SHIPWRECKED • PIRATES WEEK 2019 | 2
The Pirates Week Festival is proud to partner with the Cayman Catboat Club and Cayman Maritime Heritage Foundation to showcase this year’s theme “Shipwrecked”. The 2019 mock “invasion” incorporates the Cayman Catboat with the aim to bring awareness to the historic and cultural value of the Catboat in our country’s history.
CATBOAT HISTORY It is believed the first Cayman Catboat was built in 1904 in Cayman Brac by a seaman named Daniel Jervis. Historical accounts state he designed the boat as a modern alternative to the weighty dugout canoes used by turtle fishermen. Jervis’ design features a one-sail wooden boat, crafted to be sharp at both ends to allow the boat to move swiftly through the water whether they are going backward or forward. No one really knows how the boat got its name, but some have said that the boat is so quietly agile it is likened to a cat silently hunting its prey. Up until the late 1940’s, Catboats were the main form of transport in the Cayman Islands and played a vital part of daily living, being the vessel that brought home the day’s catch, mail or acted as a water taxi between the far-reaching districts. The Catboat was also widely used in seafaring ventures being attached to the schooners that travelled between the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Florida, Cuba and Central and South America.
However, this is not the first time the Cayman Catboat Club will be featured in the National Festival. The Club has long been a part of the annual festivities, displaying the boats at District Heritage Days as well as offering sailing trips in and around the harbour during the festival season. We encourage spectators to take some time to speak with the Catboat sailors to learn how the traditional boat played an integral part of the islands’ history; our sailors may even take you for a ride! • The vessels were used to travel from district to district, move goods and to carry people to hospital in emergencies. • Menfolk took them out turtle fishing – which for many years was the mainstay of the islands’ economy – with the boats’ shallow, rounded shape ideal for hauling turtles over the side. • Catboats have, of course, been replaced by cars and trucks but nonetheless retain a special place in the hearts of Caymanians and are an integral part of Cayman’s maritime heritage. • Their beautiful, sleek design lends an air of nostalgia for a way of life that existed when Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman were truly “the islands that time forgot.” • However, since the boats have fallen into disuse and disrepair, the number of vessels has declined, and Cayman’s unique boat-building skills have all but disappeared. • In 1998 it was realized that action must be taken to stop catboats vanishing forever and so the Cayman Catboat Club was formed under the auspices of the Cayman Maritime Heritage Foundation. The Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman will also open their arms, inviting residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the unique Caymanian culture. In additional each district will have displays reflecting our collective history, while they also offer their own unique traditions and entertainment.
Starting off with a bang, the dramatic invasion of the pirates (including the kidnapping of the Governor!) will transform our beautiful islands into a vibrant mass of colour and parties. Until those pirates can be captured
I welcome you all to the warmth and excitement this week brings. Special thanks go to the organisers and people of Cayman who make this wonderful time possible.

THE PREMIER OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS
HON. ALDEN McLAUGHLIN, MBE, JP, MLA I welcome you to celebrate our largest and most magical national festival, Pirates Week. Whether you are a local, resident or a visitor, we want you to enjoy an experience like no other in the Caribbean. For many days you will be treated to parades, sporting events, competitions, street dances, music, food, drink and, lest I forget, pirates. Each year we kick off our high season for tourism with an invasion of swashbuckling pirates who come ashore in George Town, take over the harbour and capture the Governor. As the pirates begin their rule over the country, a colourful float parade will introduce you to our varied districts as Pirates Week committee members and supporters, as well as businesses, vie for the coveted prize of best float.
We also throw in a bit of our heritage with days dedicated to each of our districts – George Town, Bodden Town, East End, North Side, West Bay, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. I would encourage you to go to them all if you can. While we are part of one small country, our districts show our diversity. Come as you are or dress like a pirate. We’re glad you are on our shores to celebrate with us once again the landing and trial of the pirates. Have a good time and make some wonderful memories to take home and share.
Thank you for joining us. SHIPWRECKED • PIRATES WEEK 2019 | 5

