ECISA takes part in the construction of the 150km high-speed railway line between Cordoba and Malaga

Adif puts its trust once more into the construction company after the recent completion of engineering works at Logro単o Train Station

The Administrator of Railway Infrastructure (Adif), a state-owned body that answers to the Department of Public Works, has awarded the construction unit belonging to the ECISA Group with the contract for infrastructure improvement works on a 150-km highspeed train line between Cordoba and Malaga, with a value of 23 million euros.

2 JUNE 2010

The scheduled works aim to correct the inefficiencies that have so far been detected since the high-speed railway line came into service. These works are set to improve access to infrastructure of the high-speed track in order to carry out maintenance works, and make the current infrastructure more durable. The main works to be carried out include the following: • Service roads. The building of new service roads and improvements to existing ones. • Construction of fencing along the railway line. Extension of existing fencing into areas where there wasn’t any previously or in those where it will be necessary to remove fencing in order to carry out such work. • Cleaning of ditches, and removal of any obstacles that prevent the water from freely draining away. • Putting up of rabbit wire. Putting up wires at a large number of slopes is necessary in order to prevent the proliferation of burrows, which can lessen the operational capacity of the rail platform.

Completion of Logroño’s provisional train station With a budget of 2,175,000 euros, this new passenger building attempts to reconcile the temporary nature of the construction with a high-quality, architecturally-sound planning, adapted to meet the needs of the disabled and the purposes for which such an edifice was designed. The building comprises a custom floor plan, which is separated into two main areas: one designed for rail services, which covers a surface area of 324 square metres; and another open, high-ceilinged area, which includes the waiting room and cafeteria. Dotted around this covered square are various shops and amenities catering to the needs of passengers: travel agency and operator information centre, public toilets, car rentals, and newsagents. This second area covers a surface area of 399 square metres.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Adif, Antonio González, the President of the Rioja regional government, Pedro Sanz, and the Mayor of Logroño, Tomás Santos, accompanied by the CEO of ECISA and other directors of the company.

ECISA completes its first building works in the Persian Gulf The construction company has completed work on the sports facilities adjacent to the Qatar Military Academy ECISA has successfully completed building works on one of three construction projects currently being undertaken in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Specifically, this is a sports area adjacent to the Qatar Military Academy, which is also being built by ECISA.

This project has been developed on an 88,000 m2 plot of land and includes the construction of pitches to accommodate various sports; an athletics track surrounding an artificial football pitch; covered, reinforced-concrete stands, with changing rooms on the lower floor, and a military training ground. An 800-metre-long driveway has been built, leading to a building used for target practice. . Around 1000 contractors, hired directly by ECISA, were involved in this construction, which was carried out in record time and under strict observation of the agreed deadlines, giving an idea as to the scope of the project. The project was promoted by the Private Engineering Office, belonging to the Amir of Qatar, who has shown immense satisfaction with the final results achieved, a fact that will open the door to future collaboration between both parties. Since 2008, the Alicante-based company has been involved in a process of both national and international expansion, which has prompted it to open a regional office in Qatar, from where it directs and co-ordinates expansion of the company in the Persian Gulf. At present, besides undertaking construction works in Qatar, the company has submitted its tender for other projects in various countries in this region to construct residential buildings and other buildings that are in the process of awarding contracts. ECISA’s foresight is focused on continued growth in this region, where its technical expertise and the abilities of its workforce are garnering an excellent reputation amongst clients.

ECISA strengthens its national presence with works in 10 autonomous communities The company is opening a regional office in Madrid in order to manage projects that have already commenced in the central and northern parts of the country

ECISA Corporación Empresarial is continuing with its process of geographical expansion by increasing its national presence in the construction sector. The company is working on nearly twenty projects in 10 different autonomous communities. In addition, the company has opened a regional office in Madrid that will enable better management of the expansion being carried out in the central and northern parts of the country. ECISA’s expansion project is currently in the midst of development. The Alicante-based construction firm, which has operated mainly in the Community of Valencia for most of its more than 40 years of existence, is carrying out private and public works projects in a further nine autonomous communities. In particular, the company has seen expansion in the regions of Madrid, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla-León, Murcia, La Rioja, Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Balearic Islands.

100 subsidised houses in Meco (Madrid)

Upgrading and improvement of N-430 motorway in Albacete

The work being undertaken by ECISA in these areas has a total value of more than 130 million euros. These works incorporate different building types, both structural and civil engineering. Firstly, it is worth highlighting the construction of more than 600 subsidised houses, both for sale and rental with the option to buy, in two locations in the Community of Madrid, Meco and Vicálvaro, as well as the building of a new auditorium in the Murcian town of Puerto Lumbreras, the Logroño train station, and the construction of commercial areas in the Palma de Mallorca airport. Secondly, the public works that the company is involved in range from various railway engineering works, participating in the construction of some of the high-speed railway lines, to the upgrading and improvement of roads and various hydraulic works. The recent opening of a regional office in the Madrid neighbourhood of Meco, which is linked to the offices in Alicante and Valencia, is in addition to this work. This is of strategic importance for the company, given that this office will oversee the co-ordination and management of the expansion in the central and northern parts of Spain, and at the same time allow closer and more direct contact with the various central offices. The opening of this headquarters is therefore a step forward in ECISA’s expansion plan as a construction firm of national scope.

