01 The Band Mobility Hub in Stadt Bonn The site is in city of Bonn, in Germany and is located 5km far away from Bonn central station. Currently there are parking lot and under ground subway station at the site. As a strategy of city of Bonn, the demand is that making new mobility hub as a high-rise building connected with subway station and promote park and ride. On the other hand, as a recent trend, the demanding for co-working space and co-living space is improving. Thus, this building should be designed as new mobility hub for future, which is combined with new type of usage like co-working or co-living. As thinking about them, this mobility hub is also considered car sharing, rental bike, or e-scooter because co-worker doesn't mean that he stays the one place permanently. Therefore, this building could have so many aspects, function, and so on. I suggest the new BAND as a connection of transportation/mobility and also as counterpart of many aspect which is assumed to happen in the building.

Concept As a mobility hub, people would come here by different way and different purpose, which means there are so many kinds of aspects in this site. This building should have function which collects people's flow and divides them to each functions. Thus, there should be a very point as a buffer to make an order in this chaos site. This one can be an iconic shape of this building.

02 Dom Complex Under construction museum Cologner Dom - one of the most famous cathedral in the world will have been under reconstruction for 60 years. During this, the south tower will have been covered with scaffoldings. However, cologner Dom is a symbol for citizen in cologne and the most important landmark for visitors there. We, as architects have to think about what we can do during construction, how we can make people enjoy even though there are scaffoldings. The point is that we should interpret history and transfer this as new perspective and make something new which coexists both of Dom and scaffolding. The advantage of having scaffolding for visitors is that they can easily look the details of cathedral, so it is very important how to show the cathedral with new way bu using architectural language, light, sounds, and so on. I suggest new space by using shipping container and scaffoldings, which is basically available to use again because this museum might be a kind of temporally museum so we have to think about deconstruction. Each shipping container is cut out for showing details of cathedral combined with light. These approach make cathedral itself museum.

How to avoid construction

Site&Issue

Cologner Dom - one of the most famous cathedral in the world will have been under reconstruction for 60 years. During this, the south tower will have been covered with scaffoldings. Scaffolding

The question is how to use these construction situation positively. The main issue is cathedral is one of the most important symbol in cologne and we ca see it almost everywhere in the city.

On Construction

The suggestion is to use scaffolding itself as a main structure of this museum. As well as structure, using reusable material for volume must be considered. Using them supported by scaffoldings.60 years later, they could be used at the other exhibition,or shops, whatever.

Extracting

Structure

Taking advantage of construction situation, of which people can see the details very closely, extract different parts of cathedral, and use them as an exhibition and each containers shows DOM's details.

Each containers is supported by scaffoldings. Therefore, the facade of cathedral will not be completely covered by museum's facade. In addition, it makes it very easy to change the flows depends on construction situation. 19

Scaffolding has also possibility to make contemporary art like with fabrics, this is an example of using curtains which are on the left-upper side with yellow colour. This museum has possibility to make new art with Dom,colour, light, fabric and so on. Each container makes a picture flame to show details of cathedral and makes a combination with light to focus on them

03 Architecture as a symbol Revival of lost gong sound Architecture as a symbol - makes community and new history. The site is designated as an important traditional buildings group preservation district because it's urban plan has remained since Edo period, about 400years. There are so many temples around this area and there were culture of gong sound from temples. Although, this culture is getting disappeared now. Thus, this project is focused on how to revival of culture by architecture. This is not just a design project, but also considered master plan depends on urban grid and its history. Each gong tower is translated its form from traditional shapes depends on which function each of them has and what context around the site has. The suggestion is making 3 new gong towers in temples which lost gong tower during the second war and making a new connection through them in these whole area.

History

Site Analysis

There were 2 important street, one is so called "Old-Noda street" and another one is "Old-Tsurugi street". There was also spacious place, like square, called "Rokutonohiromi". These three characteristic urban structure is still existing in this area.

Temples which are used to have a gong tower Most of temples are used to have a gong tower but they lost it because of WW2. The temples along the old noda street(B) are basically hidden behind houses.

1

A Old-Noda street Temples along the old-Noda street are basically facing their facade to the street. And in former time, this street is used as main road. Along this street, people can easily feel that this is traditional area.

