hello! Thanks for stopping by, my name is Kanishka Sonthalia and it’s nice to meet you. I am a final year graphic design student at MIT Institute of Design, Pune. What you will see ahead is a showcase of the most interesting work that I’ve done in the past three and a half yrs. Personal \ I tend to get inspired from basic everyday things and tend to implement them in some form or the other. I would like to bring in a change and like to get my hands on doing something dynamic in approach and in it’s solution. I’m quite interested in branding, publication, anything to do with photography and pen & ink illustrations. My latest obsession has been type design. :) Drop me a line. It would be great to hear from you. +91 9970041647 kanishka.sonthalia@gmail.com
branding
\
Branding was a month long project, wherein we had to introduce a hypothetical brand which was developed on the basis of brand personality, brand experience, brand strategy followed by it’s visual identity and the brand manual. Photography has always been one of my keen interests, so I chose to brand ‘Zarah Hooda’- a surreal fashion photographer.

publication

For publication I got to work on the college prospectus. There were two versions to the prospectus; the mini prospectus (for design professionals) and the main prospectus (for aspiring students). The main prospectus is currently at it’s printing stage. Alongwith the prospectus, I’d also made a Diwali Greeting Card for the college to send out to companies and design professionals.

user experience
\
Objective: To design an email application for a 7 tablet device which is primarily used at homes among family members having various levels of computer literacy. The interface had to be simple and intuitive that allowed sharing of documents, photographs and links. The final interface was a result of detailed research, wireframes and user tests. Challenge: Technological constraints & Limited screen space.

packaging
\
The brief was to take an existing brand, study it’s packaging and spot design oppurtunities that would improve it’s shelf value. Product: Tang 500gm standup pouch I developed a packaging that would increase it’s shelf value and solve the current packaging issues.

symbol design
\
We were asked to make a symbol based on any concept (eg; open, life). ‘Touch’ w.r.t touch screen electronics was my chosen area.
A symbol for ‘touch’ with respect to electronic devices. I started of by keeping Microsoft Surface in mind. Tried to understand the multi touch aspect of it. To simplfy touch further, I concentrated on single touch.

photography
\
Photography is a creative outlet through which I can show my passion. I can say that I’m a bug which rapidly got morphed from a casual snap shooter into a fanatic photography enthusiast.

curriculum vitae Kanishka Sonthalia Born on: 8th Feb, 1990 Education: SSC, Utpal Sanghvi School, Mumbai, 2005 HSC, Mithibai College (Science), Mumbai, 2007 Currently I’m doing my Undergraduation Diploma Degree in Graphic Design from MIT Institute of Design. I will be convocating in March 2012. Aim: - Someday, silently, I would really like to do something radical in the field of photojournalism and typography. Attributes & Skills: - “Design is not just about the final product, it’s more about the process”, well this thought has fairly well become a part of my ecosystem. - I believe as a designer it is extremely important for one to dissociate himself with what he thinks is appropriate than what should be appropriate. - I believe that conceptualization is incomplete until it is established and followed by a detailed process. - I’m well aquainted with both windows and macintosh. - Extremely competent with softwares like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I have got my hands on Adobe Premiere, Dreamweaver, Flash and Soundbooth as well. Experience: - I’ve done a 6 week internship at Exit Design, Bangalore. During my stay at Exit Design, I’ve worked on couple of projects like; Corporate Identity & Website for ‘Doodle Co.’ Emailers for “Company of India’ Collaterals for a play, ‘The FireRaisers’ - I‘ve designed a brochure showcasing student’s work (for design professionals) and the college annual prospectus 2011 (for aspiring students) for MIT Institute of Design. - Currently I’m working on a freelance branding project for a ayurvedic company. Extra Curricular Activities: - I have been playing Table Tennis since I was 9yrs old and have represented my school and college till state level. I have backed few medals at DSO tournaments. I have learnt how to grow because of this sport. Outdoor competitions gave me the oppurtunity to interact with soo many people from different zones which was such an eye opener. I can very well relate that experience to my stay at MIT ID. - I have volunteered for the Pune Design Festival, 2008 which was held in Pune. - I find it extremely important that one should keep in touch with the latest happenings in their respective fields. Attending the Kyoorius Design Yatra 2010, motivated and helped me broaden my perspective. - I had recently attended a workshop on typography taken by Peter Bil’ak, founder of Typotheque. This was a two day workshop in association with Kyoorius Exchange. It was a overwhelming experience! Interests: - I would be quite interested to work on branding, publication or anything to do with photography and pen & ink illustrations. Getting to work on a branding project with photography and pen & illustrations as a backbone would be one of the best thing that could ever happen! - Music inspires my work to a very great extent. When it comes to conceptualizing, frankly speaking I’m kind of handicapped if I don’t have my playlist around.
