Experience Each year, the staff at RIC treats more than 2,400 persons with injuries, illnesses or congenital conditions that cause physical impairments. Studies show that patients do better when their doctors and staff have extensive experience with their specific conditions and treatments. This high volume directly translates into better outcomes for our patients.

It takes courage to set goals.

Science It takes commitment to reach those goals. Whether you are recovering from an injury, illness or surgery, or you are living with a long-term medical condition, you likely have concerns about the future. You are faced with uncertainty. And that can be frustrating and worrisome. But despite all of these unknowns, you are ready to move forward. You have a goal — you want to continue forward to pursue the best in life.

Rehabilitation starts with a goal. From the moment you enter the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, you are part of a team. The committed, passionate staff at RIC will assist you in building goals appropriate to your life and will be there with you every step of the way. We are eager to join your team in your return to your life’s passions.

RIC’s patient care is grounded in science. Research and scientific innovation result in the highest quality of care. The unique environment at RIC — where clinicians and scientists work side-by-side, where many researchers are clinicians — encourages research with direct benefits to our patients. We utilize the most advanced technologies and the best-supported practices so you can be sure your care is situated at the forefront of discovery.

Collaboration Our more than 50 years of rehabilitation experience has demonstrated that patients do best when everyone works together toward the same goal. That’s why we work closely with you and your loved ones; that’s why RIC’s care teams consist of members of several clinical disciplines working together to customize your treatment to your unique situation and goals. We place an emphasis on working with your family, physician and community partners to achieve the most comprehensive care available.

We are committed to your goals. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 RIC’s Advanced Patient Care Model 2 RIC’s Best Practices 4 What to Expect at RIC 6 Discharge 7 Conditions Treated & RIC’s Specialized Services 8 Medical Census & Outcomes

RIC’s Best Practices Our approach to providing you with the best available care Individual Care Developed to Fit Your Goals Every patient is unique. At RIC, experience guides our care decisions, but the goals you set with your care team dictate your personalized plan. When you arrive at RIC, you will build goals for rehabilitation with your team, discuss the progress you can expect to make during your stay and be involved in creating an individual treatment plan focused on restoring ability. With a plan in place, your care team will design a therapy program to fit your unique situation.

Integrated Medicine Delivered in a Team Approach Each RIC care team is led by a doctor and may include a host of clinicians including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, dieticians, patient care technicians and others. Not only do you benefit from each member’s individual expertise, but your treatment is addressed as a whole, often participating in several therapies for a common goal. For example, to address weakness in a limb, your team may decide a combined approach of physical and occupational therapy would be more effective than either one alone. The team regularly meets to discuss your progress, including successes and obstacles. Clinicians also work closely with RIC researchers to address your care with the most cutting-edge resources.

Leading Physicians Driving Your Care With more than 55 board-certified physiatrists (medical doctors with special training in rehabilitation), RIC has one of the largest physician practices in the nation focused on physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, RIC physicians specialize in many other areas including neurology, pediatrics, orthopaedic surgery, pain management, rheumatology and chiropractic medicine. RIC is an academic affiliate of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, housing its department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. All RIC physicians are on the faculty at Northwestern University; each year physicians from around the world come to RIC to learn from our doctors, who are creating the latest advances in rehabilitation medicine and therapy.

97% of our patients say they are satisfied with the care they’ve received and would recommend RIC to friends or family.

Cutting-Edge Research Advances Your Care Meet Jorge Alfaro, a peer mentor and athlete. Visit www.ric.org/prevail to read his story.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago has been ranked “#1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S.News and World Report every year since 1991.

RIC is home to the world’s largest research center dedicated to physical medicine and rehabilitation, with more than 300 active research studies underway. The dynamic relationship between RIC clinicians and scientists fosters focused research developed in response to patients’ needs and, in turn, results in discoveries and innovations that benefit you. This research is conducted with applications to clinical care always in mind. Recent technologies developed through the collaborration of RIC scientists and clinicians, and being used at RIC, include:

The Most Progressive Continuum of Care RIC offers care to ensure your transition from inpatient rehabilitation to the next phase of your life is as smooth as possible while building on the progress you have made during your inpatient stay for intensive therapy. Day rehabilitation is specifically for those who no longer need inpatient hospitalization but need multiple intensive therapies and continued monitoring by a physician. Outpatient rehabilitation is appropriate for those who need only one or two therapies. RIC physicians also are available for consultation through our physician practice services. Your team will help you decide which setting is most appropriate for your continued rehabilitation program

A Motivating Environment From the positive attitudes of our staff to the brightly colored units and quiet views of Lake Michigan, RIC is designed as more than just a place to administer treatment — it’s a place to reflect on your goals and continue thriving in life.

