biography Passionate about music and movies since childhood, Karen grew up in a middle city of Brazil where she spent her hole adolescence. When she was 15 she decided that Architecture would be the right profession. Arts and helping people always were something she cared about. So in her undergraduated studies she found out what she needed: challenges that estimulate her creativity and that would make people’s life better. She joined the Federal University of Viçosa in 2012, which is a very well-known university. Within this environment and on the same year she was chosen by the Program of Young Talents for Science to develop, together with her colleagues, an academic research project about the technologies present in the classrooms at her university. Always trying to do a great work, she usually demonstrate her leadership sharing experiences and design skills. She likes to explore each matterials as it looks, especially the concrete.

ecumenic temple 1
The proposal of a place where spiritual contemplation can take place regardless of the individuals believes is the main idea behind this ecumenic temple. Based on that, a symbol of pureness was chosen to represent peace in a local which requires it. From an ideal of crystal was abstracted some geometric forms like triangles and diamonds wrought symmetrically with the intention to find harmony. Restricting the openings to a single pyramid glass on top, the temple has achieved an interesting effect of zenithal lighing that can be enjoyed during all day.

DAYCARE CENTER- 3rd semester, 2013
tutors: Ă?talo Stephan and Paulo Tadeu Arantes autors: Karen Guedes and Guilherme Scardini
daycare center Inspired by a children’s literature classic “Where The Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, this daycare center was designed to create a whole dreamworld environment which the kids could relate to, making the everyday school routine funnier. In this way, the classrooms were designed to remind little monsters. The “ears” are zenital lighting openings and the windows of different standards help to give the classrooms a funny out-of-the-box, childish look. The patio coverage, in its turn, used hyperbolic parabloids like Félix Candela’s “umbrellas”, in order to remind the forest of Sendak’s book. Furthermore, the entrance hall counts with a corridor with skylights, modeled irregurlaly, to remind Max’s boat trip, the main character of the book. Opposite to the child’s world, there is the adult world, made by two racional blocks where are located the administrative and service sectors.

In a land which endended in a river, a ten-floor building was the original proposal. Located in a street which is either residential and comercial, the Bookstore Building counts with a trade that was missing in the area to the parameters of the city: a large bookstore. Without a pool or a playground and with lots of green squares areas, retirees and the old costumers was the main audience that was wanted to attend. The design of the building was planned with normal 200 m2 apartments and duplexes above them so all the residents could have the best view: the street. APPARENT MATERIALS

daylighting model ZENITAL SKYLIGHT
In this work the intention was to develop the daylighting design inside an environment built inside a shoebox. As the proposal wasn't to hold to the likehood (num intindi o que ela falou), an aquarium was chosen as a model. It was intent to separate the two main spaces, the entrance hall and the aquarium room. In the first one, a higher amount of light was used to make the environment more inviting through an entire wall of cobogo. While in the second space the illumination was indirect and less abundant defined by two small windows wave-shaped and one skylight above the aquarium to create ambience between people and the animals.
