our aspirations and vision for the future. I believe that it is important to have a journal which gives free access to its contents and promotes highquality research and intellectual output of scientists who have limited access to main stream journals. We aim to bridge the gap so that authors get a wider audience for their high-quality scientific achievements. This is particularly true for scientists whose first language is not English. Thus we will work in partnership with such authors to ensure that their research is made freely available to the wider scientific community. I believe we

LUCA DOTTI “I don’t understand why people see me as beautiful.”

He remembers that aging never scared Hepburn. “She was always a little bit surprised by the efforts women made to look young,” Dotti recalls. “She was actually very happy about growing older because it meant more time for herself, more time for her family, and separation from the frenzy of youth and beauty that is Hollywood. She was very strict about everybody’s time in life.” Though, adds Dotti, “The only big regret I have, and she would have had, is not knowing her grandchildren. Because she would have been a fantastic grandmother— cooking cakes, keeping the grandchildren on every occasion, and telling them stories.”

“She didn’t live a life secluded or behind bars; she would walk around and everybody knew her. She was part of the city. The majority of these photos are in the streets,” Audrey Hepburn’s son Luca Dotti tells Vanity Fair’s Laura Jacobs about the time his mother spent in Rome. To prepare for his new book Audrey in Rome, Dotti gathered some 2,500 photos from the archives of the Reporters Associati that capture his mother throughout the Eternal City. Dotti says what struck him the most was that “even in these candid shots she was always herself—perfect.” Reflecting on his mother’s signature style, evidenced in many of the images in the

book, Dotti remembers that scarves were her vice. “Well, it wasn’t like Imelda Marcos and shoes,” he says. “She had, like every woman, maybe 30 or 40. It was a good way to be in disguise, big sunglasses and a scarf. Occasionally she was able to do her shopping without having all the crowds behind.” Hepburn’s iconic look was, according to her son, what she thought of as “a good mixture of defects.” Dotti explains, “She thought she had a big nose and big feet, and she was too skinny and not enough breast. She would look in the mirror and say, ‘I don’t understand why people see me as beautiful.’ ”

Included in the Sundance changes made in 2010, a new programming category titled “NEXT” (often denoted simply by the characters “<=>”, which mean “less is greater than”) was introduced to showcase innovative films that are able to transcend the confines of an independent budget. Another recent addition was the Sundance Film Festival USA program, in which eight of the festival’s films are shown in eight different theaters around the United States.

Finally, the Apple iPad review. The name iPad is a killing word -- more than a product -- it’s a statement, an idea, and potentially a prime mover in the world of consumer electronics. Before iPad it was called the Apple Tablet, the Slate, Canvas, and a handful of other guesses -- but what was little more than rumor and speculation for nearly ten years is now very much a reality. Announced on January 27th to a middling response, Apple has been readying itself for what could be the most significant product launch in its history; the making (or breaking) of an entirely new class of computer for the company. The iPad is something in between its monumental iPhone and wildly successful MacBook line -- a usurper to

the netbook throne, and possibly a sign of things to come for the entire personal computer market... if Apple delivers on its promises. And those are some big promises; the company has been tossing around words like “magical” and “revolutionary” to describe what many have dismissed as nothing more than a larger version of its iPod touch. But is that all there is to this device? Is the hope that Apple promises for this new computing experience nothing more than marketing fluff and strategic hyperbole? Or is this a different beast altogether -- a true sign that change has come to the world of the PC? We have the definitive answers to those questions (and many more) right here, so read on for our full review of the Apple iPad!

ASHTON TAKES ON THE ROLL OF STEVE JOBS This undated publicity photo released by the Sundance Institute shows Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs in the film, “jOBS,” directed by Joshua Michael Stern. The Sundance Film Festival begins Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, in Park City, Utah. This year’s lineup of 119 feature films includes, Ashton Kutcher as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in director Joshua Michael Stern’s film biography jOBS; Amanda Seyfried as porn star Linda Lovelace in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Lovelace; Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg in John Krokidas’ beatpoet story Kill Your Darlings; and Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, a follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, among others. (AP Photo/Sundance Institute, Glen Wilson) (Credit: AP) PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — It’s that time of year again when a tiny ski-resort town becomes the place to be for anyone in show business — stars and directors, distribution executives, musicians, unknown filmmakers hoping that people might want to hear the stories they tell. Opening Thursday, the Sundance Film Festival takes over Park City for a week and a half every January. Anything resembling a

