Introduction
Solar Powered
The use of solar energy to continually self-power instrumentation is becoming evermore popular as environmental monitoring and control becomes a fundamental necessity in many countries. The idea that instruments can be self powered is not a new concept, however with the increasing cost of providing energy and the underlying civil engineering costs it is becoming more commonplace for many customers to consider this as an option as opposed to continually powered systems. In theory many instruments could be self powered by basically making use of photovoltaic solar panels with a regulator charging a battery that in turn supplies an instrument. In practice getting the balance between consumption and supply on solar Instruments is the key as to whether or not a system is viable to self power. Timing and regulation of the power to the instrument is one of the most important factors to consider and control with any solar powered system. Initially all of our self powered systems relied on matching the instrument supply voltage to the stored voltage, however with the use of inverters it is possible to increase the 12 Volt supply from the battery up to 230Vac and power an expanded range of instrumentation.

Our original designs of solar powered systems were largely focused on the need to self power oil separator or interceptor alarms where they were often retrofitted at existing sites adjacent to motorways or in relatively remote areas where no mains power was available. Over the past few years the possibilities of self powering instruments has expanded to meet various different applications, the majority of these remaining as intrinsically safe systems. As mentioned previously the balance of consumption against supply needs to be carefully controlled therefore the individual characteristics of each monitoring instrument needs to be assessed and timed so as to allow the battery sufficient time to recharge and keep the instrument active. This process is maintained and controlled by the use of a programmable microcontroller that periodically activates relays to the controller for a set period of time then returning it to rest in order to recharge. This balance is crucial as any active alarms will inevitably drain the battery of power if left unacknowledged. Typically the choice of using a solar powered instrument is made because the site is either remote or impractical to run a mains power supply into, incorporating an optional GSM modem into

Introduction
solar powered systems means that in many cases SMS text messages can be sent to mobile phones alerting that an alarm is present at a particular site, or alternatively secondary alarm control panels can have alarms activated by using receiving GSM modems with relay outputs that are programmed to recognise the incoming alarm number and activate a relevant site alarm. As with all GSM modems effective use is only as good as the network coverage in a particular area so this factor needs to be considered if the site is remote or if signal strengths vary, or are intermittent. As the systems we produce rely on sunlight to keep the battery charged therefore the positioning and angling the solar panel enclosure is important to ensure that the maximum amount of sunlight reaches the panel. For this reason the panel is angled and normally supplied with either a pole assembly or wall mounting bracket that can pivot to gain the best sunlight facing position. As these systems are mostly housed in polycarbonate enclosures with ventilation devices heat generated within the housing from the PV panel can be considerable.

In some cases it may be preferable to separate the PV panel from the battery and instrument enclosures. This is an uncommon request for typical applications but can be provided if required. In summary most alarm instruments with voltage free output contacts are ideally suited to be powered by solar energy, these could include most environmental control alarms or monitors from the Afriso Watchdog range and most level switches and probes currently available in the Afriso catalogue. We also offer an expanded range of instruments from other manufacturers to suit a variety of specific project applications.
