�理、���場開���都是��而來的�題。我們����當代��的���式,�必須克服�科技� �來的挑戰,是一個����陌生的�題。

Director’s words
Film is a great invention of humanity in the 20th century. From the L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat of the Lumier brothers to the “Ready Player One” by Steven Spielberg, film breaks through the space quadrant, flips the picture, then even pushes beyond people’s cognition of reality and virtuality. Virtual Reality is the medium that leads us to the future of narrative. “Short film is the best experiment for new technology.” In 2017, Kaohsiung Film Archive launched the “Kaohsiung VR FILM LAB” project and produced five cinematic VR films. In addition, the first VR Program was created at the Kaohsiung Film Festival to stimulate the attention of Taiwanese industry to VR films. In 2018, “Kaohsiung VR FILM LAB” cooperated with domestic famous creative directors Ya-Che YANG, WeiHao CHENG, Singing CHEN and Tsung-Han TSAI. Moreover, we tried international cooperation and opened up the international market —— “Mechanical Souls”, a co-production by talents from both Taiwan and France was born. Besides VR content, the first experimental VR theater in Taiwan: VR FILM LAB, is established with the intention to provide a proper environment for audience to experience VR, as well the first step for VR to go into commercial operation. From fundraising, copyright negotiation, technique details, venue design, market research and on-site operation management are all issues to be overcome at each stage. This year’s KFF VR events are warmed up with four VR leading lectures, and the “KFF International Short Film Competition VR Section” and “VR PANORAMA” opened the international exchange channel through the platform of the Kaohsiung Film Festival. The “International VR Forum” invites important VR industry experts at home and abroad to gather together and discuss the topic of the in-depth VR film industry. At the same time, talent cultivation is the cornerstone of industrial development. Through “VR FILM LAB Talent Workshop”, local young creators will be mentored by industry experts and to develop their unique stories. VR is indeed a new technology. However, in the process of advancing, it led us back to the moment when cinema and human first met. VR FILM LAB is an integrated and flipped industrial development program that reminds us of “familiar with old knowledge and learning new things, not forgetting the original intention”. And all of this is just the beginning.

When world-class film festivals were established and attached importance to VR Screenings, Kaohsiung Film Festival VR Screenings and the "Kaohsiung VR FILM LAB" project entered its second year. Although the international VR seems to be on the rise, what exactly is the future of VR ? The two-day International VR Forum will cut from two aspects of creation and industry, first of all, you can hear the behind-the-scene stories of award-winning domestic directors’ first VR work. At the same time, VR Programmer of Venice International Film Festival, European and Asian VR professional pioneers are invited to share their specialty. The forum includes fundraising, production, distribution, film and theater industry analysis, in-depth understanding of the world's VR production status, market observation and future prospects .

A pioneer of immersive and interactive storytelling, specialising in audiovisual innovation. Liz Rosenthal specialises in boosting the digital potential of creators, institutions and media business. She is the Founder & CEO of Power the Pixel and Programmer of immersive content for Venice International Film Festival’s Venice VR, the official competition section and Venice Production Bridge Finance Market. Throughout her career, Liz has helped international media businesses and creatives to innovate and adapt to changing audiences. After working as Head of Editorial for the web and video portals of cultural channels (ABSat Group), Michael Swierczynski then took over the running of the New Media arm of the INA (French National Institute of Audiovisual) where he was responsible for the organization’s digital transformation and was one of the drivers of the www.ina.fr website. In 2013, he became Head of Digital Development at the Forum des images, which was looking to initiate its digital transformation and organize content distribution. In 2016 he launch the first Festival dedicated to Virtual reality “Paris Virtual” who become NewImages following the association of other digital events and the expansion of its offer. 21

After a Master II Communication and Media in Assas and a Master II PLA at the Sorbonne, he created his production company FATCAT FILMS in 2005. In November 2013, FATCAT FILMS incorporates the audiovisual group PREMIERE HEURE and became its digital label. In January 2014 he creates a second production company specializing in the production of content for virtual reality, OKIO STUDIO, by partnering with Pierre Zandrowicz and Lorenzo Benedetti . This company have created short experience where screened at Tribeca, Cannes and Venice Film Festival amongst others. In October 2017 he sold OKIO STUDIO to a commercial group and team up with new producers to create a new immersive production company ATLAS V, in Paris, Lyon, New York and Los Angeles.