theater is booked with screenings. Directors and their casts trudge snowy streets to introduce films and do interviews. Bars and restaurants are stuffed with people talking deals, or just talking about something crazy or unexpected they just saw on screen. “It’s almost like Burning Man. Once a year, this tiny little town that then transforms itself into kind of a crazy film city for 10 days out of the year,” said writer-director Lynn Shelton, a Sundance regular (“Humpday,” ”Your Sister’s Sister”) who returns this year with “Touchy Feely,” starring Rosemarie DeWitt as a massage therapist suddenly struck by an aversion to touching others. “It’s crammed with people all there for one reason. Whatever relationship they have to the industry, they’re all there for the love of films.” The top U.S. showcase for independent cinema, Sundance has grown along with the do-it-yourself film world and has played a huge role in creating opportunities for low-budget filmmakers to get their work made and seen.

dONT BE AFRAID OF THE EXPERIENCE The Sundance Film Festival, a program of the Sundance Institute, is an American film festival that takes place annually in Utah. With 46,731 attendees in 2012, it is one of the largest independent film festivals in the United States.[1] Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as at the Sundance Resort, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The festival comprises competitive sections for American and international dramatic and documentary films, both feature-length films and short films, and a group of out-of-competition sections, including NEXT, New Frontier, Spotlight, and Park City At Midnight. The 2013 Sundance Film Festival was held on January 17 to January 27, 2013. Utah/US Film Festival [edit] Sundance began in Salt Lake City in August 1978, as the Utah/US Film Festival in an effort to attract more filmmakers to Utah. It was founded by Sterling Van Wagenen (then head of Wildwood, Robert Redford’s company), John Earle, and Cirina Hampton Catania (both serving on the Utah Film Commission at the time). The 1978 festival featured films such as Deliverance, A Streetcar Named Desire, Midnight Cowboy, Mean Streets, and The Sweet Smell of Success. [2] With chairperson Robert Redford, and the help of Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson, the goal of the festival was to showcase strictly American-made films, highlight the potential of independent film, and to increase visibility for filmmaking in Utah. At the time, the main focus

“by a mile the best film festival in the world everyone should try it before dying a hundred percent” Rupert sanders

SHOWCASES THE BEST TALENT FILWISE

The festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies not affiliated with Sundance. Festival organizers have tried curbing these activities in recent years, beginning in 2007 with their ongoing Focus On Film campaign.

of the event was to conduct a competition for independent American films, present a series of retrospective films and filmmaker panel discussions, and to celebrate the Frank Capra Award. The festival also highlighted the work of regional filmmakers who worked outside the Hollywood system. The jury of the 1978 festival was headed by Gary Allison, and included Verna Fields, Linwood G. Dunn, Katharine Ross, Charles E. Sellier Jr., Mark Rydell, and Anthea Sylbert. In 1979, Sterling Van Wagenen left to head up the first-year pilot program of what was to become the Sundance Institute, and Cirina Hampton Catania took over as executive director of the festival. More than 60 films were screened at the festival that year, and panels featured many well-known Hollywood filmmakers. Also that year, the first Frank Capra Award went to Jimmy Stewart. The festival also made a profit for the first time. In 1980, Catania left the festival to pursue a production career in Hollywood. Several factors helped propel the growth of Utah/US Film Festival. First was the involvement of actor and Utah resident Robert Redford, who became the festival’s inaugural chairman. By having Redford’s name associated with the festival, it received great attention. Secondly, the country was hungry for more venues that would celebrate American-made films as the only other festival doing so at the time was the USA Film Festival in Dallas

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Iron Man Holds Off Strong Gatsby Debut And Sells It Off.

Tony stark may be polished and smart but he is hiding a very powerful bad energy within.

