One of the key artistic events of this spring has undoubtedly been Robert Wilson’s exceptional exhibition. It includes 56 video portraits that blend photography, cinema, literature and sound, making a strong comment about the history of portraiture. She was born and grew up in Mayfair, and graduated from the Francis Holland Girls' School, and studied fashion design at the American Intercontinental University on a scholarship and styling at the renowned Istituto Marangoni. In February 2011 she set up her own firm, Marianna G, and introduced herself to the fashion crowd as a fashion designer, launching her own swimwear range. Many of her designs 'borrow' their name and inspiration from Greek islands and their landscapes, colours, materials, pottery and legends, and can already be seen in the double spreads of Vogue of Harper's Bazaar, right next to glowing words of praise. A surprise? Well yes! One can certainly expect a lot more in the future from the 23-year old Marianna Goulandri with her sparkling blue eyes and mind for business...

Πάντα μου άρεσε να ντύνομαι όμορφα. Μικρότερη, στο σχολείο θηλέων όπου πήγαινα, στήναμε τα δικά μας mini fashion shows και παίζαμε, βάζοντας «τα καλά μας». Νομίζω, όμως, πως η μεγαλύτερη αποκάλυψη για μένα ήταν οι στιγμές που παρακολουθούσα τη μητέρα μου να ντύνεται για κάποιο επίσημο δείπνο - ήταν τόσο λαμπερή! Τότε κατάλαβα πως στο μέλλον θα έκανα κάτι που θα είχε σχέση με τη μόδα.

I always loved getting dressed up and being young - going to an all girls school we always had mini fashion shows and always played ‘dress up’. But I think the biggest revelation for me was when I was watching my mother getting ready for dinner and looking so glamorous! At that point I knew I wanted to do something fashion related.

The swimwear market is a very established one and there is a lot of competition so I knew it wasn’t going to be easy going into it. I have always had a connection to the beach and sea and after spending every summer in Greece and being around all types of women and analyzing their swimwear I felt it was something I wanted to create.

Why did you decide to bother with swimwear - is it perhaps an attempt to enter the fashion industry by putting your signature

Are you thinking later to expand to other fields and present your own collection? Yes of course. I want to turn Marianna G into a lifestyle brand so it becomes a place where you not only buy your swimsuit but also a bag, sunglasses, makeup etc. What was the feedback after the presentation of the series Marianna G Swimwear to British fashion editors? Which review are you particularly proud of? The feedback was extremely positive. We held a press day and all the major editors attended from not only Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire but also Time Luxx and The Financial Times. I think all of the reviews meant the same to me and they are all such influencial and established magazines and newspapers. Their feedback definitely gave me a sense of confidence and pride What characteristics make up the line Marianna G in your swimsuit? Materials, style, simplicity, variety, diversity? Greekness?

Ό,τι πρόβλημα και αν έχω, ξέρω πως θα είναι εκεί για μένα. Οι άλλες γυναίκες της οικογένειας εμπιστεύονται τη γνώμη σας στα θέματα μόδας ή καθεμία έχει το δικό της προσωπικό στυλ και δεν της αρέσει να πειραματίζεται; Όλες ακούμε η μία την άλλη και σεβόμαστε την γνώμη η μία της άλλης. Which is your favorite piece in your collection? My favorite would have to be Mykonos. I find this piece the most multi use piece! I can wear it in the day with a pair of shorts at the beach but I can also wear it with a skirt and some heels and it becomes a great evening top. The fact that you come from two major business families make things easier or more difficult? Do you feel the “weight” of your name, and do you feel that it is forbidden a "slip up" My parents have always been very suportive of my choices. They guide me and give me great advice but they have let me find my own way in my buisness - which of course will include making mistakes but learning which is the right path for me. How is the grandmother Marianna Vardinogianni? And what advice you follow your ears? My grandmother is Superwoman. Not only has she dedicated her life to helping her country and is a devoted humanitarian around the world she is also so involved with her family. Whatever problem I have I know she is there for me.

Στο δέσιμο που έχω με την οικογένειά μου - εγώ και η μητέρα μου είμαστε στ' αλήθεια «αυτοκόλλητες»! Νομίζω πως το ίδιο ισχύει για τους περισσότερους Έλληνες γονείς και τα παιδιά τους. Επίσης είμαι υποχόνδρια και προληπτική - δεν κάθομαι ποτέ σε τραπέζι 13 ατόμων. Αυτό είναι πολύ «ελληνικό», δεν είναι;

Τι πιστεύουν οι Άγγλοι φίλοι σας για τους Έλληνες και την ελληνική κρίση; Τι σας ρωτούν; Τι τους απαντάτε; Όλοι οι Άγγλοι φίλοι μου αγαπούν πολύ την Ελλάδα. Όποιος την επισκέπτεται φεύγοντας παίρνει μαζί του την εικόνα μιας χώρας πανέμορφης, με σπουδαία κουλτούρα και φιλόξενους ανθρώπους. Αυτό που κυρίως τους απασχολεί είναι ποιο θα είναι το μέλλον της χώρας μας, αν θα μπορέσει η χώρα κάποτε να γίνει οικονομικά αυτοδύναμη. Προσωπικά είμαι αισιόδοξη. Πιστεύω πως η Ελλάδα θα τα βγάλει πέρα στις δυσκολίες και θα συνεχίσει να είναι αυτός ο υπέροχος τόπος που αγαπά όλος ο κόσμος. Και φαγητό, πολύ φαγητό, παντού γύρω μας. Μερικές φορές- αν κρίνω από το φαγητό στο τραπέζι μας - είναι λες και κάποιος προσπαθεί να ταΐσει ένα μικρό χωριό… Tι σας λείπει περισσότερο όταν είστε μακριά από την Ελλάδα; Πόσο συχνά την επισκέπτεσθε;

Την επισκέπτομαι συνέχεια - περισσότερο όμως μένω τα καλοκαίρια. Μου λείπουν τα πάντα από την Ελλάδα, οι φίλοι μου, η οικογένειά μου, το καλό φαγητό. Χαίρομαι όμως που φεύγω, γιατί κάθε φορά που επιστρέφω τα εκτιμώ ακόμα περισσότερο. Πείτε μου δυο λόγια για το Astir Palace. Μια ωραία καλοκαιρινή ανάμνηση. Ένα περιστατικό… Έχω τόσο πολλές αναμνήσεις από το Astir Palace - άλλωστε ένα μέρος της παιδικής ηλικίας το έχω περάσει εδώ, σ’ αυτούς τους χώρους. Ίσως η πιο αγαπημένη μου ανάμνηση, είναι όταν ήμουν μικρούλα και οι γονείς μου, με έφερναν στον «Αστέρα», για να περάσουμε μαζί λίγες ώρες ξεκούρασης. Μετά εγώ περνούσα όλη την ημέρα τρέχοντας πάνω κάτω και πλατσουρίζοντας στην πισίνα, και εκείνοι με κυνηγούσαν…

Οι γονείς μου στήριζουν πάντα τις επιλογές μου. Με καθοδηγούν, μου δίνουν σπουδαίες συμβουλές, αλλά με αφήνουν να χαραξω το δικό μου δρόμο.

