The great conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein gave one of his books the title The Infinite Variety of Music. I am reminded of this phrase whenever I look through an issue of the Eastman School’s concert guide, Encore. The pages of this guide illustrate the variety of musical delights in store for you this fall semester, whatever your musical tastes may be. Among the infinite variety of Eastman performances you can hear in the next few months are: • Unique collaborations among Eastman faculty instrumentalists, singers, and composers • Guest artists like the great chamber musicians featured in our beloved Kilbourn and Ranlet series, and exciting entertainers like Broadway’s Jason Alexander • Masterpieces from the choral and operatic repertoire • Outstanding student ensembles: chamber groups, studio ensembles, wind ensembles, and symphony orchestras • Big-band jazz and intimate combos in our new Jazz Café • Early music and contemporary music performed expertly and passionately We invite you to come and experience the infinite variety of music on Eastman’s stages.

Albert Herring (1947) is unique among Benjamin Britten’s operas: it’s a rollicking comedy and a pointed satire of British small-town attitudes. When the inhabitants of Loxford cannot find a sufficiently virtuous young lady to be their May Queen the honor is given to the young, naïve grocer Albert Herring—who then sets out to lose his virtue, to the town’s embarrassment. Albert Herring begins an exciting Eastman Opera Theatre season which also includes a studio production of a double bill by Poulenc and Menotti and ends with Ned Rorem’s Our Town, which premiered in 2006 and immediately became a classic of contemporary American opera.