What to Expect at RIC Pre-Admission & Admission Before you are admitted to RIC, you will be evaluated to make sure you are capable of engaging in therapy. In addition, our intake coordinators will assist with your financial authorization. Once you are admitted, your RIC physician will perform a comprehensive physical examination as the first step in planning a detailed treatment plan.

A look Inside RIC’s Inpatient Hospital

.

Rehabilitation is challenging work. That’s why it’s important to be in an environment that is set up with your success in mind.

Meet Mina Fuller, a Chicago police officer. Visit www.ric.org/thrive to read her story.

RIC is dedicated entirely to physical medicine and rehabilitation. The hospital itself is designed to aid in therapy. Vibrant colors keep the mood lively. Framed pictures and photos on the walls make it feel a bit more like home. Views of Lake Michigan inspire reflection and quiet. Patients can assess the turning radius of their wheelchair by the large circle near the nursing stations, or gauge their endurance by the evenly-spaced marks in the hallways.

Welcome and Settling In Upon being admitted, you will be welcomed, and our staff will bring you to your room, help you settle in to your surroundings and make sure you are comfortable. The medical staff for each program is made up of specialists in their disciplines. You’ll always be in the care of professionals trained to provide the most effective treatment for your specific condition.

A Typical Day at RIC

Family Involvement Family involvement is an integral part of rehabilitation. In addition to being a major motivator, family involvement ensures skills learned in therapy are continued in your daily routine. Family members also may be asked to assist in exercises. When family members feel confident assisting with care, it is profoundly reassuring for both you and your family to know you can begin to operate independent of your therapists. Additionally, we understand that physical impairment affects the entire family. We engage family members in both therapy and emotional support, which could include counseling and support groups. RIC has staff dedicated to answering your and your family’s tough questions and helping you transition to the next phase of your life.

Immersed in Community Because RIC is one of the largest free-standing rehabilitation hospitals in the world with inpatient programs dedicated to many conditions, you will find invaluable support interacting with other patients with similar conditions. This community at RIC builds relationships between patients, sharing feelings and questions about challenges you face with people who really understand. 4

What To Bring With You You should bring clothing and shoes that will allow you to feel comfortable and move easily. You should also bring anything that will make you feel

As you wake up and have breakfast, you’ll want to check your therapy schedule for the day, provided the night before. Then you’re off to one or two therapy sessions. Afterwards, you’ll have time to rest. Depending on your condition, you may have a session of therapy or treatment with an expert in pain management. Perhaps, while eating lunch, you’ll be joined by a family member who will attend your next therapy session with you. Following your afternoon therapy, you’ll have time to read, nap or listen to music. After dinner, you may spend the evening with visitors or other patients in recreational therapy. Then it’s time for a relaxing bath or shower (provided every other evening). At RIC, nighttime interruptions are minimized, so you will feel rested for the next day’s activities.

There is a therapy gym on every patient floor, accessible bathrooms in every patient room and specialized equipment that allows you to fully participate in therapy sessions. You will get to socialize at a variety of recreational therapy programs offered throughout the week such as arts and crafts, music therapy, and games and activities. To prepare you for your transition home, we have an apartment to practice your skills — such as cooking or vacuuming — in a home setting. For qualified patients, there is also an option to stay overnight in the apartment to develop your skills and build your level of comfort — all with the supervision of a member of your care team. Similarly we have the body of a real car so you can practice getting in and out.

more at home such as books, photos, cards and movies. Children and teenagers often want to bring music, stuffed animals, dolls, toys, video games and their schoolbooks. We have a schoolroom on-site with a dedicated Chicago Board of Education teacher so students can keep up with their education.

Discharge A Sample of Conditions We Treat in Adult and Pediatric Inpatient Care

Returning to Your Daily Life

Follow-up Care and Treatment

During your entire stay, we are focused on preparing you to rejoin the community, and we do everything we can to make the transition a successful one. By the time you are discharged, you and your family will have the training and confidence to manage your medical care. In addition, members of your RIC team will prepare you to meet challenges in an everyday setting.

Before the end of your inpatient stay, your RIC doctor may recommend continued therapy at one of RIC’s many local clinics. You may be referred to an RIC DayRehabCenter to continue receiving multiple, coordinated therapies and continued physician oversight with the benefit of returning home each evening. Or you may make the transition to an RIC Outpatient Center for one or two continued therapies. All patients receive a follow-up evaluation with their RIC physicians following discharge.

Toward the end of your time at RIC, your day may include field trips and practical experience outside the hospital. A patient who uses a wheelchair, for example, may go with his or her therapist to a supermarket to practice maneuvering through aisles and among streets and curbs along the way. When appropriate, a therapist may visit your home, school or workplace to assess what might present problems and suggest ways to make your return to everyday life easier. We also can work to prepare people at your school or workplace for your return.
