PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the President of the Kansas Library Association I am pleased to announce the recipients of the KLA Presidential Awards. Awards will be presented at the KLA / MLA Joint Conference on Thursday, Oct. 1st from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Library Advocate: This award is presented in recognition of exemplary leadership or support for growth and development of the Kansas Library Association and/or a library or libraries in Kansas. The year’s recipient is Senator Pat Pettey representing Kansas City Kansas. As her nomination letter reads, “She is always inquiring about the needs of the library and wants to be kept abreast of what is going on. When there is a need, she is willing to do whatever she can to assist (libraries)…” New Professional: This award is given to a new professional that has made a positive impact on the quality of library service and/or the role of library personnel in Kansas. This year’s recipient is Lauren Hays from Mabee Library, MidAmerica Nazarene University. As her nomination states, “Her list of accomplishments and new initiatives is remarkable – and even mind-boggling”. Library Personnel: The Library Personnel award is given to an individual who has made notable contributions to the library profession, furthered significant development of libraries in Kansas, or performed exemplary service for an extended period of time. This year we are presenting the award to Rhonda Machlan from the State Library of Kansas. In her nomination form, Rhonda is described as “a bastion of knowledge, competence, and common sense.” It goes on to state that, “She consistently does her homework on new technologies and vendor upgrades, and advocates for the needs of all of the sizes and types of Kansas libraries she supports in her role as Resource Sharing Specialist (a title that doesn’t begin to describe her areas of expertise).” Meritorious Service: The individual receiving this award is given in recognition of exemplary and sustained service to the benefit of Kansas libraries and library users and/or the Kansas Library Association. This year the award recipient is Kathleen Rippel, recently retired from the Central Library Kansas System after 17 years of service with them. Kathy’s contribution to the Kansas Library community is described as “resource sharing and access with a strong customer service orientation to successfully get people what they want” along with working and leading from the trenches providing a “solid source of guidance and inspiration.”
2015 Best Small Public Library in Kansas It is my pleasure to announce that Hesston Public Library is the 2015 Best Small Public Library! Under Director Libby Albers’ leadership, the Library worked with the State Historian, Hesston Community Foundation, Hesston College, Hesston Record, Hesston Mennonite Church, and USD 460 to organize a week-long series of remembrance activities for the 25th anniversary of a tornado that swept through Hesston. The Library worked to create a Digital Special Collection of images, videos, and recorded accounts. They also marked the path the tornado took during the month of the anniversary of the tornado so participants could Walk the Path, as well as several other special remembrance programs. Join me in congratulating Libby and her staff on the excellent example they have set for us across the state. She and others from Hesston Public Library will be at the KLA/MLA Joint-Conference September 30-October 2 to accept the $500 reward and recognition. I hope you will join me there to celebrate with Hesston Public Library in person. Kim Gile Information Services Manager Johnson County Library 913-826-4600 Ext. 64410 www.jocolibrary.org

Programs to consider attending: Wednesday, September 30. 3:00 - 3:45pm Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People | 2504A
Unmotivated and unhappy staff leads to workplace troubles in the form of passive aggressive behavior, cynicism, poor productivity, strained relationships and an overall negative environment. When people feel valued and appreciated, they are motivated to become better and give their all to the tasks at hand, but a one size fits all approach to showing appreciation is rarely effective. In this presentation learn how effectively communicate appreciation and encouragement to those you work with. Gail Santy is a Certified Facilitator of Appreciation at Work™ and is excited to share this information with libraries. In the schedule this session is listed in the Leadership track, but I would claim it is for everyone. I presented this at a CKLS retreat and the positive comments were overwhelming. I am very passionate about building positive relationships between leaders and staff, and I look forward to sharing that passion with people who attend my session. If you join me, you will leave with easy, do-able ideas for building relationships and showing your co-workers that you value them in your organization. Hope to see you there! Gail Santy, Presenter

Our goal is to give you a lot of ideas that you can take home and implement in your library next week. We hope you will join us as we talk about our Super Hero success in partnering with others and enlarging the library boundaries to include other community resources. Janet Reynolds Library District #2 of Linn County--La Cygne, KS Library and County Extension Partnership: "Super Heroes" Dreams Enlarge Library Boundaries | 2503B Major Coconut & The Powerful Cherry present Libraries without Boundaries . . . About a year ago, I (Janet) met Kathy Goul from the Extension Office. She was transitioning from part time to full time and one of her first jobs was to work with me doing a summer camp program. After talking for about an hour, we discovered that we had a lot of the same goals and dreams for helping children and helping communities. Over the last twelve months, our partnership between the Library and K-State Extension has made things happen that seem like Super Heroes Dreams coming true. With this Summer Reading theme, we took the super hero challenge and decided to work on making those dreams reality for our community. We saw a need for summer food program, we invited the community to help, and we've formed partnerships with churches and civic groups and individuals to meet those needs. By working first with the children and meeting their needs, we hope to transition into more programming to help the parents in the future. Our dreams haven't stopped, the library is a natural avenue for extension to reach people because the library is the community center. -Programming & Outreach Track
