PROBLEM STATEMENT

THESIS STATEMENT

Today, the idea that education happens only within the four walls of a classroom is an outdated concept. The majority of classrooms in use today were built for traditional, “stand-and-deliver, sit-and-listen” pedagogies in a passive learning setting. According to the architect and expert in education, Frank Locker states in 2015 to the newspaper “El Tiempo” that the prevailing model of schools infrastructure responds to the same logic of prison: rows of closed-door classrooms, long double-loaded corridors, entry’s and controlled exits, high perimeter fences and bells that indicates the start and end times of classes. This logic has led to education has become an impersonal model that in turn has contributed to the problem of school dropouts and others, such as mental health, isolation, and violence.

The thesis attempted to demonstrate that currently classrooms and educational buildings are designed with the same concept and layout that was implemented many years ago which does not create or promote a positive environment for students on the pursuit of knowledge. The proposed design try to undo the compartmentalization found in traditional schools, re-imagining education by interweaving learning with creative spaces. This projected derived as a response to change the existing model of schools and proposed a different alternative design that could help students to learn in a well-equipped and sustainable environment to embrace their creativity and originality.

As mobility starts to evolve in San Diego, this project has a variety of transit mediums available.Within walking distance are bus lines, light rail lines, cycle tracks, and interstate train stops that promote sustainable commuting.

02. THE POP-UP BLOCK

With the trend for co-living continuing to pick up speed, “The Pop-up Block “ will transform an old block into a communal housing development combining living, culture, work and retail located in National City, San Diego ,CA.

National City, San Diego.

KAREN LINIADO

Coliving isn’t just another lifestyle trend, it’s the common sense way to live in a city. Thoughtfully designed shared layouts make our members happier, and encourage them to see their space as more than just a crash pad, but rather, a true home. There’s a Know Your Neighbor effect in The Pop Up block homes that stems from my considered approach to design. The buildings value friendliness over anonymity, and that’s reflected in our every colorful facades. The methodology is to design for community and convenience, In our homes, that translates to sunny living rooms, chic furnishings, and shared spaces you want to be in, ready-made for your move.
