About us I’m Lucia, I am 22 years old and I’m from Spain. I am a volunteer in the Youth Center. I consider myself a person enthusiastic, active and responsible, and I think that is very important to be open-minded and to have a positive attitude, that’s why I´m ready to live the experience and learn all I can. K.A.NE’s staff Hello, I am Filaretos Vourkos. For the last 10 years I am working in the field of Non-formal education as a volunteer, youth worker and youth trainer. 6 years ago, I decided to create the Youth Centre of Kalamata, in order to initiate youth work in Kalamata and promote active citizenship as factor for change. Hi my name is Fotini Arapi and I am project manager in K.A.NE. organization and responsible, among other things, for all sending motilities (sending EVS volunteers, participants in training courses, interns, etc). Apart from my work in K.A.NE., I also volunteer in the Youth Centre of Kalamata, a volunteer initiative managed by a team of local volunteers. I am very proud of and I love the Youth Centre, its dynamic atmosphere, and most of all, its natural inclusiveness that allows everybody to feel “at home” there. See you around :-D

Hi, I’m Jelena Scepanovic, an EVS coordinator in KANE and the volunteer of the Youth center. I came from Montenegro 2012 as an EVS volunteer. I really liked the idea of the Youth center and the work that KANE does, so I decided to stay and be part of it. 6

Interview Eli VS. TAXI-Master

The excellent taxi driver A conversation between a passenger and a taxidriver. The trip goes from Athens airport to Paralia Kalamatas. It’s an amazing day for a taxiride. Leonidas Malamas is 23 years old. He grew up in Kalamata with two sisters, father and mother. Now he lives alone with his dog, ’ofcourse my mother cook for me, and clean my house’, he says satisfyed. ’I love childrens, cars, motorbikes and trucks’, he says, ’but all the things with a limit, not too much, but a little of everything. I cant go for ride with my motorbike every day for example, only sometimes, to enjoy.’ *From the radio we hear traditional greek music, ’I love the music’ he says while moving his hands dancy in the air.* He used to work as a doorman at a Bouzoukiplace for four years, and he also passed two and a half years transporting olive-oil and figs with a truck. Now he has been a taxidriver for two 8

and a half years. Leonidas father is the owner of the 30 year old taxicompany, so it was very natural for him to do the same. They are driving the distance Kalamata- Athens, but the price is something completely different then the regular taxies. Their strategy to make it cheaper is social, and saving the enviroment at he same time. ’When we go, we take more people at the same time, he says, we take maybe one from Kalamata, and maybe some more come on the way so its cheaper for them, because they share the expences with others. When we come back we take new people.’ ’I am a taxiedriver, but I have very different life then the citydrivers! They sit there, look at the girls, drive a few kilometers every day, have a coffee. They never clean their cars’ he says, ’I clean my car every day, because one important thing for me is to do my job very very good. I want to give the passenger a good experience, to come back, and to not feel uncomfortable. I want to have a good name, not to talk bad about me. Ok..I am not a very good boy, but I am trying. We are not perfect, anyone, but I want to be excellent in my job. I havent got problem, all the things are cool’, he says, ’I iust like my things very clear, I have to do the things excellent or not at all.’ 9

So tell me then, how can you be professional as a driver? What do you do during the ride? ’I have to be careful with the music, to not play too loud, and play what they want. I have to be polite also when I say something.. Sometimes I just tell them I am married and that I have one child, but then they want to come and meet them so I have got problem. The grandmothers tell me they have got a good girl, ”come with me to see and marry.” Then I just turn up the music, so I can’t hear 13

them..*laughs loudly*. Or I say ”yes yes I will come to see”, I ask if they have a house to stay, because the father of the wife has to give the groom a house, so if the answer is no I dont like. They say ”you only want the girl for the money!?She is very good in the house!! Cooking etc!!” I say ”ok but if we dont have a house, it doesent help that she is good in the house?” This way I stop the comversation, then the grandmothers dont know what more to say.’

What was up?

31.03 We had an opportunity to learn and talk about healthy, balanced diet with a professional dietitian and a friend of the Youth Centre, Sofie Kostea. With the use of easy games and interesting, but at the same time quite strong videos, Sofie explained to us how to eat properly, so to live long, illnessfree lives.

01.04 It was an extremely important day for us, since we were celebrating 7th birthday of our beloved Youth Centre! Thanks to amazing promotion done by our lovely pair of b-day bears, we could reach to and invite many people to enjoy this beautiful moment with us. How was it? It had a lot of dancing, accompanied by music of DJ Spiros, amusing stand-up done by our youngest, yet very active volunteer – Stavros, very tasty birthday cakes, presentation of a document about the Youth Centre, prepared by our talented Marie-noelle, and – of course – a lot of fun! Also, the founder

of K.A.NE, Filaretos, thanked all the volunteers for their input and handed them specially prepared diplomas. One word can describe this night very well, and it is simply ‘amazing’. Thank you all for being there!

07.04 Together with Adamantia we had a chance to create cool, very interesting lamp-shade out of old newspapers – you can admire it now in the Café area of the Youth Centre.

Past weeks were also the time of big changes in our building. With help of local volunteers and donations we were able to repaint the first floor, together with cafĂŠ. A friend of the Youth Centre, Vladimir, build new furniture for us, and finally the place looks clean and more cozy. BIG THANKS to everybody involved in the process of refreshing our common good! Soon we will also refresh the staircase and the second floor.