B Old-Tsurugi street The density of temples is highest along the old-tsurugi street. Although many temples locate behind houses because of urban grid from Edo period. Because of that, people can not feel atmosphere as traditional area and temples seems to have no relationship with street.

C Rokutonomiromi In old time, Rokutonohiromi was used for escaping area at the time of fire emergency. It is also used as community area. Many allies are so narrow around this area but only here is wide.

Combining this history of town composition and gong sound's culture makes new space and community. Therefore, I decided Rokutonohiromi and around old Tsurugi street as a site of this project. 23

Through the analysis, I suggest new path which is connected by 3 towers. These paths are basically go through inside of temple area, and this strengthens the historical urban structure in this area. Each gong towers has function of informing the time as inherent function of it. The program of each towers is decided based on context and then ring time also follows these functions.

Tower for e ve nts According to the feature of Hiromi square, this gong tower should be for event, like some important time. First floor is inn, which tourist can have an experience of life of ZEN, and the second floor is cafe. In front of the building is opened to public. Combined with stairs, this building attract people into this public area. The design is considered how to integrate existing temple. There are mainly 3 aspect, which are tower(verticality), terrace(horizontal), stairs. Finally the gong tower plays a role like a gate by inserting stairs and invite people’s flow.

04 Disappeared Park Water and Danger Water and danger - how can an architecture coexist with it? In recent years, menace of natural disaster is getting bigger and bigger all over the world because of climate change. Especially in Japan, the power of typhoon is bigger and bigger every year, and the damage is enormous. It is obvious that we, human, and artificial things can not beat the power of nature. We should think about how to change the situation, but also we need to think how an architecture should behaviour with this situation, because climate change can not be changed in short term. In this project, we spirit the 8 strips along the Lake Biwa, and think about the relationship between nature, water, danger and architecture. The purpose is to seek the possibility of architecture, of what an architecture can do with nature.

Site Shiga district - Lake Biwa Lake Biwa is the biggest lake in Japan. In Shiga district, there is leisure place named 'Biwako Valley'. There are also some beaches. This strip(the area in red box) is located 10 min by foot from Shiga station. The usage is mostly houses and rice field. The atmosphere is quiet, and calm. The contrast with mountain and lake is characteristic one in this strip. These area is separated by elevated rail way(Red line on right pic)

Site Components

Shiga

Dry River The river, which flows in this strip, but has normally no water. When there is heavy rain, water appearers. Even though we rarely see water in the river bad, this river has a role of protecting from flood. According to danger map, the risk of flood around here is not so high.

Dry & Water

Water goes through undernearth of the river.

There are some references in Japan about dry & water. The left one is a sink bridge in a dry river which does not resist against floods. Right one is how to show water without it. Both method can be helpful on this project. 29

Making water visible Coexisting with change of water level Site

Masterplan

Infrastructure

Creek

Water level

The components of this area is dry river, jungle, railway, 2 main roads, delta, and lake.

The lake seems to be very close but actually not. Because of the jungle, it is not so easy to get lake shore, especially delta, which is the most beautiful part in this strip. This rong park can connect the town and lake shore.

The railway and 2 main road interpret the access between the 2 main roads. Thus, this park can be a infrastructure for local people and make a new access way between them and to the lake shore.

Water can be visible with shape. The shape make a harmony with existing creek, and then it also shows water flow by itself shape.

Only one architecture language is used in this design-continuous walk way. Then it is very easy to see how water level is changed. It is also expected that the whole park is under the water.

Along this continuous park, there are some place for rest, way out/ entrance, or recreation. These spot can make people's activity and also new access to the lake shore. At the observation tower, people can see both beautiful lake and mountain.

05 Self-Sufficient City Urban Public Space Competiton What is like the urban public space in 20XX ? It is obvious the lack of resources, foods, materials, and so on, and the global warming is getting worse every year. In these situation, we need to change how to make our life. In Edo era, in Japan, 420 years ago, there was cycle society. We also have a possibility to make it with using technologies like solar, wind, or biomass energy generation, or even our activities, like playing with a swing, or gym of fitness. The suggestion is public space along with energy supply in each community which is self sufficient and visible. The energy sources are made from human and nature activities. New public space in 20XX is made by these activity. In other words, the place which make the cycles visible has a function as a PUBLIC SPACE. This proposal mentions not only about energy supply, but also food waste, garbage, or agriculture, which have relationship with our life. This seeks not only the possibility of urban space, so to say, human, but also whole benefit for the earth and our future.

