Urban Palazzo Comprehensive Design Studio New York, NY Situated in at the south-eastern corner of Bryant Park, the project is a redevelopment of the Mid-Manhattan Library. We approached this project with a criticism on the scale-less and detail-less modern minimalist designs of contemporary office towers that gives no regard to human scale. Looking at the Austrian Cultural Forum by Raimund Abraham as a precedent, we responded to the criticism through giving spaces and surfaces tangible details that gives a monumental design a sense of human scale. PIG CITY
Pig City Syracuse, NY Located in the heart of Syracuse, the goal of the project intends to close the gap between production and consumerism within the food realm. The program reflects the food production process with a pig farm, a slaughter house, a restaurant, a market and an educational center, which are all available to the public. As a result of trying to reduce the graphic images of the slaughter house, the design strategy then becomes a chance to highlight some of the sensory aspect of the other programs. As the images and sounds within a slaughter house can become overwhelming the design turns the process into an art form where a public wall frames each step. Each frame is filtered in order to artistically capture specific moments of the process of killing, bleeding, gutting and a butchering of the pig. This creates a space-time relationship between the viewer in the space and the process which happens over time. YUTAKA SHO STUDIO

Heavy Water Brooklyn, NY This live-work artist facility intends to rehabilitate an abandoned powerhouse next to the Gwanus Canal. The building is rotated true north and places the spaces that need the most natural day light towards the exterior. The program consists of three interlocking components: live-work space, fabrication facility, and studio spaces which penetrate the existing powerhouse. The main building that slides out of the existing building consists of a bathhouse that is carved into the ground, forming the atrium and contrasting itself with the canal in section. As the center of the building the public bathhouse challenges the notion of public and private spaces. The ground plane is terraced in order to interact with the tidal activity of the Gwanus Canal. IN PROXIMITY
In Proximity Flushing, Queens, NY Located in Queens Borough the project attempts to explore the cultural diversity within the Flushing neighborhood. The site is located at the end of Main Street, a significant distance from the main area of Flushing. The building was set with multi-cultural program in order to reflect the neighborhood. The design approach was to divide the site in half with a long indoor promenade, placing a food center and a sports facility in each half. These two programs are then subdivided into more specific spaces which supplement the larger program. BRIAN ZHANG LI STUDIO

Urban Housing Florence, Italy The urban density of the historical city and its architecture forces the local and tourist populations to constantly be in proximity within Florence’s city center. This 3 weeks project intends to widen the distance between the two populations. As a site strategy, all the locals within the city’s center were to move out and occupy the waterfront along the Arno River. Not only will the strategy provide the view and breeze, but it is a chance to revive the waterfront. All existing buildings are to be torn down only to leave the historical architecture: the Uffizi, Basilica di Santa Croce and Santa Trinita. Arised from looking at the plan of the Uffizi, the design is to create units of “U” shaped housings that are connected and weaves in and out along the Arno. These “U” shaped housings create shaded courtyards that in turn create spaces for the local residences distanced from the tourist populated center. The main feature of these weaving of housing is that it engages and morphs into the Uffizi, Basilica di Santa Croce, and Santa Trinita, relating these local housings back to its historical precedents.
RICHARD ROSA STUDIO
Villa Rossa Renovation Florence, Italy Working with the existing Syracuse University’s main Florentine building, Villa Rossa, the project intends to make Syracuse University more engaged with its community through making the site more publicly accessible. The site includes an existing outdoor garden that nestles in between Villa Rossa and the library. Two public programs that are to be introduced are an archive and an auditorium. The site strategy for this project is to redesign the outdoor garden and keep the existing buildings. As a design strategy, series of walls are designed to create the archive space which also acts as an entrance into the underground auditorium. Another entrance is through Villa Rossa’s unused garage way which leads into an outdoor theatre space that is terraced to create seating. The project focuses on the architectural composition through both plans and sections. RICHARD ROSA STUDIO
SKILLS
Sketches
This series of sketches was done during a semester abroad in Florence, Italy. (left page, left image on right page) and travels in Japan (previous page, right image on right page). The analytic drawings focus on proportions, space, and the relationship between facade, section, and plan.
Fabrication
The model attempts to show the circulation within the different floors of a design by a series of shifting, rotating, and interlocking plates. The front sides of these plates consist of orthogonal and circular grooves that interlock with a key at the back side of the plate that sits on top. The shape of the keys and the direction of the groove force the plates to slide and rotate in a specific way which then translates to how one might circulate through the design. Media: Plywood, cherry wood, walnut wood, wooden dowels, wood glue, rope Tools: Bandsaw, scroll saw, dril press
The model plays with interaction of solids and voids and the pushing and pulling of spaces. The transparent box is constructed using plexi which is design to have only one specific entry and exit point. The wooden L shaped block acts as the solid that moves through the void by the act of tilting the box around. The movement of the solid then creates the pushing and pulling effect within the model. Media: 1/8 Plexiglass, cherry wood, weld-on Tools: Bandsaw, sander
The wooden models are done with the restriction of using glue therefore all the pieces are done using tongue and groove joints. The intention of this project is to create a display device that displays three objects. Through the series of details and moves, the display device becomes a piece that frames and highlights the luminosity effect of each object. Media: Birch Plywood (right), Pine Plywood (left), acrylic Tools: Bandsaw, table saw, sander