I’m also a huge hypochondriac and will never sit 13 at a table. I think that is pretty Greek What do your English friends believe about the Greeks and the Greek Crisis? What do they ask you and how do you respond to them?? All of my English friends love Greece and whoever visits walks away with the image of a beautiful county with great culture and hospitable people. Their biggest concern is where will it go from here and if the country can maintain itself. I’m always an optimistic person and I believe Greece will get through the hardships and continue being the place people love. What brings to your mind the greek summer? Land, tastes, sounds, smells ...

Ποιο μαγιό από τη συλλογή σας θα ταίριαζε περισσότερο στη γυναίκα του Astir Palace και γιατί; Κάθε γυναίκα είναι διαφορετική, όμως πιστεύω πως οι γυναίκες του Astir Palace έχουν εξαιρετική αίσθηση του στυλ και της κομψότητας, μιας και είναι ένα resort τόσο όμορφο και classy. The blue sea, the smell of sunscreen lotion - particularly Aethic Sovee, which is the only one I use as it doesn’t harm the seas coral. And always around us is a lot of food. Sometimes I think they are feeding a small village with what they bring us. What do you miss most when you are away from Greece? How often do you visit Greece?

I visit all the time but the longest period I stay is in summer. I miss everything about Greece - my friends, my family, the food. But I’m happy that I go away because when I come back I appreciate it even more. Tell me a few words about Astir Palace. A nice summer memory. One incident ... I have so many memories from the Astir Palace and have spent so much of my childhood there. I think my favourite memory was when my parents took me there for a relaxing day when I was young and I spent the whole time running around the pool with them chasing me. Which swimsuit from your collection would fit more to the woman of Astir Palace and why? Every woman is different but I believe women at the Astir Palace have a great sense of style and elegance as it is such a beautiful and classy resort. Ο σχεδιασμός μας προβλέπει τη δημιουργία ενός ενιαίου μετώπου, με την απελευθέρωση των παραλιών, την κατασκευή πρότυπων οικολογικών πάρκων, ήπιων ξύλινων και κινητών εγκαταστάσεων, πεζοδρομήσεων και ποδηλατοδρόμων. Από την πρώτη στιγμή που αναλάβαμε τη διοίκηση, πρωταρχικό μας μέλημα ήταν να διεκδικήσουμε την παραχώρηση των ακτών στο Δήμο. Το 2012, με συντονισμένες ενέργειες, καταφέραμε να εισάγουμε στη Βουλή σχετική τροπολογία, που όμως δεν κατέστη δυνατόν να ψηφιστεί, λόγω των εκλογών. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, εμείς συνεχίζουμε την προσπάθεια για την υλοποίηση του σχεδίου μας. Και βεβαίως, είμαστε αποφασισμένοι να αντισταθούμε σε οποιοδήποτε σχέδιο απειλεί με υποβάθμιση το παραλιακό μέτωπο. Για μας, η κρίση δεν αποτελεί άλλοθι για συμβιβασμούς σε θέματα που αφορούν άμεσα το μέλλον του τόπου, την ποιότητα της ζωής μας, αλλά και την εμπειρία που προσφέρουμε στους επισκέπτες μας.

The seafront is an integral part of our municipality’s physiognomy. We are committed to protecting it and to showcasing it in a responsible and sustainable way. Our plans entail creating a single seafront by freeing up the beaches, building model ecological parks, using environmentally friendly wooden and mobile installations, paving and bike lanes. When I took over administration of the area, my first concern was to have the coastline transferred to the municipality. In 2012 following a series of coordinated moves we managed to bring an amendment to the legislation before Parliament but it wasn’t possible to vote on it because of the elections. In any event, we will continue our endeavours to implement the plan. We are of course fully committed to resisting any plan that threatens to downgrade the seafront. For us, the crisis is no alibi for compromises on issues that relate to the immediate future of this land, the quality of life, and the experience we offer visitors.

Προτεραιότητά μας είναι να υπερασπιστούμε την οικιστική φυσιογνωμία του τόπου μας και να συνεχίσουμε να προσφέρουμε ένα υψηλό επίπεδο ζωής στους κατοίκους της Βάρης, της Βούλας και της Βουλιαγμένης. Σε αυτή την προσπάθεια, σαφώς αντιμετωπίζουμε μεγάλες δυσκολίες. Αναλάβαμε να οργανώσουμε από την αρχή και μέσα σε ελάχιστο χρόνο ένα νέο Δήμο, συνενώνοντας τρεις διαφορετικές σε οργάνωση και τρόπο λειτουργίας αυτοδιοικητικές οντότητες. Και όλα αυτά σε μια περίοδο οικονομικής κρίσης, όπου η χρηματοδότηση των Δήμων από το κράτος έχει περιοριστεί κατά 70% τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, ενώ έχει μειωθεί και ο αριθμός των εργαζομένων μας. Παρ’ όλες τις δυσκολίες, δεν παραδίδουμε τα όπλα. Έχουμε καταρτίσει ένα ολοκληρωμένο Επιχειρησιακό Πρόγραμμα, πετύχαμε να μειώσουμε τις λειτουργικές δαπάνες του Δήμου κατά 8,1 εκατ. ευρώ και υλοποιούμε ήδη ή προγραμματίζουμε μια σειρά από νέα έργα και παρεμβάσεις, που αναβαθμίζουν την καθημερινότητα των πολιτών σε κάθε γειτονιά της πόλης.

