Welcome

The Spirit of the Achuar The Achuar and indigenous people of the Amazonian basin have inhabited the Rainforest for thousands of years and they have great knowledge about the natural environment. They are experts in the use and resource management that have allowed people and ecosystems to live in harmony. The jungle is the mother that nourishes them and within this web of life of forest trails, streams and rivers; here they fish, hunt and grow as they have always done. An Achuar is a living encyclopedia that can recognize each bird and other animals with which they share the forest. Form each plant and from every tree they can explain its benefits and medical applications they have learned from their grandparents. According to them, every plant and animal also has its own soul and life. Arutum is the great spirit of the jungle who guides and protects. A native Achuar guide and a formally trained naturalist guide will accompany you in your exploration of the Amazonian jungle.

The Rainforest

Rainforests cover less than two percent of the Earth’s surface. It is the home of 50 to 70 percent of all life forms on our planet. Rainforest are the most productive and most complex ecosystems on earth.

Your trip to the Rainforest Kapawi's staff will continually assist you from the beginning of your excursion. Your naturalist guide will accompany you from the first part of your adventure to Kapawi. You will take the land route from the 2880 meters that are Quito through the spectacular "Avenue of the Volcanoes" to the entrance to the Amazon.

Kapawi Ecolodge sits deep in Ecuador’s south eastern part of the Amazon Basin, near the Peruvian Border. Just a few miles from the Pastaza River, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon, the lodge was built in Achuar territory in 1993. It is a remote and pristine region, untouched by logging, mining or petroleum extraction. The closest road is a ten day walk from the lodge. Kapawi itself is accessible only by air.

Here an Achuar coordinator will help you in boarding a small airplane to start a great flight over the Amazon and you will be able to enjoy the majestic Amazon basin towards the heart of the jungle. You can also choose premier air travel from Quito to Kapawi. Once on land, you will be greeted by the native staff of Kapawi who will take you on a short canoe trip to the Lodge. Kay Sanderson

Nature

This jewel with about 700 thousand hectares is home to the densest concentration of plant, insect and animal species on Earth. The richness of the Amazon’s biological diversity has not been completely cataloged, and scientists consider the Amazon to be one of the key “endangered places” on the planet.

“Kapawi is miraculous. Guided by the Achuar, and being a part of their relationship with nature, I felt like I was being initiated into a special knowledge of the earth. It was a sacred place, a sacred space, and a sacred experience. I have returned again, and it won’t be my last trip!” Tom Koening

My stay at the Kapawi Ecolodge was truly one of the most magical experiences of my life. I have stayed at other ecolodges in the Amazon and elsewhere in South America and not a single one holds a candle to Kapawi. Whether walking through the rainforest learning about healing plants, trolling for monkeys, birds, pink dolphins, and caiman on the nearby rivers, or sharing a traditional meal, our Achuar guides and the Ecuadorean naturalists left an indelible imprint. I’m forever transformed by the total Kapawi experience! Key Anderson