After 15 years in film and television production and management, Apu switches his focus on 8K stereoscopic VR entertainment industry and its future. Not only in movies, he also extends stereoscopic VR to culture, entertainment, medicine and education, providing industrial total solutions respectively. He founded Funique VR in 2015 and makes it an integrated VR production house. In 2018, at World VR Forum Annual Summit in Switzerland Apu and Funique VR charmed Europe with its 8k stereoscopic VR and 8K VR theater system.

An outstanding visual artist, Chuan has demonstrated his talents from a young age. His graduation work- Cubic Tragedy won the SIGGRAPH 2005 People’s Choice - Electronic Theater. Immediately after, he joined the renown production studio, Glassy Jelly, and won quite a few international awards with the team. In 2015, he joined Funique VR and has developed the ant-man camera, [Z1] macro camera, and the [X] automatic computing system.

CHEN conveys her long-term social observation through documentaries and feature dramas. Her approach of magical realism highlights the absurdity in reality, and points out the structural problem in the society. In her well constructed fast-paced works, she is capable of delivering subtle emotion and in-depth dynamics in characters. Throughout time, her works are screened and nominated in Berlin Film Festival, Golden Horse Awards, Busan International Film Festival, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Taipei Film Festival, Kaohsiung Film Festival, and Taiwan International Documentary Festival. Aside from being on set, she also produces scores for theater plays and films. Chen’s ability thus makes her work rich in rhythm and music.

His second feature, Who Killed Cock Robin, received five Golden Horse Award nominations.

Tsung-Han’s first feature film screenplay Winds of September (2009) won the Best Screenplay Awards at the Golden Horse Awards, Taipei Film Festival, and Chinese Film Media Awards. It was also nominated as the Best Screenplay at the Asian Film Awards. He was a director alumnus at the Golden Horse Film Academy helmed by the esteemed auteur HOU Hsiao-hsien. His directorial shorts, My Grandma and Love After Time nominated Golden Horse Awards.

Po-Hsun HE has 9 years of filmmaking expreince. His started film producer career from 2014, and has participated in “The Bride”, “Didi’s Dream”, “High Flash” and “A Love of Boluomi”. Besides feature films, his works in TV commercials as well and has worked with international crew from Hong Kong, South Korea and China.

Graduated from french Gobelins school, He gets in Virtual Reality and 360° movies in 2013 for immersive production researches. The next year, he joins DVgroup as advisory producer, and with his associate, Thomas VILLEPOUX, he initiates the original content production department to finance and support creation in VR.
In 2016, he creates Digital Rise, a story lab dedicated to narrative projects in virtual reality and new immersive forms. He shares his knowledge in the first guideline book about VR production and creative process. Through his various collaborations, he has worked on dozens of VR projects, including awardwinning documentary The Real Thing, and the immersive VR theatre Alice, the virtual reality play, produced by DVgroup.

He held various positions in the film sector, successively as Film Programmer at the Paris International Film Festival, Audiovisual Attaché at the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, and Project Manager (International Affairs) at France’s national film school, La Fémis.

After 7 years working in traditional cinema, Camille co-founds the first VR cinema in France. As a immersive content producer, Kim produced cinematic VR “EYES IN THE RED WIND” which has invited by Sitges IFF and Sundance New Frontier Section and others. He founded GRABIT, the new media content creating company, which produces VR contents with new generation creators. TRACK (Interactive VR experience that travels through memories of the first love) and NINE (Cinematic room escaping project based on K-drama) is under production. Kim also has been working as programmer of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) for 3 years. To set a creative infrastructure of immersive media, Kim teaches at Korea National University of Arts (K’arts).

As VR has become a new way of storytelling, it has great potential of changing the mainstream of the film industry. With the goal of education and promoting immersive storytelling, Kaohsiung Film Archive started the first edition of “2018 Kaohsiung VR FILM LAB Talent Workshop” with both governmental and industrial support. 30 talented university students are gathered as participants of the workshop. During the 6 days, participants will follow the steps of industrial experts, be part of “International VR Forum”, “VR Lectures” to improve their storytelling ideas and technique, then presents their final proposal at the project presentation.