I served as a municipal councillor for 20 years in Vouliagmeni and as deputy mayor and replacement mayor. There we managed to keep the threat of anarchic development at bay by maintaining a consistent stance and by adopting radical measures. Our fellow citizens in the new, enlarged municipality have entrusted us to do exactly what we achieved in Vouliagmeni. Our priority is to safeguard the residential nature of this area and to continue to offer a high standard of living to the residents of Vari, Voula and Vouliagmeni. We are clearly going to face major difficulties in that endeavour. We have undertaken to organise a new municipality from scratch within a short period of time, by joining together three different local government authorities which had their own organisational approaches and modus operandi. All that against the backdrop of an economic crisis where the financing for municipalities from the state has been cut by 70% over the last 2 years, and the number of employees has dropped. Despite the difficulties we are not giving up. We have drawn up a comprehensive business plan, and have managed to reduce the municipality’s operating costs by € 8.1 million and are already implementing our plan to implement a series of new projects and interventions which will improve the dayto-day life of citizens in every neighbourhood of our municipality.

Grigoris Kasidokostas was truly an individual who honoured local government through his actions and not only in his words. His 25year career in the public life is a model for how to be involved in local government, how to get things done and how to make a contribution. He showed what it means to have strong principles and to serve the public with a clear vision. What it means not to compromise, not to be afraid, to dare to go up against vested interests, to protect the quality of life of your fellow citizens. Working beside Grigoris Kasidokostas for two decades I promoted those values and will continue to promote them using all my strength.

The fact that I am not a career politician is something that I believe characterises my life in local government so far. I opted to get involved in public affairs at the age of 23 simply because I was motivated to offer something to the place I was born, using all my knowledge and the experience I had gained through my hard work in the business sector.

Aναρωτιέμαι πραγματικά πώς σας φάνηκε η Ελλάδα όταν προσγειωθήκατε στη Θεσσαλονίκη και στο πρώτο ελληνικό γήπεδο μπάσκετ μετά το «αμερικάνικο όνειρο» του ΝBA. Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που ερχόμουν στην Ελλάδα. Ήταν όμως σα να ήμουν εδώ από πάντα. Η Θεσσαλονίκη μου φάνηκε «μικρή», αλλά «δική μου». Στα δικά μου μάτια, η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι η πιο όμορφη πόλη του κόσμου. Το πρώτο ελληνικό γήπεδο που με φιλοξένησε ήταν το «Αλεξάνδρειο»-πρώτη φορά έβλεπα πλαστικό πάτωμα σε γήπεδο και όχι παρκέ. Ο Red Auerbach, ο «πατριάρχης της Βοστώνης», θα έλεγε χρόνια αργότερα πως το γεγονός ότι δεν σας πρόσφερε συμβόλαιο στους Boston Celtics ήταν το «μεγαλύτερο λάθος» της καριέρας του. Για σας; Ήταν μια μεγάλη χαμένη ευκαιρία ή δεν το σκέφτεστε πια έτσι και - όπως λένε οι Αμερικάνοι - “it's no use crying over spilt milk;” Μα είχα συμβόλαιο με τους Celtics, Προερχόμενος όμως από φτωχή οικογένεια, ο αποκλειστικός λόγος της αποχώρησής μου από το NBA ήταν καθαρά οικονομικός - οι Έλληνες μου πρόσφεραν περισσότερα. Δε μετανιώνω γι'αυτή μου την απόφαση, άλλωστε η Ελλάδα μου πρόσφερε πολλά σε πολλά επίπεδα, όπως κι εγώ από τη μεριά μου, θέλω να πιστεύω. Οι μύθοι που κυκλοφορούν για σας, λένε πως κάνατε πάντα προπόνηση φορώντας ένα γιλέκο που ζύγιζε 8 κιλά, πως σηκώνατε σε θέση καθίσματος πάνω από 200-250 κιλά - όσα θα σήκωνε και ένας Ολυμπιονίκης της άρσης βαρών. Τι απ'όλα αυτά είναι αλήθεια; Η αλήθεια είναι πως έκανα προπόνηση με γιλέκο 25 κιλών και σήκωνα έως και 375 κιλά-λύγιζε η μπάρα .Ο γυμναστής μας είχε δηλώσει πως αν είχα ασχοληθεί με την άρση βαρών, ίσως να είχα κάνει παγκόσμιο ρεκόρ. Εντατική άσκηση, καλή και λιτή διατροφή, μετρημένη ζωή, προσήλωση στο στόχο - είναι αυτό το μυστικό της επιτυχίας του αθλητή; Ή τελικά, αυτό που κάνει τους μεγάλους αθλητές, είναι η μεγάλη, η ατέλειωτη δίψα για νίκη; Μυστική συνταγή δεν υπάρχει. Το ταλέντο είναι προαπαιτούμενο, η σωστή γυμναστική επιβεβλημένη, η υγιεινή διατροφή αδιαμφισβήτητη και η αγάπη για το άθλημα δεδομένη. Αν αυτά συνδυάζονται και μ'ένα δυνατό, υγιές μυαλό, ο αθλητής μπορεί ν'αποτελέσει υποψήφιο «super star». Τα αμέτρητα κατορθώματά σας έχουν περιγραφεί, υμνηθεί, συνοψισθεί στο παρατσούκλι «ο Θεός»- τώρα κρέμονται στην κορυφή της σάλας «Νίκος Γκάλης». Αλήθεια όμως, εσείς για τι απ'όσα καταφέρατε νιώθετε πραγματικά περήφανος; Περήφανο με κάνουν οι ευχαριστίες των γονιών για το ότι βοήθησα ώστε τα παιδιά τους να στραφούν στον αθλητισμό και να απομακρυνθούν από «κακοτοπιές». Και,πάνω απ'όλα, η αγάπη του κόσμου που εκδηλώνεται αγνά και αμείωτα μέχρι και σήμερα.