“Official Airline of the Cayman Islands Pirates Week Festival”
caymanairways.com
Pirates Week was started in 1977 by the then Executive Council Member for Tourism, the Hon. James Bodden, as a vehicle to stimulate tourist arrivals during the off-season and designed to integrate tourism into the Caymanian community. Conceived from an idea to throw an event that would attract tourists to Cayman, Pirates Week has grown into the National Festival of the Cayman Islands. These days the festival is much more than a tourist attraction. To the generation that has grown up with Pirates Week it is almost like Christmas and something to look forward to each year. The Pirates Week National Festival is the biggest event on the calendar in the calendar in the Cayman Islands, attracting almost 35,000 patrons each year. It is a time of robust, fun-charged events and festivities for people of all ages. The festivities start off in Cayman Brac then move to Grand Cayman in mid-November, and close again in the sister island of Little Cayman. During the festival, the islands become a mass of colour and revelry! There are over 40 different events, spread over three weekends on all three islands. The most famous of the Pirates Week festivities is the Landing Pageant and Float Parade, which takes place in the capital of George Town in Grand Cayman. Thousands of spectators line the streets to watch a mock take-over of the island by a band of “fierce fighting pirates” who come ashore usually by way of a pirate ship at Hog Sty Bay! This is followed by a glittering parade, street dances, and fireworks. The first week in November erupts with fantasy fun beginning in the our sister islands, then the voyaging
pirates land in George Town on the 7th of November for plenty of pirate adventures full of activities, re-enactments of pirates invading, taking over the islands and joyfully gathering with locals and tourists to celebrate their “bounty”. During the District Heritage Days, (12th – 16th November) our elders come out to display their hand-made pieces of utilitarian art; pass down their skills, knowledge and traditions to the youth. The District Heritage Days are an important aspect of the Festival season as they showcase the culture of the Cayman Islands and the unique differences of each district and their communities. Visitors can enjoy watching as skilled artisans create traditional crafts; the sounds of Caribbean music by local and international entertainers, a District Heritage Days that showcase the Caymanian traditions and highlight the unique people and differences of each district and sister island. For the avid runner, swimmer or diver there is a 5K Walk/ Run, a Sea Swim and an Underwater Treasure Hunt and a Cardboard Boat Regatta to see which team can stay afloat the longest! For the animal lovers, you can watch or join in the fun at the Pirate Pooch Parade; and bring the little ones out to meet with the Las Tortugas and Bloody Bay Buccaneers and teenagers can enjoy the festivities with the “in crowd” at the Teen Up Street Dance for teens only! With all these events and song and costume competitions, music and of course delicious local island food and drinks! There is truly something for everyone at the Cayman Islands National Festival Pirates Week! SHIPWRECKED • PIRATES WEEK 2019 | 9

HERITAGE AYS D District
The Cayman Islands may be a mere speck in the vast oceans but that in no way diminishes our long and proud history. Our brave settlers were creative and developed unique methods of construction, preparing meals, making clothing and music to make it through centuries before trappings of our present modern-day civilization. District Heritage Days celebrate the talent and genius of our forebearers, keeping old skills alive and educating the current generation about the splendidly inventive past. Silver Thatch weaving is a unique island skill that has underpinned many of our receptacles, hats, clothing and other household items. Have you heard about our old-time fish fry? It is not just placing a snapper on a barbeque. There is a skill in setting the fire in the traditional outside kitchen known as a Caboose, creating the perfect temperature to cook the fish. Delicious sauces are prepared to accompany. Have a wander through each district and experience the aromas of traditional Cayman dishes like fried fish and fritters made with fresh homemade coconut oil. Enjoy the sweet treats, music and friendly atmosphere. You will be fascinated by the unique Caymanian dialect emanating from the lips of our elderly taking them back in time with stories of yesteryear and demonstrating the skills of rope making at the hands of master artists. Take a lazy drive up to East End to begin your experience by participating in the District Heritage Days. East End is famous for its food, desserts and for its handmade thatch art and turtle net making – a lost art as the laws of the island changed to accommodate green sea turtle conservation. Take a ride out to West Bay where you will be welcomed with joyful songs that make you want to dance and sing. You will be presented with proud displays of traditional food and arts.

