The New Interviews The Window! 26 February, 2014 No tweets found for @thenewbloggers By Demi Lee If you havenʼt heard about New Collegeʼs student-produced magazine, The Window, now is about time! I had the pleasure of interviewing the publicationʼs Editor-in-Chief, Karen Zhou, to discuss her work with the magazine.

——— Tell us a little bit about yourself! Hi New! Iʼm pursuing a double major in English Literature and Philosophy, though secretly want to be an astronomer. Iʼm pretty much interested in all art forms, whether itʼs painting, architecture, poetry, fashion, neo-classical music or figure skating. To be honest, I think anything can be art; you canʼt argue that [Roger] Federer, for instance, hasnʼt made tennis into an art form. Having such a wide array of interests gives me a supremely rich sensory experience, but on the other hand, I end up burning the midnight oil, getting lost on BrainPickings. In my spare time, I like to write poetry and sketch. Iʼm better versed in traditional media, like inks and acrylics, but Iʼd like to be better with a stylus too. I have an insatiable appetite for all things Charlie Chaplin, David Attenborough, Stephen Fry and Benedict Cumberbatch, a.k.a. The Brits.
Demi I’m in my final year at the University of Toronto studying neuroscience and psychology. I’m a hardcore commuter and try to always strike the right balance between all aspects of my life. Look out for blog posts on a range of topics, from matters of personal preference to writing style guidelines!
What are some of the challenges you face/have faced as the Editor-in-Chief of The Window? The biggest challenge has been creating an environment that encourages people to really say what they think, to get their ideas out in the open so that there is an authentic representation of student voices. When we were considering the transformation of The Window into a magazine, we thought about our readership (New College community) and tried to find a solution that would offer something unique to our audience. As a monthly publication, our intent is not to provide breaking news. Our aim is to 1) give voice to community perspectives and 2) act as a platform on which students can demonstrate their creativity. I went into the job with very high expectations of myself and the team, and Iʼm very proud of what we have achieved thus far in terms of the range and diversity of our content. It was a learning process for sure, but it was never not an exhilarating, inspiring experience. What do you envision The Window to be in the coming future? One of the things Iʼd really like to see happen is getting our website set up. We planned to launch it last fall but it was just impossible without a time-turner. So thatʼs the plan for this summer, to have an online home for our magazine so that those who commute or donʼt use Facebook can have access to the content. Having the magazine in a multimedia format also gives us more space and enables us to use that space innovatively. It also makes communication between the reader and the writers more direct and intimate.
Samia I’m in my second year and my interests lie in the human mind, body and everything in between and beyond. I love Harry Potter, hangouts, happiness, hope and a lot more words (some of which start with letters other than ‘h’). Join me as I interview the coolest Gnus around, learn to apply their techniques and explore New College. This year will be an exciting ride!
Is there anything youʼd like to add?

The Window is really the lovechild of creativity and dedication. Although I set the general theme for each month, itʼs really the writers and artists that generate the content, and itʼs the editors that help me produce a polished product every time. All of this was made possible by the sharing of a common objective, that of producing a publication that articulates a distinct and compelling vision from issue to issue. Itʼs been such a wonderful and fun experience for all of us. Also, if youʼre a writer, an artist, a web designer, a social media wiz, or youʼd like to be a part of The Window in any way, donʼt be shy and let us know! Hiring for the new academic year is fast approaching and official details will be available at the beginning of April on The Windowʼs Facebook page. ———
The March issue of The Window will be released on March 3 so be on the lookout for that! Thanks again, Karen Zhou, for taking the time to speak with me. P.S. Donʼt forget to like our Facebook page!