I was wondering how Greece appeared to you when you landed at Thessaloniki, and saw your first Greek basketball court after the ‘American Dream’ that is the NBA? It was the first time I came to Greece. However, it was as if I’d always been here. Thessaloniki appeared to be small to me, but mine. In my eyes, Thessaloniki is the most beautiful city in the world. The first Greek court I played on was at the Alexandrio, it was the first time I’d seen plastic flooring on a court rather than wood. Red Auerbach, the Boston patriarch, said years later that the fact that he didn’t offer you a contract with the Boston Celtics was the greatest mistake of his career. Was it a great lost opportunity for you or do you no longer think about it that way? As the Americans say would you say there’s no use crying over spilt milk? But I did have a contract with the Celtics. I came from a poor family, and my only reason for leaving the NBA was purely financial. The Greeks offered me more. I don’t regret that decision. In any event Greece offered me a lot on many levels, just like I did. At least I would like to think that I did. The urban myths that circulate about you say that you always trained wearing an 8 kilo jacket, that from seated position you could lift 200 to 250 kilos, i.e. the same weight an Olympic weightlifter can lift. Is any of that true? The truth is that I used to train with a 25 kilo jacket and lifted up

to 375 kilos. The bar actually bent. My trainer told me that if I had got into weightlifting I might have got myself a world record. Intensive exercise, a good, simple diet, a moderate life, dedication to target, does all that make for the recipe for success for an athlete? Or is it the great, endless hunger for victory that makes great athletes? There is no secret recipe. Talent is a prerequisite. Proper exercise is a must. Healthy eating is an undoubted factor and you have to love the sport. If all that is combined with a strong, healthy mind the athlete can become a potential super star. Your countless achievements have been described and praised a lot, and are summed up in the nickname ‘God’. Now your achievements are on display at the end of the Nikos Galis Hall. What are you really proud of from among all your achievements? I am proud of the thanks from parents for helping their children turn to sport and get away from bad habits. Above all, I am proud of the love people show me, a pure, undiminished love even to this day. What makes you support events like the Nikos Galis Basketorama that bears your name, and why do you believe that sport is important for kids? I will always support events that provide opportunities and escape routes for young kids and i will always support ‘clean’ support to be best of my ability.

O κορυφαίος παίκτης στην ιστορία του ελληνικού μπάσκετ ήταν και πάλι ο σταρ της τελετής λήξης στο «BASKETORAMA ΝΙΚΟΣ ΓΚΑΛΗΣ». Πρόκειται για το ΤΟΥΡΝΟΥΑ BASKET ΜΙΚΡΩΝ ΗΛΙΚΙΩΝ, το μεγαλύτερο αγωνιστικό τουρνουά και πρωτάθλημα basket που πραγματοποιείται σε ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα για παιδιά ηλικίας 7-16 χρονών. Το τουρνουά, στο οποίο συμμετέχουν 185 ομάδες - περίπου 2.900 παιδιά - διοργανώθηκε για 17η συνεχόμενη χρονιά και ο Νίκος Γκάλης βράβευσε τους MVP, καθώς και τις ομάδες που κατέκτησαν τις πρώτες θέσεις. The top player in the history of Greek basketball was, once again, the star at the closing ceremony of "BASKETORAMA NIKOS GALIS". The event is a BASKET BALL TOURNAMENT FOR THE YOUNG, the largest competitive tournament and basketball championship held in all of Greece for children aged 7 to 16. “The feeling I get every day when I pass the gateway to the NASA base in Ames in Silicon Valley is magical. I’m awake in my childhood dream”. That’s what the 25-year old graduate of the University of Sterea Ellada’s Dept. of Biomedicine who recently won a scientist of the year award at the FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards in London has to say. An innovator in regenerative medicine technology and in artificial organs technology from the age of 22 when she founded the company Transplants Without Donors, she now spends 6 months of the year at the University of Illinois. Δυο μόλις χρόνια χρειάστηκε ο απόφοιτος του ΤΕΙ Βιομηχανικού Σχεδιασμού Κοζάνης για να βρεθεί στο Instituto Europeo di Design, στην Ιταλία και από εκεί στο Σαλόνι της Γενεύης, όπου και παρουσιάστηκε η Alfa Romeo Gloria, το αυτοκίνητο, το εξωτερικό του οποίου σχεδίασε στα πλαίσια της πρακτικής του στην θρυλική Alfa Romeo. «Η Gloria, είναι όντως η «γυναίκα της ζωής μου». Τώρα πια αυτό που θα ήθελα να δω είναι ένα αυτοκίνητό μου στην παραγωγή. Θέλω να πιστεύω ότι μέσα στα επόμενα χρόνια, αν όλα πάνε καλά, αυτό μπορεί να συμβεί». Στην περίπτωση του «ταλαντούχου κύριου Λιώκη», όλα ξεκίνησαν από μια παρατημένη σε ένα χωράφι Citroen DS που αγόρασαν με τον αδελφό του όταν ήταν 13 ετών και την οποία, ένα χρόνο μετά, παρακαλούσαν τον πατέρα τους να την οδηγήσει στο πρώτο τους ράλι αντίκα. Το γεγονός ότι προέρχεται από μια χώρα χωρίς, όπως υποστηρίζει, αυτοκινητιστική παιδεία, καθιστά το επίτευγμά του ακόμη πιο εντυπωσιακό. «Αλλά επειδή πλαισιωνόμουν από ανθρώπους που αγαπούσαν το αυτοκίνητο, ξεκίνησα και εγώ να το αγαπάω. Τότε ακριβώς, σε 300 πευκόφυτα στρέμματα, στο Λαιμό της Βουλιαγμένης, στην καρδιά της αθηναϊκής Ριβιέρας, γεννιέται ο «Αστέρας» - το ξενοδοχειακό συγκρότημα που θα γίνει αμέσως το αγαπημένο prive club διακοπών της αθηναϊκής ελίτ, καθώς προσφέρει κάτι μοναδικό: ησυχία και χαλάρωση μέσα σε μια οργιαστική ελληνική φύση, άρτιες υποδομές και ένα exclusive περιβάλλον κομψής και διακριτικής πολυτέλειας. Η αρχή γίνεται το 1960. Το ανέφελο σκηνικό διακοπών συμπλήρωνε το «Club House», το εστιατόριο- προορισμός για το κεφάτο κοσμικό crowd των πελατών του ξενοδοχείου, όπου θα γραφόταν ένα από τα πρώτα λαμπρά κεφάλαια στην ιστορία του «Astir Palace».