Hispana de Instalaciones installs climate control in two UMH sports centres Hispana de Instalaciones, the service provider belonging to ECISA Concesiones, has finished installing a climate control system into two sports centres belonging to the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH) (University of Miguel Hernández de Elche). The firm has been in charge of installing the necessary climate control systems into the sports centre, which is located on the Elche campus. This area comprises courts for indoor football, basketball, handball, and other sports as well as a gymnastics area, cafeteria and first aid room. In order to acclimatise this building, area-specific climate control systems have been put in place, so that the temperature in each particular area is adjusted independently. This set-up, which uses a centralised control system, allows improved energy efficiency and ensures that the conditions are right in each area. Moreover, a climate control facility has been installed in the UMH High Performance Centre. The area-specific climate control system was also selected in this instance in order to have different climates in the offices and sports grounds. The total power installed in both projects is 1,200,000 Kcal/h and the budget for the construction works was 550,000 euros.

More than 100 people, including students and professionals, attended the event which attracted experts from the field of construction and health and safety such as Regional Employment Director, Ramón Rocamora; the Director of the Valencia Institute for Occupational Health and Safety, Gustavo Arcenegui; the Manager of the Occupational Health and Safety Unit of the Labour Inspectorate of Alicante, José María Gutiérrez; expert in criminal law at the Garrigues Law Firm, Ignacio Pérez; those in charge of occupational health for union members, Francisco Velasco of the Communist Trade Union and Juan F. Richarte of the General Trade Union of Workers; and those with similar roles at ECISA, who gave their view as health and safety managers at one of the leading companies in the province.

Presentation on Corporate Social Responsibility ECISA recently participated in two conferences on the topic of corporate social responsibility (CSR), having been invited as a company that has demonstrated commitment in this area. Firstly, the company’s commitment to social work was presented on 27 April in a conference on CSR organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Miguel Hernández in Elche. The conference was attended by Laura Corrales, Human Resources Manager at ECISA, who took part accompanied by representatives from leading Alicante-based companies. In addition, on 7 May, a working breakfast was held at the COEPA headquarters on the theme of “Trends in Corporate Social Responsibility”, organised by the Centre of Business Knowledge Management. CEO, Manuel Peláez Robles, attended on behalf of ECISA and gave his vision on the importance of CSR in traditional sectors, highlighting the fact that it increases the reputation of companies, promotes community pride, and generates profit in the long-term.

The artist was accompanied on stage by Antonio Muñoz and gala host Natalia Candela.

More than 600 people attend homage to Antonio Llinares Nearly 600 people attended last October’s recital ‘The voice of Antoniello and his friends through the years’, a concert performed in homage to Antonio Llinares, which took place in the auditorium of the University of Alicante. Once again, the Manual Peláez Foundation wished to offer its support to cultural events in Alicante by sponsoring a musical event which included the group “Voces de Antaño”, sextet “Plectro Ensamble”, duo ‘Dos paraguayos’, and the collaboration of singer-composer Javier Peláez, a director at ECISA and patron of the Manuel Peláez Foundation. The public enjoyed a large repertoire of popular songs, ballads, and tunes to remember, in an emotional concert that culminated in the audience all singing in unison to the famous Guantanamera song.

UMH inaugurates mural of artist Carmen Montero The University of Miguel Hernández hosted the inauguration of a mural, situated in the Rectory entrance of the Elche campus, which reproduced a nineteenth century engraving of Elche. Projects to ensure social and scientific advancement Promoting stem cell research, financing the setting-up of a meeting point for families, and encouraging the social-economic reintegration of those infected with HIV are some of the projects carried out thanks to collaboration between the Rose Caja Mediterráneo Foundation and the Manuel Peláez Foundation (FMP). During recent months, these two parties have signed agreements with other organisations, such as the Diógenes Foundation, Vínculos Infantiles, and the Cáritas Diocesana Orihuela-Alicante (Orihuela-Alicante Diocese), to finance social welfare projects. This collaboration has served to ensure advances in science, made by the Diógenes Foundation, such as corroborating that injections of bone marrow stem cells improve the motor function of those suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This support has also led to the setting-up of the Family Meeting Point of the Vínculos Infantiles Association in order to increase protection of minors involved in dysfunctional family matters. Cáritas, the Manuel Peláez Foundation, and CAM have provided financial assistance to two programmes, one which will help around 180 low-income families in six provincial towns who are in danger of social exclusion and another which will help those infected with HIV, who are involved in the Cáritas AIDS project, improve their quality of life.

New area for nuns of the Santa Faz Monastery The Clarisa nuns of the Santa Faz Monastery unveiled a new area set aside for this religious congregation’s novice nuns, financed by the Foundation and built by ECISA. Return of Concha Velasco to the stage of the Teatro Principal The Manuel Peláez Foundation promoted Concha Velasco’s return to the stage of the Teatro Principal in Alicante with her performance in the play ‘La vida por delante’ (‘Life First’), directed by José María Pou. In ‘La vida por delante’, Concha Velasco plays the part of a Jewish ex-prostitute in the twilight of her life who dedicates herself to looking after other prostitutes’ children, educating them about their culture, race, and religion. The play is based on the 1975 novel by the writer and French diplomat Romain Gary. Teamed with the popular actress are cast members Rubén de Eguía, Carles Canal and José Luis Fernández. During the performance, the Foundation’s Vice President, Enrique Peláez, commented that “for me, as an Alicantino and as Vice President of the Manuel Peláez Foundation, it gives me great pleasure to see this play being premiered in Alicante”. He further emphasised that it gave him “tremendous satisfaction to work with and support the Teatro Principal to produce shows of the highest calibre such as this one”. The theatre was almost at full capacity during the play’s run. Cooperation between the Foundation and the Teatro Principal has been ongoing for many years and in 2007 resulted in the two coming together to commemorate the theatre’s 160th anniversary with the sponsorship of an opera gala. Similarly, the national premiere in Alicante of the production ‘El Caballero de la Rosa’ (‘The Gentleman of the Rose’) and, at the beginning of this year, the staging of the play ‘Un Dios Salvaje’ (‘A Savage God’) took place as a result of such a partnership.
