The Chicago Chapter (CWCA) of the National Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) was founded in 1973 – one year after WCA.
CWCA is committed to support women in the arts.
The Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art (CWCA) represents and works to advance the concerns of women artists, art historians and museum professionals. Its goals are consistent with the policies of the National Women’s
50 years ago CWCA played a role in fighting for women’s rights, changing the exhibition landscape in Chicago and beyond. Ironically, today’s political climate once again threatens women’s rights in ways so
it has inspired us at CWCA to partner with various art groups to bring “absurdity” exhibitions to the greater Chicago community. In this way CWCA continues its 50year history of advancing women’s opportunities to develop creative solutions in the greater Chicago community.

Helene Smith-Romer
Remembering past CWCA member and board member Helene Smith-Romer, (1948-2022), who inspired the exhibition Absurdity,InDadaWeTrust.
Helene Smith-Romer, a self-proclaimed DADAIST began her Dadaist and surrealist art career at 30. Below are a few images from her CWCA “stellar” presentation a few years ago.

Absurdity, In Dada We Trust.
A Festival of Absurdity in a World Gone Mad
Created in partnership between the Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art at Stola Contemporary Art and The Art Center Highland Park
Racism and extremist nationalism are empowered and bullies are applauded. Women’s rights are being set back by 50 years, and the freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community are dangling by a thread as individual rights are regulated but assault weapons are not. Social media has highjacked the news and ‘alternate set of facts’ have become the norm, no longer just the brunt of jokes. The world is witnessing a new rise of insanity.
For artists, it’s a clear call to look to the past for guidance and take a stand. How? In a word: DADA. Dadaism was a movement with explicitly political overtones a reaction to the senselessness of WWI. It essentially declared war against war, countering the absurdity of the establishment's descent into chaos with its own kind of nonsense.
Inspired by Helene Smith Romer, CWCA member and self-proclaimed DADAIST, The Art Center Highland Park and the Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art built a coalition to fight against the current trend toward insanity. Understanding that the original shock of the Dada Movement could not be replicated, the theme was broadened to include the concept of Absurdity.
We live in a divided world, a divided country, and a divided city. Therefore, the collaboration set out to combine our efforts by inviting other art institutions, theatre companies, filmmakers, dance companies, writers, musicians, and creatives to participate in our cooperative movement/exhibit, Absurdity: In Dada We Trust.
Our mission is to unite Chicago and the surrounding cities through a common exhibition theme, bring arts organizations together, and strengthen our coalition, connections, and community. This event is more than an exhibition but rather it is an ongoing movement with art centers and galleries taking on the theme with differing iterations, curating their spaces how they see fit, from selected artists to call for entry exhibitions.
Confirmed participants include: Woman Made Gallery, Oliva Gallery, Beverly Art Center, 116Gallery, and AIR Studio + Gallery More are welcome to join in our goal of empowering the arts to bring our communities together!

Featured Artist for Absurdity,InDadaWeTrust at The Art Center Highland Park
BIOGRAPHY:
Sally Edelstein is an award-winning N.Y. collage artist and writer who considers herself a visual archeologist digging deep into American mythology, excavating and examining the social fictions we and society tell ourselves over the past 70 years. An incurable collector of vintage ephemera, she utilizes imagery found in her collection for her hand-cut collages, drawing heavily on popular culture from the 50s to the 70s and how it both informs our identities and fragments it. A nationally exhibited artist who received her BFA from School of Visual Arts, her work has been shown at Arlington Art Museum, Museum of Sonoma County, Brown University and Heckscher Museum of Art. Told through both text and illustration her blog EnvisioningtheAmericanDream probes the ways that advertising and media steer our perceptions of race, class and gender. She currently resides in Huntington, N.Y.
ABSURDITY STATEMENT:
It seemed implausible but once again Donald Trump and his delusional thinking were dominating the news and national discourse as I prepared for my second art show at The Art Center Highland Park in 2023. The last time I was in an exhibit here in 2017 I wore a Hillary Clinton white pants suit to the opening in protest to Trumps inauguration.
With the Absurdity exhibit there is not a more apt title for the times we have been living in. A world defined by absurdity has left us depleted, depleting democracy in its wake.
If my work revolves around addressing the social fictions and myths that our society perpetuates there has been no greater spinner of tales than Trump. When it comes to dark fairy tales, he puts the Grimm Brothers to shame. As reckless as ever he continues to disseminate disinformation creating chaos.
Like DADA that makes a mockery of middle class materialism and nationalistic attitudes my work has always been a satirical critique of our consumer and political culture.
We are living in absurd times. Thinking the unthinkable is no longer unthinkable. It is reality. No one is immune. No one is safe.