• At the start of the 1960s Greece took its first furtive steps towards becoming a global tourist destination, and a new, dynamic and well-heeled urban class with a strong cosmopolitan bent was seeking out its very own set of iconic symbols. It was at that time that the Astir was born. Located among 30 pine-decked hectares on the Vouliagmeni promontory in the very heart of the Athens Riviera, it was a hotel complex that immediately became the favourite prive club of the Athens elite for their holidays because it offered something quite unique: total quiet and relaxation amid the verdant green of the Greek countryside, perfect infrastructure and an exclusive environment offering elegant, discrete luxury. The story started in 1960. The Astir’s famous cabins located on the golden sandy beaches at Vouligameni, so synonymous with nonchalance and the summer sensation of dolce far niente, were an immediate hit with their celebrity residents, and quite often as the years went by the cabins become a second home for many of them. This carefree holiday scene was finished off with the Club House, a restaurant attracting a mirthful, worldly crowd of hotel guests; and the place where one of the first great chapters in the history of Astir Palace was written. Καθώς, χρόνο με το χρόνο η ζήτηση για τις καμπάνες μεγάλωνε, σύντομα κρίθηκε επιτακτική η ανέγερση του πρώτου ξενοδοχείου του συγκροτήματος: το πολυτελές και αριστοκρατικό «Αρίων» εγκαινιάστηκε το 1967. Το «Ναυσικά», με την εμβληματική 70’s αρχιτεκτονική και την πισίνα που για δεκαετίες υπήρξε το απόλυτο meeting point του επιχειρηματικού, πολιτικού, δημοσιογραφικού και καλλιτεχνικού κόσμου άνοιξε τις πόρτες του το 1980, ενώ το - πιο ήσυχο και οικογενειακό «Αφροδίτη» με την ανεμπόδιστη θέα στο Αιγαίο, κατασκευάστηκε το 1984. Ο μύθος, όμως, του «Αστέρα» είχε χτιστεί πολύ νωρίτερα. Και ο μύθος αυτός δεν είχε να κάνει μόνο με glam δεξιώσεις, κοσμικές πισίνες ή χρυσές πλαζ, μαρμάρινες σκάλες ή υπέροχα έργα τέχνης σαν κι αυτά που φιγουράρουν στους τοίχους του ξενοδοχείου, δια χειρός Γύζη, Τσαρούχη, Εγγονόπουλου, Μόραλη και Μυταρά. Ήταν ο μύθος που έφτιαξαν οι σταρ. Γιατί αυτό που κυρίως συνέλεγε - και συλλέγει ακόμα - ο «Αστέρας» είναι VIPS. Από τα δωμάτιά του έχουν περάσει σχεδόν anybody who’s somebody: κοσμικοί και jet-setters, εφοπλιστές, βιομήχανοι και μεγαλοεπιχειρηματίες, κορυφαίοι sportsmen και σταρ της showbiz, βασιλιάδες, πρίγκηπες, ηγέτες κρατών, o Ρόμπερτ Κένεντι, ο Τζίμι Κάρτερ και η Σοράγια, ο Γκορμπατσόφ και ο Μπόρις Γέλτσιν. Στις παραλίες του «Αστέρα» απολάμβαναν τον ήλιο o Ανταμό, ο Σαρλ Αζναβούρ και η Δαλιδά, η Νάνα Μούσχουρη, ο Ντέμης Ρούσος και ο Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου, αλλά και η σταρ της ποπ, Lady Gaga, η οποία έμεινε στην προεδρική σουίτα του «Αρίωνα» - την ίδια όπου έχουν φιλοξενηθεί ο Φρανσουά Μιτεράν, ο Βαλερί Ζισκάρ ντ’Εστέν, η Μάργκαρετ Θάτσερ και ο στρατάρχης Τίτο, ο Χέλμουτ Κολ, ο Nέλσον Μαντέλα και ο Γιασέρ Αραφάτ, ο Ζακ Σιράκ και ο Ζακ Ντελόρ. As demand for the cabins grew year after year, it was soon considered essential to build the first hotel at the complex: the luxurious and aristocratic Arion which opened its doors in 1967. The Nafsika with its emblematic 1970s architecture and pool, which was ‘the’ meeting point for businessmen, politicians, journalists and artists for decades, opened its doors in 1980 while the quieter more family-oriented Aphrodite was built in 1984 offering an uninterrupted view of the Aegean. However, the Astir had become a legend much earlier. That legend doesn’t just have to do with the glam receptions, cosmopolitan pools or golden beaches, marble staircases or wonderful works of art adorning the hotel’s walls painted by famous artists such as Gyzis, Tsarouchis, Engonopoulos, Moralis and Mytaras. It was a legend based on the stars. ...which is why the people attracted to and who continue to be attracted to the Astir are VIPs. Almost everybody who’s somebody has slept in one of its rooms: Cosmopolitan players and jet setters, ship owners, industrialists and big businessmen, top sportsmen and the stars of showbiz, kings, princes, heads of state, Robert Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Soraya, Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin. The Beatles, Adamo, Charles Aznavour and Dalida, Nana Mouscouri, Demis Roussos and Vangelis Papathanasiou as well as the pop star Lady Gaga have sunned themselves at the Astir’s beaches. Lady Gaga in fact stayed in the presidential suite at the Arion, which had previously hosted Francois Mitterrand, Valerie Giscard d’Estaing, Margaret Thatcher and General Tito, Helmut Kohl, Nelson Mandela and Yasser Arafat. Konstantinos Karamanlis was a regular at the Astir, like many other Presidents of the Hellenic Republic including Stasinopoulos, Tsatsos, Sartzetakis and Stefanopoulos. Former PM