What a mentor does is actually support and motivate the mentee and help him/her find the way when he/she is “lost”. For me the relantionship between mentor and mentee should be based on trust to be easy for the mentee to talk about things that happen in his/her life.

INVEP 2.0 seminar, where do I begin. It was one of the most beautiful and inspiring experience of my life that evolved me a little bit. Well I was in the right place at the right time. My favourite place on Earth Locronan

Locronan is a tiny village located in the most western area of France, the department FinistĂ¨re of Bretagne. It is famous for its architectural treasures and monuments such as the Saint-Ronan church, and has been granted the label of the most beautiful villages in France.

All of its electrical and telephone cables are invisible for they are buried in the ground, and with the paved streets and the granite houses you can feel like you are back in the Middle Ages. It is allowed to drive inside the village but most visitors park their cars at the entrance, where thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big parking lot in a grass field, so you can enjoy walking around among the hydrangea without seeing any other vehicle than the cart dragged by a huge horse around town for the kids.

Apart from the church and its square you should see the chapel Notre-Damede-Bonne-Nouvelle, the museum of art and history, or even go outside the village and climb up Menez Lokorn, Locronanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (tiny) mountain, to enjoy the view of the Atlantic ocean. When you feel hungry you can stop at any of the restaurants and creperies to try the traditionnal crĂŞpes of Bretagne. Most of them are in the main square but my favourite one is behind the church, it opens at 12.00 precisely and you will be warmly welcomed in by Monsieur before enjoying the food prepared by Madame.

I have been going to this village with my family since I was a little kid, to have a nice dinner after a long day at the beach or just to walk around on a rainy day (and we have a lot of them in this area), and to me it is a peaceful, magical and magnificient place completely out of time and I hope that if you ever go there it will enchant you as it enchants me.

Recipe:

Brainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chocolate cake Chocolate cake is tipical traditional food of Kalamatian EVS 2015-16. Everybody knows is good for our brains. ingredients: 200g dark chocolate 200g butter 3 eggs 200g sugar 200g flour

First of all we have to melt a butter in pot. After butter melt a bit we add dark chocolate and we mix it till we get homogenous chocolate cream.

In a bowl we mix eggs with sugar(a lot of sugar). to the other bowl we have to put flour and we add melted chocolate and we have to mix. Then we put eggs and of course we MIX. ready dough we put to mould(with special paper for baking).

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes on 175 Co On top we have to put melt chocolate.

STREET-OPERA PROJECT 16th April 2016, 20:30, Agioi Apostoloi Place, Kalamata

As the first pre-event of KALAMATA STREET FESTIVAL 2016, we will start this spring with the Street Opera Project! The idea: We are all witnesses on those days of horrible crime; significant moments will mark our time for the upcoming future in Europe. Terror, assassination attempt, cross-border streams of refugees and states that are swamped, destabilizing impact on neighboring countries, mistrust and an alarmingly rising right-wing populism everywhere in Europe. The bubble threat to burst â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or even did. 44

But there is still a light on a horizon. We only have this earth, this life, and this chance to make the world around us a little better. The world is ours. What kind of a world do we want to live in, and how do we want to design it? Music brings people together. That is our personal advantage as artists, insignificant if we are only a small artists or already a popular artist â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we are able to create an artistically pacific power and spread it out in the world. And this becomes even stronger in projects like ours. Music is the bridge; people can forget everyday life - breathe deeply and finally enjoy only the music, the dance and the theatre and Kalamata - their homeland in all its beauty. As a sign, as a hope, as a motivation, that there is more. The project: As an echo and in an absolutely unique way the Street Opera Project will bring together different artistic groups of Kalamata and as well, separate points of view 45

to look on art. All the people are passionate in music, theatre, dance and paintings. From the folkloric singer to the rock band, from the dancing class to the women choir to the theatre or climbing club or the soup cooks... everybody! All this persons will become part of the huge show, performed in the public space of Kalamata, at the Agioi Apostoloi Place, 16th of April. How? Street Opera Project will present in an artistic way the subjects of freedom, liberty and the history of Kalamata by the local network of artists, community organisations, and inhabitantsâ&#x20AC;Ś This project gives the possibility to the audience to live intense and memorable artistic experiences in the public place of Kalamata. The Agioi Apostoloi Place is already rich in history. But in this project we will go a step further in the present: with all the artists we search a contemporary vision of our future. Reconstructed after the earthquake in 1986, Kalamata was reborn. It was 30 years ago. But since these days Kalamata has shown a big development in building houses and awakens to life again â&#x20AC;&#x201C; also in a cultural way. 46

The Street Opera Project tried to collect races of the cultural richness of Kalamata and now we want to reap the benefits of these efforts. Today, it is the time for awakening of the consciousness around the art that remains and prospers within Kalamata. Street Opera Project, an artistic earthquake! Let’s rock’n roll now for Street Opera in Kalamata! We are proud that we try this experiment to connect all those artists in the city of Kalamata. Our project makes us to look ahead with confidence in those days. We are glad to be in the boat with you guys from Kalamata! LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN AND SEE YOU AROUND!