Virtual Reality not only has become an uprising focus in film and digital art industry around the world but has set its place as a new star in world’s first-class film festivals. Aiming to advocate cinematic VR creation in Taiwan, Kaohsiung Film Archive started KAOHSIUNG VR FILM LAB in 2017, as the pioneering VR funding project from content developing to screening. With the vision of emboldening more local filmmakers to the world of cinematic VR, we’ve collaborated with five outstanding Taiwan-based directors and produced five amazing VR titles. With the encouraging feedback from audience and international film festivals to our 2017 edition, this year we invited four well-known Taiwanese directors to create their first cinematic VR films with their extraordinary imagination. Moreover, KAOHSIUNG VR FILM LAB awarded a co-produced title Mechanical Souls by award winning French studio DVgroup, Digital Rise and Serendipity Films from Taiwan. Five cinematic VR films will be proudly premiered during KFF in our brand-new experimental VR theater — VR FILM LAB.

This film is inspired by the murals depicting heaven and hell in Taiwanese temples. This film introduces a Taiwanese funeral to the audience from a POV angle. Besides enjoying the ultimate luxurious afterlife service from an extreme closeup, the audience also get a glimpse of heaven, hell and reincarnation in Taiwanese traditional religions. By going beyond the common grotesque concept of death, we hope you’ll find your peace of mind after the journey.

VR? Isn’t it an otaku gadget? I came around a new understanding of VR with the KFF invitation. Many developed countries are now experimenting the potentiality of VR, applying it to not only video games, but in a larger scale of interior design, library e-guide, and feature films. The results are mindblowing. I have seen a touching VR film Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness which presents how visual-impaired “see” the world. Within just ten minutes, my eyes were teary. VR is not just about groundbreaking visual effects and entertaining audios. It also touches a deeper tenderness inside the hearts.

Singing CHEN. She conveys her long-term social observation through documentaries and feature films. Her approach of magical realism highlights the absurdity in reality, and points out the structural problem in the society. In her well constructed fast-paced works, she is capable of delivering subtle emotion and in-depth dynamics in characters. Throughout time, her works are screened and nominated in Berlin Film Festival, Golden Horse Awards and more. Aside from being on set, she also produces scores for theater plays and films. This is my first VR video. Within the research and brainstorming process, I kept wondering questions like “What has VR brought us? How has the human senses been explored and changed? What is reality?” and “How much of the human civilization traces recorded through sound, images, languages, characters, videos, and virtual media get to travel through time and space, and to be presented to us (or to the future.)” By thinking deeper into these questions, I want to unify “form/media” and “core content.” Thus, this film is set upon a futuristic world where memories and consciousness can be uploaded. It captures the ineffable emotions in limbo, before death through Shou-Yi Chou’s choreography. Also, it is to discuss what’s worth storing. Will VR be happening inside our brain in the future? To go a step further, to see this dance from a meta perspective. Can this VR film transpass time? Or will everything end up as dust.

Gin, a little girl wakes up in an abandoned temple which is filled with wretched divine statues. Out of the blue, a dark shadow slides into one of the statues, and the holy goddess, Mazu, starts speaking from above. Following the blockbusters “The Tag-Along 1&2”, Golden Horse Award wining director Wei-Hao CHENG creates a whole new piece in virtual reality. This time, the mysterious creatures will go beyond the screen, whispering, fleeting and digging into the horror secret of Gin with you.

As my first try with VR as a story telling media, I designed this 3D abandoned temple as the main set. Different from the storeotype to temples, this one is forgotten, haunted, creepy, and full of wrecked, abandoned divine statues, that were once worshiped. No matter whether you are the divine, the living or the dead. Regardless of how you got here, tonight, we gather together, because we are the abandoned. The main heroine is a little girl. We see this world from her perspective, meet the divines, and spend a cute magical night!

Yuki, a live streamer, comes across an unwanted guest when interacting with her audience. After an online party, she is destroyed by malice. The Golden Horse Award nominated creator Tsung-Han TSAI dedicate himself as writer and director of “Live Stream from YUKI <3”, his very first virtual reality experience. Through VR, the boundary between virtual world on internet and reality is no longer concrete. Annoying netizens, glamorous live streamer and audience behind the screen, will be able to know which is real and which is fallacious?

