CATHERINE BRODIE

Catherine Brodie has a B.S. and an M.A in music education from Eastern Michigan University. She served as a graduate conductor for Emily Lowe and the EMU Madrigal Singers. She retired from Monroe public schools with 25 years of service in music education. She is an active member of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association where she serves on the adjudication committee. She is the secretary for the American Choral Director’s Association Michigan. Catherine has directed several State Honor’s Choirs. Her choirs have also been invited to sing on MSVMA and ACDA-MI Conference programs. In 1997 Catherine was chosen by the Michigan Music Teachers Association as teacher of the year for her work in Elementary Music Education. She was selected as teacher of the year in 2005 by the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Catherine is past conductor of several choirs at Monroe High School who consistently received superior ratings. She is also past conductor of Oakland Singers, Toledo Opera Children’s Chorus and the River Raisin Centre for the Arts Cantate. She is the current conductor for the Eastern Michigan University Women’s Chorus as well as the Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale. She also serves as conductor for MCCC Prelude a children’s chorale. She is a member and assistant conductor of the John Tyner Chorale, and St. Paul’s Methodist Chancel Choir. She directs the St. Paul’s United Methodist bell choir. Catherine and her husband Bill have three sons; Matthew, Andrew and Brian and three grandsons; Liam, Aidan and Caleb.

MARK B. FELDER

Mark B. Felder has been band director at Monroe County Community College for twenty-two years. Before and during that time he was the band director of the award-winning Jefferson High School Bands for twenty-nine years. Mark served twelve years in local and state offices of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, including President of District 12. He was named Band Director of the Year for District 12 of MSBOA. He also was named Music Alumnus Guest Conductor of the Year in 1988 for Eastern Michigan University. Mark has been musical director for over 150 musicals including 12 years as a musical director at Croswell Opera House in Adrian, MI. He received the prestigious Jeff nomination in Chicago for Best Musical Direction for the second national tour of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. He has been a guest lecturer at The University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, University of Toledo, and Adrian College. He was recently name musical director for the Dodworth Saxhorn Band, a Civil Era Brass Band. Mark is owner of Vivo Productions, a local recording studio. He is a regular performer with the Johnny Knorr Orchestra out of Toledo, Ohio and has toured with Stars of the Lawrence Welk, Manhattan Transfer, and the Shrine Circus. Mark and his wife, Ann, have three children and live in Monroe, Michigan.

Apply for a performing music scholarship in the area of band or choir at Monroe County Community College. Choir applicants must perform a prepared solo and some sight singing. Band applicants must perform a solo or an etude, and provide a pianist where accompaniment is required; play five of the scales listed in the MSBOA Proficiency I or II guidelines; and play a short selection of sight reading (music provided) for the audition. Applicants for band must request a recommendation from your high school band director. Applicants for choir must request a recommendation from a high school choir director, counselor or teacher. For both, applicant must provide the reference's name and email. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student (twelve hours or more) prior to the first day of classes of fall semester, must maintain a cumulative 2.2 grade point average, take the Agora Chorale or Band courses offered each semester, and participate in each Chorale or Band concert. The scholarship cannot be extended beyond two years.
