As per bhopal master plan 2031. The site surrounding consists mostly of residential plots, townships. While it shares a boundary with iiser on the west side. The presence of raja bhoj airport near the institute makes it a premium location in a city. This campus will offer both Undergraduate and Post graduate programmes in fashion technology through the courses of Fashion Design , Textile Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Technology and Management . the maximum strength of the students in institute will be approx 1000 students. The head of the institute will be the Director assisted with academic and administrative staffs. This institute will include Academic block, Administrative block , Hostel for both boys and Girls, workshop, Auditorium , Exibition Space, Resource Centre, Canteen, Different types of Faculty and staff quarter as per requirments. This institute covering all this department is to be built on a plot of 11 hectares . The site is irregular in shape longer side towards NorthSouth. This report has few case studies which are helpful for the completion if the project. These case studies of campus designs which included are NIFT Delhi , NID Bhopal , PEARL Academy Jaipur and NIFT chennai Institute which is mainly helpful to understand campus design. Case studies of student housings of IIM ahmedabad, GLA university , and IIT Ghandinagar, were also studied. all these case studies has helped in different way to understand the things and different elements of architecture and technology like Courtyard ,Connectivity , Circulation, Façade and jaalis, connection between open and closed spaces. The project aims to develop a design solution which tries to reinterpret the way institutes are designed in India, following a student-centric approach. It looks to design spaces that can relate the fields of fashion and architecture. The project also seeks to work on spaces that inspire people to design and instill an interest in their particular field of study, which in this case is fashion. The major challenge in the project was the topography of the land and the scale of the built mass that it had to accommodate. Zonings of the functions was done by creating corridors and spines so that the better utilization os space can happen and hierarchy of spaces according to the nature of spaces(In terms of public, semi-public and private) the concepts of the same have been applied to the design.

UNDERSTANDING OF FASHION AND CRAFTS CLUSTER IN BHOPAL

Fashion and Architecture have always shared a reciprocal relationship based on common visual and intellectual principles. Both produce environments defined through spatial awareness and create structure based on volumes, function, proportion and material. As a student of architecture, one wants to understand and create a design model that explores the connections between fashion and architecture. Additionally, NIFT is an institute that takes up the tasks of craft revival and in turn culture revival. Similar analogy exists in architecture field as well. The thesis will try to understand these analogies between these two fields and architecture.

AREAS OF RESEARCH

BUILDING ON SLOPE

About 1/3rd part of the proposed site of NIFT Bhopal have slope of gradient ranging from 1:20 to 1:8. Hence it is necessary to understand buildings design on site having slope.

UNDERSTANDING OF CAMPUS PLANNING

An integrated campus serves a variety of purposes and thus there is diversity of requirements which serve as a challenge while designing, while also providing the opportunity to understand how a large number of people can be handled over a large expanse of land.

DESIGNING ON SLOPES

Building on a sloping site offers many advantages. These advantages include opportunities for views and the capture of prevailing breezes. However building on a sloping site may require more site planning and design consideration to minimise the environmental, visual and amenity impact on neighbouring properties and surrounding landscape.

MATCHING BUILDING DESIGN TO SUIT THE DEGREE OF SLOPE

Building on a sloping site offers many advantages. These advantages include opportunities for views and the capture of prevailing breezes. However building on a sloping site may require more site planning and design consideration to minimise the environmental, visual and amenity impact on neighbouring properties and surrounding landscape.

MODERATE SLOPE

Single slab on ground construction is only suitable for a site slope up to seven per cent. Slopes between seven and 10 per cent, should accommodate some level change within the building footprint.

STEEP SLOPE

For slopes between 20 and 33 per cent, post and beam construction should be used which steps with the site. This may include a lower part level with a concrete slab. Single slab on ground construction should not be used.

FLAT TO SLIGHTLY SLOPING SITES

Single slab on ground construction is only suitable for a site slope up to seven per cent. Slopes between seven and 10 per cent, should accommodate some level change within the building footprint.