Tsung-Han TSAI. A screenwriter and a director, Tsung-Han has a BA in Economics from the National Taiwan University and a MFA in Film Production from the Taipei National University of the Arts. Tsung-Han’s first feature film screenplay Winds of September (2009) won the Best Screenplay Awards at the Golden Horse Awards, Taipei Film Festival, and Chinese Film Media Awards. It was also nominated as the Best Screenplay at the Asian Film Awards. He was a director alumnus at the Golden Horse Film Academy helmed by the esteemed auteur HOU Hsiao-hsien. Many years ago, I heard from a friend that someone had fabricated a complete profile online and managed to keep up the façade for years. I remember I was thinking, this is ridiculous, what a lonely life? After I started posting and sharing on the social media, another realization suddenly dawned on me. So this is how it felt, ‘the yearning to be seen and heard by the world.’ When I first stepped into the realm of virtual reality, I found it very virtual and not real at all. Yet, the idea of virtualization is just as real as instinct. How else would we mortals live? If not to virtualize our own realities.

The direction will be mostly centered on the actors’ rhythm and acting. The editing will be light and the rhythm will based on the characters interactions and the way they occupy the space. Intonations and attitude will play a major role in the characters evolution. At the beginning, Zhen-Zhen is shy and quiet but she evolves to become a confident and independent woman. The same will happen with Ah-Hui – whilst developing her consciousness, she will learn the subtleties of communication. The evolution of both characters will happen concomitantly, each unconsciously encouraging the other in her evolution. I want to use this opportunity to take part in the creation of a new narrative language. We want the viewer’s attention to be focused on the action and the characters rather than on the 360° technique. To this effect, the use of specialized audio will have to be as natural as possible. We want the experience to be light, entertaining and easily accessible. VR is still a fairly new media. This field has hardly been explored so it gives us a lot of freedom to explore proven the mess, not only from a new perspective but also via a new form of expression. Interactive narration as we imagine it is a fascinating playing field allowing us to develop each character in detail. We will create complex characters – but as human as possible – on which the viewer will be able to linger.

After working as Head of Editorial for the web and video portals of cultural channels (ABSat Group), Michael Swierczynski then took over the running of the New Media arm of the INA (French National Institute of Audiovisual) where he was responsible for the organization’s digital transformation and was one of the drivers of the www.ina.fr website. In 2013, he became Head of Digital Development at the Forum des images, which was looking to initiate its digital transformation and organize content distribution. In 2016 he launch the first Festival dedicated to Virtual reality “Paris Virtual” who become NewImages following the association of other digital events and the expansion of its offer.

Dinner Party is a 3D virtual reality experience based on the true story of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who in 1961 reported the first nationally known UFO abduction. It's the pilot episode for The Incident, an anthology series that takes viewers on an immersive and intimate journey through true-life supernatural events. When the Hills were not able to remember and reconcile the details of an inexplicable event, they sought hypnosis. At a dinner party they played their recorded hypnoses to their friends, where viewers experience the separate and radically different accounts of the Hills' abduction.

A boat on a lake, a certain part of Asia. A group of friends and family members gather together to perform a “soul scooping” ritual to pacify the soul of a drowned man. In this ritual, a shaman in trance channels the dead so that the deceased can say goodbye to the beloved for the last time. Interactive Zone
The Sole 8K Stereoscopic VR Theater in Taiwan VR transcends our imagination of “watching” and makes our sensory experience closer to the future. Therefore, the design of the theater space is dominated by silver-gray tones and simple lines. The theater is equipped with multiple egg chairs, which makes audience feel like they are in a space capsule. In order to provide the best and most comfortable VR viewing experience for the audience, films will be played in stereoscopic 8K quality. In VR FILM LAB, audiences will be able to enjoy latest digital technology and the most powerful immersive experience.
360 Cinema & Interactive Zone Depending on the way that the VR works are shown, the viewing space is divided into two areas: “360 Cinema" and "Interactive Zone.” There are 30 arc-shaped egg chairs in the 360 Cinema, which can be rotated 360 degrees allowing users to enjoy VR films from different viewing angles. The “Interactive Zone” provides a space for interactive and stand-up VR experiences. In certain conditions, users are able to become an initiative participant instead of a passive viewer.
A Brand-new Way of Viewing and Thinking When the story is no longer described in a traditional way, we can have a new perspective on viewing and the possibility of interpreting the story! The world is changing every minute.
