2012. Nistico brought in defenceman CarlPhillippe Ouilet, who then convinced him to sign former Quebec Ramparts centre Nick Samoluk once he was cut from the Quebec league team. Also added were player from far-off locations like defencemen Will Leedy (Dallas), Taylor Weilert (Rochester, N.Y.), Alex Powell (Newfoundland), and Tim Kavanaugh (Thunder Bay, Ont.), plus right winger and Cleveland native Phillip Nasca, who led team in preseason scoring with five goals and four assists. “This is the year we brought these guys in and we want to develop them and get them ready for the Fred Page,” Nistico said. “That’s what we’re doing. We brought these guys in for two years.” While putting making all the various pieces fit together in a drastic makeover is undoubtedly tricky, the tournament has made finding them much easier. “Some of the kids call us because they knew that we had the Fred Page Cup,” Nistico said. “We got lots of calls all year and we’ll get lots more calls next year. That’s a bonus to get the Fred Page but you still need to go out and see these kids play and make sure they’re capable of playing in our league.” All the additions – which include 2010

Bantam Knights defeat Redskins KANATA KNIGHTS The Kanata Knights Bantam team braved the wind, rain and the Nepean Redskins to win their third straight game with a 15-8 victory on Wednesday, Sept. 8. A strong defence, particularly in the first half, kept the Knights in the game. Harrison da Costa, Mike Cotton, Nick Porter and Jutice Maci led the charge with four solo tackles each. An interception by Carlo Cano and fumble recoveries by Jacob Nicholson and Harrison da Costa put the Kanata Knights firmly in the driver’s seat. The Bantam’s offence dominated the second half led by quarterback Nick Gorgichuck who rushed for 82 yards including a two yard QB keep for a touchdown. Running back Jeffry Marcus rushed for 79 yards and scored the

second touchdown in the game. Receivers Nick Krzniak, Brad Hills, John Ladurantaye and Nick Gorgichuck combined for an additional 127 yards. A safety in the fourth quarter added the additional point. Transit hot topic for Haydon: files for mayor Andrew Haydon, former regional chair and the man credited for building Ottawa’s transitway has entered the mayoral race. Haydon plans to run on the issue of light rail, calling it a waste of our resources. He is in favour of the downtown tunnel — but for bus rapid transit, not light rail. Haydon said using the tunnel for bus rapid transit would leave the city with a $65 million surplus—which could Andrew Haydon be used to increase service to Stittsville and the rural areas. Haydon’s support base would come from the west end as he is credited with building the Nepean Sportsplex and the Nepean National Equestrian Park. He was regional chair of Ottawa-Carleton from 1978 to 1991. He was also reeve of Nepean Township and briefly served as the first mayor of the City of Nepean in 1978.

Haydon is well-known and has a park overlooking the Ottawa River named after him, as well council chambers at Ottawa City Hall. Haydon chose to announce his candidacy at Ben Franklin Place — the former Nepean city hall, because he said his campaign will be about fiscal responsibility and leading Ottawa to Nepean’s debt free example. “I will not be a one-issue candidate,” Haydon said. “But LRT will be the cornerstone of the budget and saving that money will be the best way to move Ottawa to a debt-free model.” He said he would also like to see O.C. Transpo turned into a commission of elected officials who would work to see morale improved. “I think anyone in this community can tell you that O.C. Transpo is mismanaged,” he said. The last time Haydon tried a revival of his political career with a run for the council seat in Gloucester-South Nepean, he was defeated by Steve Desroches. Crash leaves man in hospital KOURIER-STANDARD STAFF A man is in hospital after he was thrown from his motorcycle at the intersection of Huntmar Road and Palladium Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The 40-year-old was treated by paramedics

for serious abrasions to his chest, back and shoulder injuries. Officials said the male rider may have been thrown a distance of 10 metres after losing control of his motorcycle. The man is in serious but stable condition at hospital.