Back when Princess Stephanie of Monaco was trying to have a singing career, she arrived at the hotel with her group and set up stage on the balcony of the Club House to film a video clip with Vouliagmeni Bay as the backdrop. The incomparably beautiful Bridget Bardot stayed in 1969 at the Astir for a few short days of holidays and sent a ripple of excitement around the beach when she appeared in her tiny pink bikini, wooden platform shoes and massive sunhat. A few years later at the historic parties held at the 9 Muses club, the hotel’s legendary club, Paloma Picasso and Liza Minelli partied the night away with the very best of Athens’ youth from that time, actors and fashion designers, singers, footballers and ambitious ingénues: Zoe Laskari and Philimon, Ellie Stai and Elias Psinakis. Of course the stars didn’t only come in the 1960s and 1970s. More recent guests at the Astir Palace include Pierce Brosnan, the Scorpions, the soprano Agnes Baltsa as well as Carman Electra, the celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Sasha Baron Cohen, Gianni Bulgari (friendly and very sociable), Vittorio Missoni (before his dramatic disappearance of course) and Dean and Dan of Dsquared fame. Maradona visited the hotel twice, Pele once (everyone recalls that he was very talkative, friendly and a real pleasure to be around), and Michel Platini has also stayed. Regular guests are Christian Karembeu and Ronaldinho and the star of French television Nikos Alagias before he became a father was a regular weekend guest, though he was low key and made sure he largely went unnoticed. Major figures, VIP guests, leading political events and cosmopolitan happenings all combine together to make up the Astir Palace’s profile. The stage is a hotel akin to a Greek Hollywood which for more than half a century has been attracting the very crème de la crème...

Those are the words of Stavros Benos, chairman of Diazoma (www.diazoma.gr), a charitable organisation dedicated to protecting and showcasing ancient theatres Diazoma gives Greek and foreign visitors the chance to take part in the ‘Adopt an Ancient Theatre’ scheme whose aim is to study ancient theatres, preserve them and integrate them into our day-to-day lives. One illustrative example of how an ancient theatre can become an integral part of global cultural events is the ancient theatre of Epidaurus. Famed for its acoustics, it is located at the Ascleipeion archaeological site in the Prefecture of the Argolid, can seat up to 14,000 spectators maximum and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monument. Ο κατάλογος των παραστάσεων που έγραψαν ιστορία εδώ είναι μακρύς. Το 1938 δόθηκε η πρώτη, μετά την αρχαιότητα παράσταση με την «Ηλέκτρα» του Εθνικού Θεάτρου, σε σκηνοθεσία Δημήτρη Ροντήρη και πρωταγωνίστρια την Κατίνα Παξινού. Το 1955, τα επίσημα εγκαίνια του Φεστιβάλ Επιδαύρου άνοιξαν η Κατίνα Παξινού και ο Αλέξης Μινωτής με την «Εκάβη» του Ευριπίδη, κορυφαία παραγωγή του Εθνικού Θεάτρου. Από το αργολικό θέατρο δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει και η συγκλονιστική Μαρία Κάλλας, που το 1960 ερμήνευσε την «Νόρμα» του Μπελίνι και την αμέσως επόμενη χρονιά, την «Μήδεια» του Κερουμπίνι (1961). the post of chairman of the Greek Festival, Epidaurus began hosting major foreign productions that created a stir and were much talked about internationally. Just some of those important works include ‘A Winter’s Tale’ directed by Sam Mendes starring Ethan Hawke, or ‘Phaedra’ starring Helen Mirren staged in 2009, or ‘Richard III’ also directed by Sam Mendes starring Kevin Spacey, staged in 2011. The list of history-making shows is long indeed. The first performance of 'Electra' since antiquity was staged at Epidaurus in 1938 by the Greek National Theatre directed by Dimitris Rontiris starring Katina Paxinou. In 1955 the Epidaurus Festival was officially launched by Katina Paxinou and Alexis Minotis with Euripides 'Hecuba', one of the National Theatre's leading productions. Of course one must not forget to mention that Maria Callas also appeared at this Argolid theatre performing 'Norma' by Bellini in 1960 and in the following year (1961) performed 'Medea' by Cherubini. Στην κοιτίδα του αρχαίου θέατρου In the cradle of ancient theatre Τα αρχαία θέατρα αποτελούν κορυφαία επιτεύγματα του αρχαίου ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Έργα τέχνης, που ενσωματώνουν στις λεπτομέρειές τους ότι καλύτερο διαθέτει το Ελληνικό πνεύμα. Το θέατρο Διονύσου, που βρίσκεται στη νότια πλαγιά της Ακρόπολης και αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του ιερού του Διονύσου, είναι το αρχαιότερο θέατρο που υπάρχει σήμερα. Θεμελιώθηκε πιθανώς τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ.. Eδώ παρουσίασαν τα έργα τους οι μεγάλοι τραγικοί -Αισχύλος, Σοφοκλής, Ευριπίδης- εδώ κάθισαν κάποτε ως θεατές ο Σόλων, ο Περικλής, ο Σωκράτης, ο Πλάτωνας, ο Αριστοτέλης. Είναι το πιο σημαντικό από τα 15 συνολικά θέατρα που υπάρχουν εντός του Νομού Αττικής και βρίσκεται σε απόσταση αναπνοής από το συγκρότημα του Αστέρα Βουλιαγμένης. Κοντά στο συγκρότημα βρίσκονται και το Ηρώδειο, το θέατρο Θορικού στο Λαύριο, αλλά και το θέατρο Αμφιαρείου στον Ωρωπό. Είναι εύκολα προσβάσιμα στην λογική ημερήσιας εκδρομής, το ίδιο όμως ισχύει και για τα έξι θέατρα της Κορινθίας, τα έξι της Στερεάς Ελλάδας, καθώς επίσης και το αρχαίο θέατρο των Δελφών, που φιλοξενούσε τους αγώνες φωνητικής και ενόργανης μουσικής στο πλαίσιο των Πυθικών Αγώνων.

Ancient theatres are one of the top achievements of ancient Greek culture and civilisation. They are works of art incorporating into their fabric the very best that the Greek intellect has to offer. The theatre of Dionysus located on the southern slopes of the Acropolis, and forming an integral part of the sanctuary of Dionysus, is the oldest theatre still in existence today. In all likelihood its foundations were laid in the 6th century BC and here the great tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, staged their works. Here too Solon, Pericles, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle would have sat as spectators. It is the most important of the 15 theatres located in the Prefecture of Attica and is located a short distance away from the Astir Palace complex. Also close to the complex is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the theatre of Thoriko at Lavrio and the theatre of Amphiareion at Oropos. They are all easily accessible as part of a day trip, but the same also holds true for the 6 theatres in the Prefecture of Corinth, the 6 theatres in the Sterea Ellada Region, and the ancient theatre of Delphi which used to host singing and music contests as part of the Pythian Games.