06 Triangular Pavilion Rethinking landscape from 3D Scan and sound recording The site is Rurikoin, kyoto. KIT and ETH 's landscape lab have worked together to analyse city and landscape by using technology, like 3D scan. The aim of this workshop is that we find new perspective of the Japanese garden through 3D scan and sound recording and also find new relationship between sounds and gardens,as a landscape. The first step of this project is that doing 3D scan and recording the sound in the garden and analyse them. The second step is that design a pavilion from the interpretation of the garden based on the analysis. Through the analysis, we found relationships between inside, outside, sounds, and so on. We also made movies to express the features of the garden by using 3Dscan data and recorded sounds. The final presentation of this design is made by 3D point crowd data according to scanned point crowd data of the garden.

Sound Recording

3D Scan

The purpose is to find some new perspective of the landscape from sounds. Thus, of course, we collected natural sound like a pond, breeze, and birds, but also we made sounds like walking on the pebble or corridor, blooming leaves, and closing / opening doors and so on. In addition, we collected not only whole sound around this are, but also very, subtle sounds like a sound of water dropping.

We did 3D scan in whole area in the temple, and after that we collected all date into one, and made 3D date with points. Through these processes, we found 3 approaches which shape flows to the topography. The first approach and second one are clearly recognized because we now use them as flows, but the third hasn’t been used anymore. Although, this one was used as an approach to the tea room in the old age. Therefore we propose a pavilion which makes that third approach visualized.

1

1. The fist approach, as an entrance, connects between outside and inside.

3 2. The second approach, connects 2 volumes

2 3. The third approach, connects 2 gardens

43

01 The Band | 02 DOM Complex | 03 Architecture as a symbol | 04 Disappered Park | 05 Self-Sufficient City 20XX | 06 Triangular Pavilion | 07 Me, more 44

To make the third approach visualized, we propose a small rest space so-called “KOSHIKAKEMACHIAI”, on that approach. KOSHIKAKEMACHIAI is used to be a place where a guest waits before he invites to the tea ceremony. Reflection is an important aspect in Ruriko-in. Therefore, we use materials which have effects of reflect of spaces. To clearly compare with traditional building, we do not use wood like traditional KOSHIKAKEMACHIAI, but use Aluminum.

07 Me,more What makes me I think what I like, what is important for me, or what I make in daily life influence to my architectural things. Actually, for me, I really care what I see, feel, or how I live, even though they doesn't seem to directly have a relation with architecture, because every aspects can give me/us clue for my/our works. I do not think we really need inherent talent for making marvellous works, but we can, or need to polish the scene. These things should not happen only when we think about architecture, but also in our daily, normal days. Here, you can see what makes me, not what I make. I really want to make myself sensitive to every moments and open myself to so many categories. Our wide interest should help us for any design even when the society is changed. - Find a small happiness in an ordinary day, but stay greedy for knowledge.

What I draw

Drawing is one of my hobby. I do not have the very style, and I like drawing oil painting, and illustrator both with colour or black and white. This is one of the ways to show what I feel or what I keep in my mind, and also it is a good practice to translate a object into a simple line and colour, which means, good practice for how to interpret things as something. 47

What I sketch

Architectural sketch or landscape's sketch sometimes help for you to find something you missed.

What I cook

I really like cooking. It is the easiest way to feel season, and also it is the closest changes with you in your ordinary life! Food makes yourself from inside of your body. I do not cook something special, but I try to arrange them as beautiful as possible to enjoy eating more, and feel inner joy from them. Foods, meals, or cuisine is always with culture. It is a clue to understand them. 49

What I feel

These are the pictures which I took when I was running. Jogging is also one of my hobbies. Every time I run, I can find a subtle change of nature, and it gives me a joy. In these moments, I think, we can polish our own sense of feelings. In addition, I feel we can not beat nature. But I think we do not have to do so. We just need to coexist with it, and protect it, and then I feel what we can do through design. How the mountain looks like if different every time depends on seasons, time, weather, and so on. You can find a flower is blooming which wasn't so a day before. What we feel or see can be changed depends on speed. You can sometimes find something you missed when you drive a car or bike. My motto is 'be sensitive and enjoy for changes'. Jogging is probably a way to keep it.