CUT AND FILL AS A SOLUTION

ADAPTING A BUILDING TO THE SLOPE OF SITE

IMPORTANT POINTS FOR BUILDING ON SLOPE DRAINAGE

• Reusing the on site earth

• Retaining wall implementation

• Earthworks needed

• Creation of space under slope

• Single slab on ground construction are only really appropriate up to a slope of seven percent as the cut/fill required becomes excessive (over one metre).

• On slopes between seven and 20 per cent think about stepping two or more slabs or using part slab/part post and beam construction to handle the slope.

UNDERSTANDING FASHION AND CRAFT

What is Fashion ?

The Oxford Dictionary defines fashion as: noun, a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour The word fashion comes from the Latin word “facio” which means ‘to make’ or ‘a particular make or shape’ (Brenninkmeyer, 1963). For centuries, people have suited their wardrobes to indicate their occupation, class, gender, locality and group affiliation. These differentiated social groups on their part influence fashion and this is why fashion is often called a ‘mirror of society’ (Unwin, 2003) Fashion is important to us because it is a means of self expression and culture is the primary influence on the type of clothing people wear. (Sproles & Burns,1994)

Fashion in India

Fashion implies creativity and time- an ever-changing phenomenon. Hence fashion design and display is essentially a theatrical setting with dramatic effects. In architectural terms- a spatial modulation of continuous movement in time and space, much like the ambience of an Indian bazaar where the drama of day to day life unfolds. The fashion design has stood ahead of several other design disciplines such as product design, etc. with respect to innovations and inventions using flexible and economic means. It demands creativity and flair of art together with the technical knowledge base vital to the masses. The fashion industry consists of four levels:

• The production of raw materials, principally fibres and textiles but also leather and fur;

• The production of fashion goods by designers, manufacturers, contractors, and others;

• Retail sales;

• Various forms of advertising and promotion.

MINA WORK:

KATOKI BEL:

MAKAISH:

This is thus called owing to its resemblance with enamel work. The embroidery is done in gold. This is a border pattern made of stiff canvas and the whole surface is filled with sequin edging. A variation of this border technique is lace made on net and filled with zari stitches and spangles. His is one of the oldest styles and is done with silver wire or badla. The wire itself serves as a needle, piercing the material to complete the stitches. A variety of designs are produced in this manner.

TILLA:

This is the kind of embroidery where gold thread is stitched on to the surface with a needle.

GOTAWORK:

The woven gold border is cut into various shapes to create a variety of textures in the patterns. In Bhopal the border of the material or sari is cut into shapes of birds, animals, and human figures, attached to the cloth, and covered with wires of silver and gold; it is surrounded by coloured silks. The work resembles enameling.

KINARI WORK:

A small variation is kinari work where the embellishments are done only at the edges in the form of tassels. This is done mainly by men and women of the Muslim community.

UNDERSTANDING OF CAMPUS PLANNING

IDEAL CAMPUS EXTRACTS FROM CAMPUS DESIGN IN INDIA BY

The campus is the physical environment created when buildings are constructed to allow the university idea to flourish . A university campus has been compared to a city on a small scale because it provides most of the needs for the university community unlike a city, however, the university is non commercial and primarily a place of study the campus, therefore ought to be a closely knit, unified cluster of buildings with intimate pedestrian open spaces providing a unique environment for living and studying it should ideally be a quiet, comfortable oasis apart from the normally buusy. noisy, consgested world. in this sense a campus should be more like a residential suburb or park than a city. it should not, however, be isolated from its surroundings. the university and the region in which it is situated will mututally benefit from proper interaction.

GROWTH AND CHANGE

Another important attribute of a campus is change. the university administrator seeks that degree of continuity and stability compatible with the progressive change required to maintain the institution’s leadership role. campus design must anticipate, as nearly as possible, the nature of probable growth and change. providing flexibility and indeterminancy, is perhaps the greatest challenge to the designer.

There are three main aspects to growth aspects to growth and change.

1. First is the overall growth or expansion of facilities caused by increasing enrollment.

2. Second is the differential growth that occurs in various areas of the university along with overall growth.

3. Third aspect is the internal flexibility required for changing uses of spaces and services., a kind of predesigned matrix or systems fabric that will insure order in future development, without being too restrictive.