Τα αρχαία θέατρα ως εστία τησ δημοκρατίας Έχει σημασία να γνωρίζουμε πως το θέατρο στην αρχαία Ελλάδα δεν πρόσφερε ψυχαγωγία, με την σύγχρονη έννοια του όρου, αλλά αποτελούσε έναν εξαιρετικά σημαντικό θεσμό της αρχαιοελληνικής πόλης-κράτους, που διαμόρφωνε συνειδήσεις και είχε έντονο πολιτικό, κοινωνικό και θρησκευτικό χαρακτήρα. Αναπτύχθηκε στα τέλη της αρχαϊκής περιόδου και γνώρισε την άνθησή του στην κλασική περίοδο και κυρίως στην Αθήνα όπου, με την ευκαιρία των εορτασμών προς τιμήν του θεού Διονύσου, ανέβαιναν τέσσερις φορές το χρόνο θεατρικές παραστάσεις. Τις παραστάσεις παρακολουθούσαν, συμμετείχαν και χρηματοδοτούσαν Αθηναίοι πολίτες. Αν συνυπολογίσουμε ότι το θέατρο ήταν δημόσιο οίκημα, η συγκέντρωση σε αυτό έμοιαζε με μια άλλου τύπου -και πιο ουσιαστική για κάποιους- εκκλησία του δήμου. Κάθε άλλο παρά αμελητέα είναι και η αρχιτεκτονική διάσταση του θέματος, καθώς το αρχαίο ελληνικό θέατρο αποτελεί, κατά κοινή ομολογία, το κορυφαίο επίτευγμα της αρχαίας ελληνικής αρχιτεκτονικής, το οποίο συνεχίζει να αντιγράφεται και να αποτελεί πρότυπο ως τις μέρες μας, 2500 χρόνια μετά. Για όλους αυτούς τους λόγους, μια επίσκεψη στα αρχαία ελληνικά θέατρα είναι προαπαιτούμενο κάθε συνειδητοποιημένου επισκέπτη, που επιθυμεί να κατανοήσει τον Ελληνικό πολιτισμό με τρόπο βαθύ και ουσιαστικό.

Ancient theatres as the hotbed of Democracy It is important to realise that theatre in ancient Greece was not merely a form of entertainment in the modern sense of the word but was an exceptionally important institution of the ancient Greek city state which shaped the mind of citizens and had a strong political, social and religious character. Theatre emerged at the end of the Archaic period and flourished in the Classic period, principally in Athens where theatrical performances were staged four times a year as part of the festivities held in honour of the god Dionysus. These performances were attended, participated in and financed by Athenian citizens. If one takes into account that the theatre was a public building, this gathering of people resembled another form of gathering, the ecclesia (assembly) of the deme (the people), and in the view of some was more important. The architectural aspect of the issue is also of great importance since ancient Greek theatres are commonly agreed upon as being the top achievement of ancient Greek architecture and the standard they set continues to be copied even 2,500 years later. For all these reasons a visit to ancient Greek theatres is a real must for any sophisticated visitor who wants to understand Greek culture in a deeper, more substantive way. The glamorous premiere of the show "Ticket to Bollywood” took place at the Cosmos Hall at the Astir Vouliagmenis attended by the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Olga Kefalogianni, and the Ambassador of India, Mr. Tsewant Topden. Official guests and hundreds of visitors who had purchased tickets enjoyed a phantasmagorical show from the 25-strong dance group "Ticket to Bollywood" who brought the magic and imagination of Bollywood films to Greece and the Astir Palace Resort. The colours, music, dance, smiles and applause made this an utterly successful performance. At the end of the show the dancers invited the audience to come up onto the stage and dance with them. The Festival of Turkish Cuisine was organised under the aegis of the Embassy of Turkey in collaboration with Turkish Airlines and the magazine Athens Insider. Outstanding chefs from the Sheraton Maslak Hotel travelled especially for the occasion from Istanbul and created great dishes, cooking authentic Turkish food from 12 to 21 April 2013 at the Hotel Arion Resort & Spa at the Astir Vouliagmenis. The 2nd Festival of Turkish Cuisine is part of the Astir Palace's imitative to integrate ethnic cuisines into its menus and to offer the food-loving Athens' public the chance to get to know the rich heritage of Turkish cuisine.

A mysterious, charming island with much well-hidden beauty that you really should dedicate quite some time to exploring. That’s precisely where its charm lies. Kea, or Tzia as it is also known, is no ordinary Cyclades island. It is an alternative Cyclades island.

Γι’ αυτό, ίσως, τελευταία, αναδεικνύεται σε... ησυχαστήριο για πολλούς κοσμοπολίτες, κυρίως Αθηναίους. Παράλληλα, το νησί αποτελεί σημείο συνάντησης για fun ιστιοπλόους και αναδεικνύεται σε top προορισμό για weekenders, που το προτιμούν, εκτός των άλλων, για την κοντινή του απόσταση από την πρωτεύουσα. Η Κέα, παρά την ανάπτυξη του τουρισμού τα τελευταία χρόνια, διατηρεί αναλλοίωτη την παραδοσιακή της ταυτότητα, γεγονός το οποίο εντυπωσιάζει τον επισκέπτη. Αυτό ισχύει και για τις παραλίες της, οι οποίες παραμένουν αλώβητες από την τουριστική ανάπτυξη, διατηρώντας την παρθένα ομορφιά τους. Από το ένα άκρο του νησιού ως το άλλο, απάνεμοι κολπίσκοι με καταγάλανα νερά, αποτελούν αγαπημένο αραξοβόλι για σκάφη και φουσκωτά, ενώ δυσπρόσιτες παραλίες προσφέρονται για απομόνωση. Καλησκιά, Λιπαρό, Συκαμιά, Ξύλα και Καλυδονύχι είναι μερικές από αυτές. Για όσους πάλι παραμένουν πιστοί οπαδοί των... comforts, το νησί διαθέτει μία σειρά από οργανωμένες παραλίες με ξαπλώστρες και ομπρέλες, όπως ο Οτζιάς, ο Κούνδουρος, οι Ποίσσες και το Γιαλισκάρι.