What went right and wrong with Iron Man. This weekend, superhero love kept Iron Man 3 in the number one spot for a second weekend in a row while the lavish period saga The Great Gatsby overperformed in second place offering effective counter-programming. It was the first time in nearly a year that two films did over $50M in business over the same frame. Audiences still came out in droves for Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3 which fell an understandable 58% in its second frame to an estimated $72.5M holding steady at number one. That brought the amazing cume to a stunning $284.9M for Disney. The decline was not as good as the 50% of The Avengers from last year, however it was about even with the 59% of Iron Man 2 from 2010. Those sophomore weekends were $103.1M and $52M, respectively so the Mandarin pic’s gross fell right in the middle. For a super hero threequel coming off a gargantuan opening weekend, it was a good hold. The average was a terrific $17,040 from 4,253 sites. Iron Man 3 is now just days away from joining the list of All-Time Domestic Blockbusters and could be on course to finish in the neighborhood of $425M. Overseas, Iron Man brought in another hefty sum collecting an estimated $89.3M in its third round to raise the international total to $664.1M and the worldwide haul to an eye-popping $949M. Compared to Avengers which had mostly the same release pattern a year ago, the Marvel sequel now stands 6% ahead in overseas grosses but 5%

behind in global sales thanks to the domestic difference. Avengers broke the billion dollar mark at the end of its third frame, but the fact that Iron Man 3 is in the same vicinity at all is nothing short of amazing since the super hero assembly went on to become the third highestgrossing blockbuster in history. Leading the way for Iron Man 3 overseas is still China with $95.3M followed by Korea’s $54.1M, and the United Kingdom’s $48.3M. Opening with spectacular results in second place was the lavish 1920s-set saga The Great Gatsby with an estimated $51.1M from 3,535 theaters for a sizzling $14,460 average, beating industry expectations in the process. Based on the classic American novel, the PG-13 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan played as effective female-skewing counter-programming to the male-skewing Iron Man sequel. Studio research showed that the Gatsby audience was 59% female and 69% over the age of 25. Reviews were mixed with many top critics panning it, however moviegoers came out for the brand, the starpower, and the style. Plus music from executive producer Jay Z and other current artists helped to broaden the appeal. Michael Bay’s pet project Pain & Gain followed with an estimated $5M in its third round dipping 33%. Paramount has collected $41.6M thus far. Were not fooled. Reviews were generally negative and the B- CinemaScore means word of mouth is lukewarm so don’t look for legs here. The period baseball flick 42 dipped 23% to an estimated $4.7M for Warner Bros. pushing the sum up to $84.7M. Next up was Tom Cruise’s sc-fi pic Oblivion with an estimated $3.9M, down 31%, and a cume of $81.7M for Universal.

“to all of those who dont know we survived the hurricane of movies and still came up top without question”

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? (c) Disney They say that clothes make the man, but what’s made the Iron Man franchise consistently rewarding is the man inside the suit; Robert Downey, Jr. is Tony Stark, perhaps the wittiest and coolest superhero alter-ego in contemporary cinema. The critics say Downey is in fine form in Iron Man 3, and director Shane Black (mostly) maintains the series’ tricky balance between spectacle and light comedy while serving up a few intriguing tweaks to the formula. Tony Stark is still recovering from the events of The Avengers, while leaving the management of Stark International to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Pepper is approached by

an old colleague of Tony’s about a new organic technology, but will it be a blessing or a curse -- and how will Iron Man respond to threats from a ruthless terrorist? The pundits say the Certified Fresh Iron Man 3 is a sharp, entertaining adventure and a strong addition to the Marvel canon. (Check out this week’s Total Recall for a countdown of Downey’s bestreviewed movies and 24 Frames for a gallery of notable part IIIs.) Either way, Dropping a mere 14% to an estimated $3.6M was the animated hit The Croods which has given Fox a robust $173.2M to date. Lionsgate’s recent flop The Big Wedding grossed an estimated $2.5M, down 36%, for a weak $18.3M cume to date. The Matthew McConaugheyReese Witherspoon indie drama Mud expanded from to 854 theaters and held up well with an estimated $2.3M this weekend, up 8%. Rounding out the top ten was Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful which dropped 62% to an estimated $802,000 lifting the stellar total to $230M. The top ten films grossed an estimated $151.2M which was down 5% from last year when The Avengers remained at number one with $103.1M
