HAUTE-COUTURE FALL 2014

THE PAST IS NEVER DEAD! Valentino was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, who themselves exalted all things classical. The goddess gowns on the runway were 21st-century interpretations of 19th-century interpretations of Roman togas. Donatella Versace and Giambattista Valli channeled the fifties. Raf Simons at Christian Dior leaped centuries from Marie-Antoinette 18th century dresses, to 20s volume to modern time. Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel merged baroque and brutalism.