It is home to trendy beach bars which are the defining feature of some other Cyclades island, but if that is what you’re looking for in an island then its best to choose another destination because quite simply Kea moves to a different, more earthly rhythm. That is perhaps why over recent times it has become a refuge for many of the cosmopolitan crowd, especially those from Athenians. At the same time the island is a meeting point for fun yachters and has become a top destination for weekenders who prefer it for various reasons but primarily because it’s so close to the capital. Despite the growth in tourism over recent years, Kea has managed to retain its traditional character which impresses visitors. That also goes for its beaches, which remain untouched by tourist development, and have retained their virgin beauty. From one end of the island to the other, leeward bays with deep blue waters are favourite anchorage spots for inflatables and yachts, while more inaccessible beaches are ideal if you want to spend some time on your own. Kaliskia, Liparo, Sykamia, Xyla and Kalydonichi are just some of them. If you still like your comforts though, the island has a series of well organised beaches with sunbeds and umbrellas like Otzia, Koundouros, Pisses and Gialiskari. After your swim and after having explored the island’s beautiful, sandy, clean beaches and a string of quaint fishing villages, head up to Ioulida.

Μετά το μπάνιο και αφού ανακαλύψει κανείς τις όμορφες, αμμώδεις και πεντακάθαρες παραλίες του νησιού και μια σειρά από γραφικά ψαροχώρια, σειρά έχει η Ιουλίδα. Η χώρα με το μοναδικό ηλιοβασίλεμα, τα πέτρινα σοκάκια και το σκαλισμένο στο βράχο λιοντάρι, στο πάνω μέρος της πόλης, το οποίο χρονολογείται στα Αρχαϊκά Χρόνια και αποτελεί το σήμα κατατεθέν της. Χτισμένη αμφιθεατρικά, πάνω σε έναν βράχο, στραμμένο να κοιτάζει τη θάλασσα, η Ιουλίδα είναι μία από τις πιο όμορφες χώρες των Κυκλάδων. Τα ερείπια του βενετσιάνικου κάστρου, τα εντυπωσιακά νεοκλασικά, όπως το Δημαρχείο, το οποίο φέρει την υπογραφή του Γερμανού αρχιτέκτονα Ερνστ Τσίλερ, όπως και το νεοκλασικό κτίριο που στέγαζε το δημοτικό σχολείο, δίνουν μία ξεχωριστή νότα στην πόλη. Στην Ιουλίδα βρίσκεται το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο της Κέας, το οποίο φιλοξενεί ευρήματα από ανασκαφές σε προϊστορικούς οικισμούς, ευρήματα από τους Ιστορικούς Χρόνους και τμήματα αρχαίου ναού της πόλης Καρθαίας. Μια βόλτα που πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να κάνει κάποιος είναι στο Μοναστήρι της Παναγίας της Καστριανής, όχι τόσο για αυτό καθ’ αυτό το μοναστήρι, αλλά για τη θέα που προσφέρει, χτισμένο σε έναν απόκρυμνο βράχο, στη βόρεια πλευρά του νησιού. Το όμορφο νησί της Κέας διατηρεί τoν μοναδικό του χαρακτήρα και στη νυχτερινή διασκέδαση. Εδώ δεν θα βρεις στη σειρά τα μεγάλα, πολύβουα κλαμπ, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι οι αιώνιοι έφηβοι θα πρέπει να απαρνηθούν τον dance χαρακτήρα τους. Στον Κούνδουρο και την Ιουλίδα η διασκέδαση έχει πιο ήπιο χαρακτήρα. The island’s capital is the ideal place from which to see the sunset, and offers stone paved lanes and a rock-carved lion in the upper part of the town dating from the Archaic period, and the trade mark of Ioulida. Built amphitheatre-like on a rock and looking out to sea, Ioulida is one of the most beautiful island capitals in the Cyclades group. The ruins of the Venetian castle, the impressive neoclassical houses like the current town hall which was designed by the German architect Ernst Ziller, and the neoclassical building that houses the primary schools, give the town a special air. Ioulida is also home to Kea’s Archaeological Museum which hosts finds from excavations of prehistoric villages, finds from the historic period and sections of the ancient temple of the city of Karthaia. One essential trip is to the Monastery of Panagia Kastriani, not so much for the monastery itself but for the view it offers. The mona stery is built on a precipitous rock in the north of the island. The charming island of Kea also retains its unique character when it comes to nightlife. Kea doesn’t have a series of large, noisy clubs but that doesn’t mean that the eternal teenagers will have to forego dancing totally. In Koundouros and Ioulida entertainment is lower key. Atmospheric bars playing soul music are ideal for romantic moments or relaxation, with good company and a charming view of the star-studded sky, but if you’re looking for more upbeat bars then head to Vourkari. There are a few clubs of Korissia that play pop and dance music till the early hours of the morning. One other thing that sets Kea apart from other Cyclades islands is that it is not a barren land. In the hinterland rich vegetation, rare species of plant and forests of royal oaks create an unforgettable landscape that is home to a range of wild animals.

Kea offers a diverse range of places to stay, ranging from deluxe hotels to whole homes, and agrotourism chalets. The luxury Aigis Suits in Vourkari, with its romantic décor, designed by the architect Christos Vlachos, guarantees a stay in style, as does the Porto Kea Suites a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group located at the edge of the port. The stone-built Keos Homes located just a stone’s throw from the port are a unique refuge, while one other suggestion about where to stay are the Red Tractor farm chalets.

Where to eat

With a rich cuisine and a gastronomic tradition stretching back many years, Kea has quite a few choices for good, traditional food or gourmet dishes. The Aristos tavern in Vourkari is popular with those mooring their boats there. Try the super lobster pasta and kakavia (a type of fish stew) and the unique dishes cooked in olive oil, while for good fish go to Ennea Kores, a traditional tavern for fish lovers with a magical view and friendly staff in Vourkari too. Steki tou Strongylou is the place to go to enjoy authentic Greek dishes and a range of mezes for bon viveurs, while Anna’s Tavern with a view over the picturesque port of Otzia serves up the best coq au vin ever.

If you’re looking for a good night out on Kea then try Papa Doble in Korissia. Refreshing cocktails and a well-stocked cellar of brandname wines are served up to the sounds of jazz and electro swing. If you want to party all night long then try Vinylio one of the Cyclades’ most legendary bars in Vourkari which primarily plays foreign mainstream hits.
