PARALLEL SITE: 17-18 Soi Chulalongkorn 36 Bangkok, Thailand Supervisor: Nick Bourns

Parallel is a project that tackles the current conflict between gentrification and rapid growth of malls and existing shophouse typologies in Bangkok, Thailand. These two contested views between commercial growth and development and the existing shophouses ,seen as the cause of social issues in inequality and urban planning. However, demolition of existing shophouses causes the city to lose its identity, whereby Bangkok is known for its street life and activation through these shophouse laneways. The project questions and explores these two typologies to work in parallel, benefiting the city in a wider context and accentuating its sense of identity. The project focuses on formulating and speculating a new typology through the hybridization of the mall and shophouse for the future site, with spontaneous flexibility for heterogenous activities. The extraction of these typological strategies is then used to formulate the project, creating a mixed-use project which brings street life and interaction rather than the ground plane. Moreover, Verticality allows for users to experience pieces of the city’s mixed programs as a journey of wayfinding.

LEARNING FRONTIER 3 SITE: 81 Bouverie St Carlton Melbourne VIC 3053 TUTORS: PATRICK MACASAET

A learning campus that journeys through a discovery of monuments, forming a narrative story that bounds with RMIT distinctive architectural language. Establishing a segregation between the school and the civic realm as a series of topological differences for the facilitation of different age groups and respecting the boundaries of the community The campus prioritizes inclusiveness with the learning and civic environment with spaces that interfere with one another; creating different conditional learning spaces according to the functionality it intersects , forming common spaces that cater towards the needs of flexibility and porosity in the learning environment

NEW LEARNING CONDITIONS

COLLISION SOCIAL THE COLLISION OF PROGRAMMTIC SPACES THAT CREATES A CONDITIONAL AREA THAT SHARES AND FACILITATES LEARNING ENGAGEMENT, FACULTIES AND THE COMMUNAL INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL.

OPENNESS MINIMAL ENCLOSED AREAS

DUALITY CIVIC+LEARNING THE INFORMAL AND FORMAL SPACES SHARE A NEGATIVE FUNCTIONALITY THAT SERVES AS LEARNING SPACES, VARIED ENGAGING SPACES AGAINST THE SALINITY OF MODULATION AND ASSOCIATION WITHIN THE SCHOOL.

DISCONNECTION DISTINCTION BETWEEN SOCIAL AND CIVIC THE CIVIC AND SCHOOL REALM BECOMES DISCONNECTED TO SUPPORT THE FUNCTIONALITIES OF THE ASSOCIATED FUNCTIONAL REALM; CREATING A DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE LEARNING AND CIVIC ENVIRONMENT.

TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING SPACES BECOMING OPEN AREA

HIERARCHY SEPERATION OF INFORMAL AND FORMAL DIFFERENT LEARNING AGES

DELIBERATE VOIDAL AREAS BECOMES OPEN TOWARDS THE PLATFORM OF LEARNING SPACES THAT MERGES WITH OTHER FACILITIES; MINIMISING THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITIES OF THE SCHOOL.

THE TRANSITION OF LEARNING SPACES FROM ENCLOSED TO OPEN AREAS; CREATING A COMMUNAL AREA OF INCLUSIVENESS WITHIN THE SCHOOL CONTEXT AND MAKING THE INFORMAL POROUS TOWARDS THE CIVIC REALM.

THE TOPOLOGICAL LEVELS OF THE SCHOOL PRIORITISES DIFFERENT LEARNING AGE GROUPS, FORMAL AND INFORMAL LEARNING SPACES AND THE CIVIC SEPERATION FROM THE SCHOOL WHICH RESPECTS THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY.

ASSOCIATION DISTINCT MONUMENTAL LANDMARKS SPECIFIC MODULARITIES OF CANTILEVERS OR “BUILDINGS” BECOMES DEAD SPACE, SERVING AS A MEANS OF IDENTITY WITH THE SCHOOL’S TRADEMARK CODING AND NAVIGATION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL, DIFFERENTIATING FUNCTIONAL SPACES.

House Challenge 2019 Temporary Dwellings in the Desert

Honorable mentioned

BIO A By observing the organisms surviving the harsh conditions, their self-sustaining systems can tackle the major problems for humans to temporarily live in the desert. Extreme weather, droughts and windy conditions are examined and improved by bio-mimicking the cacti’s outer ridges, the air ventilation from the termites’ mound and the bumps from the desert beetles’ wings. BIOTAT is proposing the idea of unifying the bio-mimicry elements into one system forming the minimized design with maximum efficiency. The cacti structure deals with the sun exposure by maximizing its internal volume while minimizing the ridges on the external skin. This results in three tapered masses connected in a row, forming a seamless space with a panoramic view inside and providing shade for one another. Inspired by the ventilation system of the termites’ mound, the house is elevated to have porous walls underneath. As air flows through the porous walls and hitting the water tank, moisture around the tank cools the air, which is delivered into the house via the air vents, while pushing the hot air to the upper channels, the interior is cooled down. Plumbing and water collection comes from the beetles’ fog harvesting methods. Utilizing the drastic nightly temperature drop, the cold and dry corrugated walls on the central mass condenses the moisture from the surrounding air. This forms droplets which run down a gutter into the water collection tank. These bio-mimicked systems are bounded by a central core, which contains electricity and plumbing equipment. Considering that the house is for temporary use, the materials are locally sourced and the furniture is embedded within the structure. Mother Nature has proven the way of sustainability by not requiring solutions but to emulate the nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. BIOTAT unities the nature within the living, conveying a harmonious experience between its exquisite surroundings and the optimized temporary dwelling.

COMMUNITY

A unit itself has its semi-private area created by the corners of the mass, which provides the shaded spots and stronger community character. A full community is made as the enclosed space acquired by the four house units. The residents can enter the house from the entire outdoors as well as from inside the community area which gives them a complete circulation.
