TREO 1 MONTH PERSONAL PROJECT

Brief To design a product by associating products, words or scenarios. Story telling

PRODUCT INSPIRATION

A project based on storytelling about importance of trees.

Deforestation x Tissue Paper As a person who cares for the nature. I was inspired by the problem of deforestation to create a product. A product that can convey a story.

IDEATING AND ASSOCIATING

COMMUNICATING THE STORY

Exploring Possibilities. Using my Imagination to find a way to express the story, different ways of dispensing the tissue paper, thinking of ideas that capture the character and essence of the main idea well.

CONCEPT DIRECTION

I took a poetical design approach to arrive to the concept. Selected concept is a tissue paper holder. Here the core idea is that tissue paper acts as the “Trunk of the tree.

INTRODUCTION

FORM DERIVATION Form inspired from a tree.

TREO

I simplified the curves to give a cleaner and more subtle look to the product

Treo is a tissue paper holder which ‘stands’ for the trees. It tells a story.

THE STORY

TREO USAGE

Short scenario showing steps to use.

02

01

User takes the tissue paper.

As the tissue paper is kept being used.

It looks as if the tree is losing a part of itself.

We start to see Treo getting weaker (thinner). On th base tree lines start to show - emphasising the loss.

03

Treo falls. As if a tree was cut down. Treo aims a striking a thought in the user’s conscience - bring to notice the negative effects of excess use of paper.

TREO DETAILS

THE LINKS

MAKE-UP Being a simple product. Treo is made up of 3 components and a tissue paper roll.

01

A broken branch.

02 The Assembly. 01 Tree Head. 02 Tissue Paper Roll.

Tree stump and rings. I decided to keep the hidden details symbolic of real tree in order to create maximum resemblance to a real tree. This was to keep the experience natural and real.

UNDERSTANDING AND GETTING INSPIRED

INSPIRATION SOURCES We looked for inspiration in Indian Architecture, culture, fabrics and traditional wood working practices.

Understanding user habits and behaviours around day to day furniture use in an indian family with help of user-cycle maps.

THOUGHTS ON PAPER

We sketched initials ideas on A5’s. Ideas were around seating in case of gatherings, sharing your space with another, low-seating options (traditional indian seating).

Low-Seating one of the Key Inspirations

CONCEPT DIRECTION

3 distinct concepts based on indian values of sharing, welcoming and togetherness. Taking low-seating as a key consideration.

Chair concept direction in which chair would split in two to provide a seating space for another.

CONCEPTUALISING

Concised and combined ideas on floor seating, sharing space through chairs, tables, group seating arrangements.

Extendable-table, concept based on increasing space when guests arrive. Idea of “Welcoming”.

Shared seating concept, encouraging the idea of “togetherness”.

DEVELOPMENT

VISUALISATION AND REFINEMENT

Understanding seating posture and constraints for selected concept direction of chair.

Used 3-D medium to visualise the design, manage dimensions and proportions for the chair concept direction

Maping dimension for cloth-based suspended sitting.

We got the dimensions for a comfortable posture.

Introducing Antara, a range of Chairs inspired from indian values, architecture, culture and materials.

MANYA

MANYA

Chair Inspired by the value of and idea of harmony between two people. The look and feel of the chair was inspired from traditional indian materials of brass, tarkashi wood working, and rope work in certain indian furnitures.

MANYA

HARMONY The chair allows for itself to be split in two and providing space for the new person in the room. The idea is to make the person feel welcomed and therefore depicting harmony between the two individuals.

SANSA

SANSA

Sansa is a chair with a modern-twist to its contemporary look. It also carries the same sharing aspect of giving an extra seat. The brass details on the chair add a rich feel to it, because of other contrasting materials.

360 Movement

AARTH

SHADOW PLAY Aarth is inspired from the indian “jaali architecture design, the chair creates an interesting shadow-play pattern on the floor enhancing the aestheics of both the chair and the space it is in.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

It’s quite impressive and visually the catalogue is put together really well. I love the level of the renders, though there are some technical issues with some of the pieces, I am quite pleased with the way you translated most of your initial references into a complete designed product. You captured the Indian concepts in a very contemporary way and that is impressive. My favorite of the three are ‘Aarth’, but all three have very strong points that can be worked further to create a beautiful piece of furniture. - Kunaal Seolekar Designer/Owner, Studio Haus

MASTERCLASS (BIC)

CONCEPTS 1 WEEK MASTERCLASS ON FUTURE OF WRITING
