KANIKA JAIN

Indore, India

The way in which the act of creation provides personal fulfillment is the starting point of my interest in architecture. I believe that architecture profoundly impact lives in many ways, shaping how we feel, perceive, and interact with our surroundings. It extends beyond mere structures, encompassing the intricate details that shape our experiences.

Through my work, I strive to create environments that resonate with people on emotional and sensory levels, enhancing their daily lives and fostering a deeper sense of connection with the built environment.

01 HOSPICE CENTRE

Shilaj, Ahmedabad

About the Project :

A hospice is a healthcare facility that provides specialized form of support dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals facing advanced, life-limiting illnesses like cancer.

This thesis examines the impact of human-centric design on hospice architecture, with a focus on creating environments that nurture the psychological well-being of patients during their final journey.

The project focuses on non-traditional therapeutic medical treatments that stimulate the senses and features a humanistic approach to space.

About the Site :

Location : Shilaj Lake, Ahmedabad, India

Site Area : 1600 sq. m

The site is situated near Shilaj Lake in Ahmedabad, a location chosen since it is in the quieter zone of the city and also has good connectivity to the city.

Also the proximity to nature provides an ideal setting for patients and families seeking peace. The site is a privately owned area situated in a residential area.

The render illustrates the architectural design of a ward unit that embodies a simple, home-like aesthetic while maintaining high functionality. The thoughtful scale of the structure ensures a welcoming and familiar atmosphere.

Strategically placed windows and doors maximize ventilation, fostering a strong connection between the inside and the natural environment outside. These openings also permit ample sunlight to penetrate the space, enhancing the sense of openness and integrating the unit seamlessly with nature.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Communal Spaces

COMMUNAL SPACES

the in-between communal spaces that serve as connectors or transitions between different functional zones or rooms within the structure fostering a sense of community and connectivity among occupants

Spatial Dichotomy

SPATIAL DICHOTOMY

the deliberate contrast between introverted, private spaces and extroverted, public spaces, creating a balanced and dynamic environment for users

Framing Light and View

strategically positioning and designing openings and skylights to frame and enhance natural light and views, enriching the spatial experience within the built environment

Intimate Spaces

the creation of spaces that evoke a profound sense of personal connection, privacy, and a sense of belonging

Central Movement

the secluded, introspective areas with bustling, communal zones, creating a dynamic environment that balances solitude and social interaction within the architectural context.

Intersection of Spaces

OVERLAPPING OF SPACES

intersection of secluded areas for personal reflection and shared spaces that encourage social interaction and support, fostering both solitude and companionship

DESIGN STRATEGIES IN A HOSPICE CENTRE

FORM EXPLORATION

The aim of the project was to design both social and private spaces that evoke a sense of journey.

The focus was also on creating transitional spaces that lead users through a central area designed to be social and interactive, reminiscent of the communal spaces in pol houses. Moving outward from this hub, the spaces gradually transition to quieter, more private zones, establishing a clear hierarchy from social to private areas.

In these iterations, I experimented by connecting the intersection of private wards with the intersection of amenities, where these intersections will act as nodes These nodes could be a courtyard, a nursing station, common living, etc.

Connectivity With Nature

The primary objective of this project was to craft a human centric architectural design that embodies the essence of a home-like environment. Emphasis was placed on optimizing natural light and ventilation throughout the space, thereby enhancing the overallcomfort and well-being of its occupants.

The design integrates communal areas for socialinteraction alongside private spaces tailored to accomodate both collective gatherings and individual private spaces. A key aspect of the design approach was to instill a PLAN, SECTION AND SPACES

The render highlights the architectural design of a central courtyard that connects the communal dining area with the shared play area.

This courtyard not only fosters a harmonious and inviting environment but also enhances natural light and ventilation.

The doors have been designed in a way that allows transpareny between the common dining area and the courtyard.

View from outside the Ward depicting connectivity with the nature and multiple doors and windows for light and ventilation

The render showcases the common dining area for the patients, which is connected though a central courtyard. The use of wooden doors and windows introduces a natural color palette while maintaining transparency between the inside and outside.

02 TRAINING CENTRE

Jaspur, Ahmedabad

The training center anticipates dynamic functionality, designed to adapt over time to accommodate diverse training activities. The spatial configuration is conceived as flexible and responsive, allowing for seamless transitions as the center evolves to host various training programs in the coming years.

Keeping in mind the current situation the training centre will be a hub for skill development and education, fostering empowerment and sustainable growth within local communities. It serves as a catalyst for socio-economic progress, addressing the unique needs and aspirations of the rural population.

About the Site :

Adaptibility of spaces to serve multiple functions, allowing for dynamic use and rearrangment, emphasizing the seamless transition from one space to another.

This concept is manifested through open floor plans, movable partitions, and multifunctional furniture, allowing spaces to transform seamlessly from one use to another.

Open Planning

Minimal use of walls creating a more expansive and interconnected spaces fostering a sense of unity and connectivity amongst

Understanding Grid

The collage is based on a reading and it is a proposal for a city without streets and plazas and it will be composed only as an array of spaces framed by walls.

It talks about how the city walls are intended as an urban rchitectural object whose purpose is the coincidence of fixity and flexibility.

Cross Axis

An axis serves as an organizational principle often intersecting or terminating at important spaces. Secondary axis that intersects the primary axis, creating additional points of interest and spatial organization.

Intersection of Axis

Axis serving as an organizational backbone intersecting at communal spaces such as courtyards or transitory spaces.

URBAN MARKET

Isanpur, Ahmedabad

About the Project :

In the Indian context, the Urban Markets project presents an enormous opportunity to create multifaceted spaces. This studio critically examines the most vibrant forms of the urban fabric, the Bazaar.

The approach is an amalgation of social, cultural, and ecological components in combination with the exploration of historical, economic, spatial, and power dynamics. The studio also incorporates the idea of water as one focus element which has been utilised in all the sites and how the design responds to it.

About the Site :

Location : Isanpur Lake, Ahmedabad, India

Site Area : 1600 sq. m

The site is located in Isanpur, Ahmedabad. The area has a mix of residential buildings, commercial establishments, and local markets.

The main aim of the studio was to design a market for the people of Isanpur which can provide them everything under one roof and also generate revenewand employment both.

The Isanpur lake is currently being used as a dumpyard for people to throw garbage. So the aim was also to give lake it’s own Identity .

The render illustrates the entry of the market

04 INDIGO MUSEUM

Jamalpur, Ahmedabad

About the Project :

The brief of the project was to design an Indigo museum that can help people know more about Indigo plant, how it’s made and it’s uses. It was also to design a place which can be a tourist spot to enjoy and learn something new and interesting about the Indigo plant and the process of making Indigo dye.

The concept of the design was to create spaces in a way that it seems as if one space is almost flowing and merging with the adjacent spaces. Designing the space with hexagonal modules created more scope for views and walls that can be used to display larger no. of paintings. The uniformity of hexagons also facilitates a seamless connection between adjacent cells forming a strong structure that resists distortion.

About the Site

:

Location : Jamalpur, Ahmedabad, India
