THE HANGING FLOWER GATE (垂花门)

Craft in Traditional Asian Architecture Studying traditional Chinese wood craft in 1980s by reconstructing Chui Hua Men at Summer Palace in Beijing, China.

Media: Hand-drawing, AutoCAD, SketchUp, physical model The project research on construction and conservation methods of East Asian timber buildings, by producing drawings and practicing woodworking, highlighting details of timber qualities. This project is driven as learning by doing method. Research was done on proportion system grade (Yingzao Fashi), Siheyuan style joinery construction and crafting tools. Prior construction on rescale of the original gate in pine timber, 3D model and balsa wood model was tested. No glue or fixing was used in any construction stage of physical model.