Take a boat to North Side to the Water Cay Beach (next to Kaibo) where there will be plenty of fresh fruits, juices and local foods to taste, then relax by the water. You may even get the chance to take a ride on a Cayman Catboat! As you stroll through our country’s first capital, Bodden Town, famously called the “Birthplace of Democracy” in the Cayman Islands. Be sure to quench your taste buds with a traditional drink made from tamarind juice or take a refreshing break and stroll through the artefacts at the Nurse Josie’s Centre and learn about some of Cayman’s most prominent community leaders. Enjoy the finale of District Heritage Days in George Town, where you can watch the vigorous art of making homemade peppermint candy. See just what boat making tools Caymanian’s used to create some of the best seaworthy vessels in the Caribbean. And you can’t leave the street without snapping up some good home-made Conch or Whelk Stew or watching some of Cayman’s youngest residents demonstrate the rhythmic movement of the quadrille dance. It is a real treat to be able to connect with the past and gather with voyagers from all over the world all within Pirates Week’s legendary family-friendly atmosphere. We may be a small trio of peaks here in the centre of the Caribbean, but we have hearts as big as the universe and knowledge that has taken us o’er seas and home again.

P IRATES of the AYMAN SLANDS C I BLOODY BAY BUCCANEERS
The name Bloody Bay Buccaneers is an ode to the historic attack on the British fleet in Little Cayman by the Spanish Navy. The name is a way to tell the story of the Cayman Islands history. Two of the founders of the Bloody Bay Buccaneers have been a major part of Pirates Week since its inception in 1977.
Buccaneers with his “Gunner” Tibbetts at his side along with the rowdy crewe of swashbucklers who sail the high seas on the imaginary tall ship, “The Grim Reaper”.
LAS TORTUGAS PIRATES
This Caymanian pirate crew was formed by Darvin “Black Terrance” Ebanks, Robert “Widow Maker” Bodden, Duke “Big Cannon Jack” Tibbetts in 2013.
The Las Tortugas Pirates (LTP) is the family-oriented pirate crew of the Cayman Islands. Founded over 10 years ago by Orneil “Captain Wes” Galbraith, the Las Tortugas Pirates have become a mainstay of the festival.
Ebanks and Tibbetts continue to “invade” the local bars and hotels, and both men travel as tourism ambassadors promoting the National Festival in Florida, Honduras and as far away as Japan. Ebanks has moved on to “Captain” the Bloody Bay
The crew has grown over the years to include local and international “pirates” and touts more than four dozen members. The group’s revelry helps create a unique atmosphere for the Cayman Islands National Festival Pirate’s Week resulting in fun for the whole family.

APTAIN ACK PARROW
Although men like Bartholomew Roberts, Sam Bellamy and “Calico Jack” Rackham dominated the pirate world during the golden age of piracy, one name stands alone as history’s most famous pirate, Edward Teach better known as “Blackbeard”. Legend has it that, Captain Teach first set foot on the shores of Grand Cayman in late 1600s, and while partnered with Captain Benjamin Horingold, Blackbeard sailed to the Cayman Islands on several occasions. Around 300 years later, another famous pirate “Captain Jack Sparrow” began visiting the Cayman Islands, albeit famous for being a character in the Disney film franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
Actor, model and impersonator Sonny Charles plays the iconic “Captain Jack Sparrow”. This year’s visit to Grand Cayman marks 10 years “Captain Jack” will be attending the Pirates Week Festival. Mr. Charles holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater from the University of Florida and a love for acting on and off the screen. He helps run a live entertainment agency with his wife in Atlanta. With a passion for costuming, Sonny throws himself into his specialty characters for events and shows from start to finish. You can catch him at schools, District Heritage Days, the Children’s Fun Day and other special Pirates Week events throughout the festival. He is always ready to chat about his travels, pirate lore and will gladly pose for photos. SHIPWRECKED • PIRATES WEEK 2019 | 17

URTLE ELEASE Is Back
Once again, Pirates Week has partnered with the Cayman Turtle Centre, one of Cayman’s leading attraction for the annual Turtle Release. This tradition, spanning over 30 years, will be taking place at Governor’s Beach on Sunday, 10 November at 10:00am.
Residents and visitors can take the opportunity to witness this phenomenal occasion. A lucky few will get the chance to name and release a turtle into the water. It’s an exciting event that leaves you feeling good about your contribution to the conservation efforts of the Cayman Turtle Centre. Since the release programme started in 1980, the attraction has released over 30,000 turtles and this year promises to be an exciting continuation of this well-loved event that celebrates history and culture.
