Biography Catherine Brodie Catherine Brodie has a B.S. and an M.A. in music education from Eastern Michigan University. She served as a graduate conductor for Emily Lowe and the EMU Madrigal Singers. She retired from Monroe public schools with 25 years of service in music education. She is an active member of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association where she serves on the adjudication committee. She is the secretary for the American Choral Director’s Association Michigan. Catherine has directed several State Honor’s Choirs. Her choirs have also been invited to sing on MSVMA and ACDA-MI Conference programs. In 1997 Catherine was chosen by the Michigan Music Teachers Association as teacher of the year for her work in Elementary Music Education. She was selected as teacher of the year in 2005 by the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Catherine is past conductor of several choirs at Monroe High School who consistently received superior ratings. She is also past conductor of Oakland Singers, Toledo Opera Children’s Chorus and the River Raisin Centre for the Arts Cantate. She is the current conductor for the Eastern Michigan University Women’s Chorus as well as the Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale. She also serves as conductor for MCCC Prelude a children’s chorale. She is a member and assistant conductor of the John Tyner Chorale, and St. Paul’s Methodist Chancel Choir. She directs the St. Paul’s United Methodist bell choir. Catherine and her husband Bill have three sons; Matthew, Andrew and Brian and three grandsons; Liam, Aidan and Caleb.
Alyce Sangster Alyce Sangster grew up in the small town of Shafter, California. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She subsequently taught music in Arizona, where she met and later married Walter Sangster, a band director from Ypsilanti. They presently live in Ypsilanti and have four children. Mrs. Sangster teaches private piano lessons and particularly enjoys accompanying. She currently accompanies for Lincoln Schools and Carillon Women’s Chorale in addition to MCCC Agora Chorale.
MCCC Agora Chorale MCCC Agora Chorale has a long tradition in Monroe that goes back over 50 years to the start of the college. Past conductors include Bob Merkle, Sharon Metz, Elaine Rugila, and John Tyner. Under Mrs. Brodie’s baton the choir has been involved in the Bicentennial Concert in honor of the War of 1812. They have also performed in “Late Night Catechism” in the Meyer Theatre. Many of the Women of Agora Chorale also sang as the nun’s in a Monroe Community Players presentation of “The Sound of Music”. The choir is a perfect blend of town and gown singers who range in age from 16 to 80. We welcome new singers!
John C. Tyner John C. Tyner retired in 2005 as the Coordinator of Music Education for Monroe Public Schools. He holds degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University, where he was Associate Conductor of the Choral Union. At Monroe High School, in addition to his administrative duties, he conducted the Concert Choir, Mixed Choir, and a small select ensemble, Generations of Sound. His school groups consistently received superior ratings at district, state and national events and appeared at the Michigan Music Conference and the Michigan Youth Arts Festival several times. Mr. Tyner is currently Director of Music at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe and the John Tyner Chorale, and former director of the Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale. In conjunction with the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, John, each year presents a community wide presentation of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah”. He formerly conducted the Monroe Youth Chorale and Youth Orchestra. He has been active in both the Michigan School Vocal Music Association and the American Choral Directors Association holding various positions on the boards of both organizations. He is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout the state. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors at the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, and the Monroe City/County Fine Arts Council. He was elected by his colleagues as the Michigan Vocal Music Teacher of the Year, the Michigan Music Educator’s Teacher of the Year, and has been selected to the Who’s Who of American Teachers eleven times. He conducted the 1984 High School Men’s State Honors Choir the 1997 High School SATB State Honors Choir and the 2004 State Junior High/ Middle School SATB Choir. Additionally, he was awarded the Michigan Administrator of the year award for 2000 and as an Accomplished Music Educator by the Music Educators National Conference in 2001. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Maynard Klein award from the American Choral Directors Association. He and his wife Catherine have two children, Matthew (Molly) and Sara and three grandsons Orion, Harrison and Emmett and two granddaughters, Josie and Marilyn.
Inger Oswald Inger Oswald is a graduate of Western Michigan University with a B.S. in Music Education. Inger taught K-12 music for four years in the public schools. She than turned her talents to accompanying. She is the past accompanist for Rochester High School and the Southfield Madrigal Chorale. She currently is the Organist for St. Paul’s United Methodist church in Monroe, MI. She also teaches privately. Inger is married to John Oswald.
The John Tyner Chorale The John Tyner Chorale is made up of singers with a passion for choral music and are selected by the founder and director, John C. Tyner, many are former members of the Monroe High School choral music program or colleagues and friends of the director. The Chorale has performed at the ACDA-MI Choral hour. and is committed to performing the highest quality literature in excellent acoustical environments. The ensemble provides an ideal performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal it is to make music at a high level. Their performances are well attended and highly anticipated events offered in and around the Monroe community.
