FINANCE FIRMS HEAT MAP Using ArcMap 10.5, CityEngine, and Photoshop, I created this 3D heat map of financial firms in Downtown Miami. Draping the heat map raster over Downtown Miami’s buildings provides greater context to stakeholders and turns a 2D map into a stunning visualization that enhances the audience’s sense of place.

3D POPULATION DENSITY MAP

This map was created for the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA) for the 2018 Greater Downtown Miami Demographics Report. 3D extrusions of Census Block Groups were preferred over 2D chloropleth maps to demonstrate density. This map was created using ArcMap 10.5, CityEngine, and Adobe Illustrator.

3D POPULATION DENSITY MAP

This map was created for the DDA for the 2018 Greater Downtown Miami Demographics Report. Whereas the previous 3D Population Density Map showcased neighborhood densities, this map shows daytime population throughout Miami-Dade County by Census Block Group. Using 3D extrusions highlights Downtown Miami as the center of gravity for the county. This map was created using ArcMap 10.5, CityEngine, and Adobe Illustrator.

3D EMPLOYMENT INDUSTRY MAP

This map was created for the DDA as part of a series of data visualizations revealing the geospatial distribution of jobs by employment industry (NAICS 2-digit codes). This map shows where professional services (NAICS 54) jobs are throughout Miami-Dade County by census block group. This map was created using ArcMap 10.5, CityEngine, and Adobe Illustrator.

“MIAMI POOP MAP”

In 2015, Downtown Miami experienced an uptick in sanitation issues relating to human waste from Downtown’s homeless population. The Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA) advocated for public restrooms to be installed for the public to use. This map was created to show policy makers the gravity of the issue. As a GIS & Planning Assistant, I created this map using ArcGIS 10.2.1 and decided to use the “poop emoji” rather than default Esri symbology to ensure stakeholders understood what each point was representing. The map not only lead to the sucessful installation of public toilets, which led to a drastic decrease in the occurance of human waste in the public realm, but also received national news attention. This map was featured in articles by CNN Money, The Washington Post, and Huffington Post.

2D THEMATIC MAPS

The map on page 9 was created for Hillsborough County as part of the Tampa Innovation District Master Plan Existing Conditions Report. This map shows parcel values per square foot for the project’s study area. I created this map using ArcMap 10.2 and Adobe Illustrator. The map on page 10 was created for the City of Baltimore as part of The Hanover Street Bridge Study. As a Senior Analyst at AECOM, I created this map using Census LODES data to show where residents of Baltimore’s Locust Point neighborhood work by zip code. This map was created using ArcMap 10.2 and Adobe Illustrator. The map on page 11 was created for the Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Mami Office of Resilience and Sustainability for a project with the Urban Land Institute (ULI). The ULI came to Miami to evaluate the local efforts to prepare for and mitigate against climate change and sea level rise. Fullpage infographics were preferred for demonstrating economic information to ULI. This visualization was made in ArcMap 10.5, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Excel.

BEFORE

CONTEXT MAP REDESIGN

AFTER

12

The Miami DDA’s Research Section creates in-house economic and demographic reports. The “before” is a contextual graphic of nesting circles used to demonstrate Greater Downtown Miami’s place within Florida. This graphic was used for the 2016 Greater Downtown Miami Demographics Report. The “after” is a context map redesigned from the nesting circles graphic for the 2018 Greater Downtown Miami Demographics Report. The report itself shifted from a purely downtown-focused narrative to a regional narrative and Greater Downtown Miami’s role in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL MSA (metropolitan statistical area). This small context map takes up the same amount of space on the page as the previous nesting circles. in addition to taking up the same amount of limited space available, it provides greater context as to where Greater Downtown Miami is in the scheme of Florida’s metro areas and the state as a whole. The redesigned context map was created using ArcGIS 10.5 and Adobe Illustrator.

INTERACTIVE WEB MAP

I created this interactive web map for the Miami Downtown Development Authority to track development projects in Greater Downtown Miami’s Development Pipeline. This web map is used by brokers, developers, investors, and other relevant stakeholders for market information. I created this app using Esri Story Map’s Shortlist template and made customizations with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The map can be viewed here.

O R L E A N S MAP PRINTS

Inspired by the trend of using geographic features for abstract art, I created poster (18x24) prints of cities all over the nation as a hobby. These were created using ArcMap 10.3.1 and Adobe Illustrator.

FLOATING ISLANDS

Inspired by Miami’s art scene and everchanging skyline, I was curious to see how Christo and Jeanne-Cluade’s Floating Islands work would look with today’s skyline. I recreated the famous piece using ArcMap 10.5.1, CityEngine, and Adobe Photoshop.
