ALPHA TAU–HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
Exemplifying Leadership on the Gridiron
Marty Favret, head football coach at Hampden-Sydney College, announced the team captains for the upcoming 2020 season. Along with three others, senior defensive back Riggs Jordan (Alpha Tau–Hampden-Sydney ’18) was selected to lead the Tigers after serving in the leadership role last season as well.
“Riggs has really developed both as a player and as a true leader,” Coach Favret said in 2019. “His boundless energy is on display every day, from the weight room to the practice eld. The fact that he was voted captain as a junior is a testament to how his teammates feel about him.”
Describing himself as a vocal person, Riggs believes that is just one of the reasons his teammates voted to have him lead the team. “I’d say I’m one of the more
vocal people on this football team.” Riggs vocal people on this football team.” Riggs explained. “I try to keep a positive attitude, honestly. I’m a rm believer in a positive attitude being contagious. I just try to keep everybody’s spirits up no matter how the game is going, just keep ghting, keep pushing, and don’t quit.”
More than just attitude and a vocal demeaner, Riggs has the career stats to back it up. He has racked up 82 total tackles, including 46 solo and 36 assists, 9.5 tackles for loss, one interception for a touchdown, one blocked point after touchdown attempt, along with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovered. “I was really honored, and really humbled, to be named a team captain,” said Riggs in 2019. “Not many juniors get that chance, that opportunity, to be a leader on their team. I was just really happy that my teammates trusted me enough to choose me as one of the captains.” Riggs and the Hapden-Sydney Tigers hope to have a successful season this fall.
