100 years of SLS So there has been lots of anniversaries this year and maybe one of the most poignant to date was the realisation that it has been 100 years since World War l began. I remember when I was young there was still a generation of old people who could recount many sombre tales of their experience in not only the first but also the second World War. It seems somewhat crazy to realise that the product Sodium Laureth Sulpate (SLS) was born from these times of conflict. This product is so commonly used now it's in everything. It's in handwash, shower gel, shampoo, baby products, soap, the list is endless. But I wonder how many of us would be happy to continue to use it if we knew it's origins began with a German scientist trying to find a cost effective way to build bombs. Nitroglycerin has been around for over 130 years with it being one of the more practical explosives in comparison to gunpowder. During World War I large quantities were manufactured for the use of military propellants. Glycerin is a natural by-product in soap making (this is what makes the smooth slippery feel to soap) but wartime demand meant that a synthetic glycerin had to be engineered. Enter SLS. Sodium Laureth Sulphate was developed as an inexpensive detergent of industrial strength, and so the rest is history as they say. It is now present in almost all beauty products on the high street. If you read the ingredients of the products that you purchase you will find that right after Aqua is Sodium Laureth Sulphate or one of it's proteges which include Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES) or Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS). Needless to say that this chemically engineered product is not the most suitable to use to actually clean our bodies. Thousands of generations survived many years before SLS infiltrated our lives but now it seems that you can't escape from it! Then we look at the increase in skin conditions and skin related illnesses in the home and wonder how we could be affected in this uber clean society we have created. The truth is our bodies are too sensitive and too well engineered to endure this chemical onslaught. So, next time you pick up a bottle of something for your hair, your face or your children think about where the chemicals came from and their original purpose and consider whether it is what you want in your home?
