The opening round for this evenings performance was written by Lowell Mason who is considered to be the father of public school music. Mr. Mason felt that music should be included in the public schools. In 1832 he founded the Boston Academy of Music, and in 1838 he established in Boston the first public-school music program in the United States. He was also influential in the training of music teachers. His compositions include the hymn tunes for “From Greenland’s Icy Mountains,” “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” and “My Faith Looks Up to Thee.”

MCCC Prelude Chorale
MCCC Prelude was started in 2012 to enable the young singers in the Monroe Area to have a quality music program that was above and beyond the school music programs. Monroe County Community College graciously supported the decision to begin the chorale which is made up of fifth through eighth grade students. Our mission statement is: “to educate and inspire children to understand and value the art of singing and its lifelong impact on teamwork, dedication and the human spirit.” We have also been supported with scholarship money from United Way of Monroe, Kiwanis, and we have received a foundation grants from MCCC to cover music and scholarships. Our choir has performed with The John Tyner Chorale, and Carillon Women’s Chorale, Chariscurro Men’s Chorale, and the St. Paul’s United Methodist Praise Ringers. In May of 2014 the choir won first place and a Superior rating from Festival in the Parks at Cedar Point. In May of 2016 they took first place superior rating in Chicago for a music festival. This year they will travel to Ohio and Kentucky on choir tour.
