Carnival in Italy is a symbol of joy, merriment, color, but most of all an opportunity to eat, drink and have fun all together before Lent. About a month before Ash Wednesday, Italians celebrate for many weekends with big parades, imaginative masks and tons of brightly colored confetti, similar to the Greek carnival The origins of this event can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, when Bacchus and Saturn were worshiped. Despite its pagan origins, the event was so widely celebrated and the tradition so powerful that it was quickly modified to fit Catholic rituals. Carnival is traditionally celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, but the weekend before is marked by equally large or perhaps more significant activities. There are many famous carnivals in Italy such as those in Viareggio or Ivrea, but surely the most famous and well-known is the one in Venice, and it happens to be right near my city
