CATHERINE BRODIE

Catherine Brodie has a B.S. and an M.A in music education from Eastern Michigan University. She served as a graduate conductor for Emily Lowe and the EMU Madrigal Singers. She taught at Eastern Michigan University for 20 years in music education and recently retired from there in April of 2017. She retired from Monroe public schools with 25 years of service in music education. Catherine is past conductor of several choirs at Monroe High School who consistently received superior ratings. Her choirs at MHS have been invited to sing on MSVMA and ACDA-MI Conference programs In past years. She is also currently the choral conductor of Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale and MCCC Prelude, a children’s choir. Mrs. Brodie is an Emeritus member of (MSVMA) Michigan School Vocal Music Association where she served as District Manager, Honors Choir Supervisor, State Solo and Ensemble Supervisor, Sight Reading and Repertoire chair, and the Adjudication committee. She is the secretary for (ACDA) the American Choral Director’s Association Michigan. Catherine has directed several State Honor’s Choirs. She will conduct the SA Middle School Honors Choir in January of 2018. Catherine was chosen by the Michigan Music Teachers Association as teacher of the year for her work in Elementary Music Education. She was also selected as teacher of the year in 2005 by MSVMA. She is past conductor of the Eastern Michigan University Women’s Chorus. She has also conducted Oakland Singers, Toledo Opera Children’s Chorus and the River Raisin Centre for the Arts Cantate. She is a member of the John Tyner Chorale, and St. Paul’s Methodist Chancel Choir. She directs the St. Paul’s United Methodist bell choir. Catherine and her husband Bill have three sons; Matthew, Andrew and Brian and three grandsons: Liam, Aidan and Caleb.

ALYCE SANGSTER

Alyce Sangster, accompanist, grew up in the small town of Shafter, California. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She subsequently taught music in Arizona, where she met and later married Walter Sangster, a band director from Ypsilanti. They presently live in Ypsilanti and have four children. Mrs. Sangster teaches private piano lessons and particularly enjoys accompanying. She currently accompanies for Lincoln Schools. Dundee Public Schools and Carillon Women’s Chorale in addition to MCCC Agora Chorale.

MCCC AGORA CHORALE

MCCC Agora Chorale has a long tradition in Monroe that goes back over 50 years to the start of the college. Past conductors include Bob Merkle, Sharon Metz, Elaine Rugila, and John Tyner. Under Mrs. Brodie’s baton the choir has been involved in the Bicentennial Concert in honor of the War of 1812. They have also performed in “Late Night Catechism” in the Meyer Theatre. Many of the Women of Agora Chorale also sang as the nun’s in a Monroe Community Players presentation of “The Sound of Music. The choir is a perfect blend of town and gown singers who range in age from 16 to 80.


JOHN C. TYNER

John C. Tyner, holds degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University, where he was Associate Conductor of the Choral Union. He retired in 2005 as the Coordinator of Music Education for Monroe Public Schools. At Monroe High School, in addition to his administrative duties, he conducted the Concert Choir, Mixed Choir, and a small select ensemble, Generations of Sound. His school groups consistently received superior ratings at district, state and national events and appeared at the Michigan Music Conference and the Michigan Youth Arts Festival several times. Mr. Tyner is currently Director of Music at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe and the John Tyner Chorale, and former director of the Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale. In conjunction with the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, John, each year presents a community wide presentation of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah”. He formerly conducted the Monroe Youth Chorale and Youth Orchestra. He has been active in both the Michigan School Vocal Music Association and the American Choral Directors Association holding various positions on the boards of both organizations. He is also a former member of the Board of Directors at the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, and the Monroe City/County Fine Arts Council. He was elected by his colleagues as the Michigan Vocal Music Teacher of the Year, the Michigan Music Educator's Teacher of the Year, and has been selected to the Who’s Who of American Teachers eleven times. He conducted the 1984 High School Men’s State Honors Choir the 1997 High School SATB State Honors Choir and the 2004 State Junior High/Middle School SATB Choir. Additionally, he was awarded the Michigan Administrator of the year award for 2000 and as an Accomplished Music Educator by the Music Educators National Conference in 2001. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Maynard Klein award from the American Choral Directors Association. He and his wife Catherine have two children, Matthew (Molly) and Sara, three grandsons Orion, Harrison and Emmett and two granddaughters, Josephine and Marilyn.

THE JOHN TYNER CHORALE

The John Tyner Chorale is made up of singers with a passion for choral music and are selected by the founder and director, John C. Tyner, many are former members of the Monroe High School choral music program or colleagues and friends of the director. The Chorale is committed to performing the highest quality literature in excellent acoustical environments. The ensemble provides an ideal performance venue for experienced and motivated choral singers whose goal it is to make music at a high level. Their performances are well attended and highly anticipated events offered in and around the Monroe community.

In person at the MCCC Cashier’s Office in the Audrey M. Warrick Student Services/Administration Building (Building A) Tickets may also be purchased at the door, if available. All sales are final. Ticket packages do not include VIP seating. No refunds or exchanges. Event information is subject to change at the discretion of MCCC. Discounts Groups of 15 or more, seniors, and MCCC staff and students can receive a $2 discount off the full ticket price when tickets are purchased in person at the MCCC Cashier’s Office prior to the day of the event. Discounts will not be given the day of the performance. Tickets are based on availability, so please make your plans early. Student Rush Monroe County Community College students with a valid student I.D. can purchase up to two tickets at half price 30 minutes before the start of any show. Catering for Groups In conjunction with one of our events, groups of 20 or more can take advantage of the beautiful spaces right inside the La-Z-Boy Center by holding a gathering in one of our reception areas.