SIZE

The ideal size for a university campus depends upon individual circumstances. the demands on the university, the location of the campus, the type of instruction, all influence the size. experience has shown that when an ultimate size was predetermined, the university often continued to grow beyond what was originally considered best. a major controlling factor is walking distance. Ten minutes from hostel to classroom is considered a maximum allowable walking distance . three to five minutes is optimum.

14 NIFT Bhopal

HUMAN NEEDS

In an ideal campus environment, regardless of size, classroom and living spaces should be related for the convenience of pedestrian occupants and closely linked to the qualities of the natural setting. since a campus is for people, it must be designed to measure of man himself, his physical dimensions, his senses, his habits, responses and impulses.

CONCEPT

• The Pearl Academy of Fashion, Jaipur is a campus which by virtue of its design is geared towards creating an environmentally responsive passive habitat.

• Institute creates interactive spaces for a highly creative student body to work in multifunctional zones which blend the indoors with outdoors seamlessly.

• The radical architecture of the institute emerges from a fusion of the rich traditional building knowledge bank and cutting edge contemporary architecture.

CLIMATE

• The adverse climate makes it a challenge to control the micro climate within the project thus incorporating various passive climate control methods becomes a necessity and also reduces the dependence on mechanical environmental control measures which are resource hungry. PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION

The arrival Plaza has an enhancing low height red wall leading both to the main circular entrance court and to the auditorium which has a welcoming entry guided by a chrome yellow wall. The entrance court again gives you the choice to proceed ahead taking either of the circulation paths depending on your reason to be there. the entrance flags off theopen to sky bridge these facts as nice over looking space.

CIRCULATION SOUND ANALYSIS RESPONSE TO CLIMATE

Vehicular movement in NIFT chennai is kept separated for academics and hostels. For academics vehicular access is kept in the front with parking facilities. For hostels vehicular access is given from south side which is only catering to hostels.

The site is abutting railway track on its west side and high traffic road on the other two sides. Hence the quiet area is identified as the inner portion of the site. Support areas such as toilet core, staff room, admin are located facing the NH to avoid noice pollution while the high insulating wall of the auditorium acts as buffer against train sound vibration. hostel block is zoned at the rear end of the site connected by means of an open corridor to the academic block.

The campus has been laid out that the building is separated by deep through fissures that serves as wind tunnels and light wells. The sea breeze makes its entry in places in the building, coming in through the narrow and tall gaps between the angular units on the seaward side of the building however, students complain of absence of proper cross ventilation in several classrooms. light floods into the heart of the building and bring a sense of layering by defining planes of varying light intensity. a heightened awareness of light, always a salient feature of sensitive architecture, is affected by a movement path that takes one through a progression of light and dark zones.

ZONING CONCEPT

Zoning of the campus guided with three factors

• Extreme contours on the site

• The segregation of public, student and private staff students.

• The creation of corridors /spines to control space utilization.

SITE ZONING

Site blocks have been oriented towards three blocks.

1. Creative spine

LEARNING SPINE (ACADEMIC BLOCK+ WORKSHOP+ LIBRARY)

The path from the administrative block to the library, located at the highest point on the site, is punctuated by an elaborate, stepped landscape, aesthetically and functionally accentuated by planters that double up as seating spots for the students as well as the faculties. The idea was to create spaces that rein force the students individuality by allowing for privacy, yet ensuring a feeling of openness, being Cocooned within a bigger space. Designed to create a feeling of grandeur, the elevation treatment

Attempts to break away from the traditional notions of design. A façade that clearly reflects the Triangular form inspired from the NID logo, coupled with the exterior of various zonal blocks that seamlessly integrates the columns, lends a sense of coherence and homogeneity to the overall design language.

JURY COMMENTS

The jury commended the way site planning was done to allow interactions across students and faculties of different departments within the larger umbrella of NIFT. Specially the way academic block was designed enabling students to cross interact with students of other departments of studies. They were quite impressed with the overall zoning of functions. however they suggested that initial iterations where the academic block was placed on the slopy side of site would have created designs like lutyens. but they were quite satisfied with the answers provided. The overall scheme seemed very logical to the jury members. they were very much impressed with the 3d views presented.
