about me + color hi My name is Karina Perlaza I think design has always been a par t of me, wether it was choosing the colors that would go between the lines of my coloring books or rearranging the furniture in my room as a kid, since those days I’ve realized my vibrant Colombian + Ecuadorian cultures have exposed me to loud and exciting colors that I have grown to love and integrate into my every day life Travel motivates me, learning about the different cultures all over the world and observing how they differ from the traffic lights, to how they are similar in their traditional... or ancient, architecture I want to take those experiences and apply them into my designs, I want to apply life into my designs

M2 Color is the intangible, power ful sensation that has the ability to enhance our physical environment, influence our personal experiences of space, and provide a greater sense of health and well-being Color Theory is the study and practice of a set of principles used to understand the relationship among colors
theory + color three Dimensions of Color:
ADDITIVE COLOR
HUE Hue is the proper ty of light by which the color of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or yellow in refrence to the visible spectrum VALUE Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color CHROMA Chroma refers to the purity of a color, completely absent of any white, gray or black that would lessen its intensity or saturation
When the primary-light colors red, green, and blue are mixed, white light is the result
SUBTRACTIVE COLOR For paints, dyes, colorants + inks, where blue, red, and yellow are the primary colors + in printing + photography where cyan, magenta + yellow are the primary colors, subtractive mixing, the solid material we are veiwing will absorb and reflect wavelengths of color 4

designers + color For our first digital presentation of the semester, we were to choose one of the given architectural projects around the world and disect them Once choosen we were to give a background of the architect and the project; why was it built, what is the function + purpose? Then, into detail about the color(s) used in the project. Why was the color used? Does it have a symbolic reasoning or is it simply the characteristics of the hue that appealed to the architect Finally, a summary and conclusion about what was learned about the color(s) + project

FILM + color This assingment really put our eye to the test as we were to watch a movie and choose scenes that caught our attention emotionally and aesthetically as we followed the story of the main character The scenes we chose were to show the progresson of the film and how the character developes throughout We were also meant to extract the specific palette of each scene and explain how the said palette influenced the mood of the scene

BALANCE + color types of color balance
Balance refers to the relationship of different hues to one another when each is perceived to be equal in visual weight In order to achieve balance, hues, values, and chroma must have contrast
value contrast (LIGHT/DARK) Color contrasts create more stimulating results The amounts of contrast desired depend the space types and the design application needed hue balance (COMPLEMENTS) Complimentary colors are those colors that when placed next to one another intensify the other hue, making each to appear brighter intensity contrast (BRIGHT/DULL) The same perceptual proper ties of weight will apply with light colors and dark colors, known as value Light colors will appear visually closer and lighter + dark colors appear fur ther + heavier size of color area (LARGE/SMALL) The larger the amount of color used, the lighter the space will appear; the smaller the amount of color used, the darker it appears

PHOTOGRAPHY + color This week we got off the computer and took our camera to focus on the colors that are in imediate, every day enviroment This par ticular weekend was my grandmother’s 88th bir thday and my family went to a restaurant in Key Largo, Florida to celebrate Although the celebration was not the main focus of my assignment, I focused on the restaurant and the enviroment of the Keys

RYTHM + color Rythm is a natural evolutionary trait in nature that can be transferred to interior spaces and can be fur ther emphasized with color
five types of visual effects
repetition the systematic orderly succesion of identical design elements (shape, line, color, form) along a define path in space alternation when two design elements are repeated in sequence similar to repition, but, the pattern includes two distinctly different elements (round to square, red to blue) as opposed to one element repeating
continuation the placement of one or more colors throughout an interior to create a continuous movement of the eye through the space radiation the use of a concentric color arrangement instead of objects to unify design elements and create visual movement
progression the repition of similar elements with a continuous chane (large to small, low to high, narrow to wide, light to dark) 32

R E TA I L + c o l o r Our first venture into the field was to choose a store of our choice and look for characteristics desribed in our book There are par ticular brands that protect their image and don’t allow pictures to be taken in their stores, and that was an obsticle some had to overcome I chose a boutique in South Miami that was open to me learning more about the design of the store which made this assignment enjoyable to see what we learn in a real life setting

Proportion/Scale + color
Propor tion is defined as par ts of a whole, as the size and relationship between elements and the visual composition of space Scale refers to the size of a shape in relation to a given known, usually regarding the human body and its position within space
the fibonacci sequence The dominant color makes up the background of the space Second + Third colors are considered secondary or sub-dominant The smallest propor tions are considered accent colors
rule of thirds
60 - 70 % dominant
20 - 30 % subdominant
10 - 20 % accent Color can be used to change our visual perception of a space’s actual size

M 9 cont U n i t y / H a r m o n y + c o l o r seven colors of harmony Unity is the repetition m o n o c h r o m a t i c of color to achieve a A single hue is selected with variations in tint, tones, + shades to provide variety in a palette unifies whole
multi hue All rules are out - which ever colors and the amount used is up to your discretion
Harmony is the per fect balance between individual color relationships
achromatic Color-neutral schemes
complementary One cool + one warm hue split complementary + double complimentary Split : two colors on either side of its complement Double : two adjacent hues + their complements analogous Incorporates between three + five adjacent hues, this scheme is less star tling and more inviting triadic + tetrad Triadic : three colors that are equidistant from one another Tetrad : four equally spaced colors on the color wheel

RENDERING + color We were given a variety of pictures each with their palettes extruded This week we focused on dominant, secondary, and accent colors of the color palette From the picture we chose, we decided which colors would fall under those categories and explain Once that was established we rendered a photo using that palette and applied the colors appropriately to the label we gave them

H O S P I TA L I T Y + c o l o r Another site visit occured with this assignment but instead of somewhere of our liking we were given a list of hotels to choose from We used Chapter 8 of our book in order to describe characteristics in the hotel We were to choose two different locations in the hotel and point out those characteristics

M12
WORKPLACE + color The same chapter for the hospitality assignment was used for workplace We chose from a list of brand offices to point out different aspects of the design And with the characteristics pointed out in the chapter we described how the brand designers put them to use in the office

C U LT U R E + c o l o r The final assignment was to describe the colors of our cultures and another’s We were to research pictures of traditions in the countries and look at what the colors as well as what the people wore, ate, and did We were to find out what the meanings of the different colors of the land, or the flag meant and how they incorporated those meanings into the country’s culture

conclusion This semester has taught me how much color can influence a space you are designing, how not only color but also light can make or break an experience I’ve learned about the different ranges a color has and how to address them and also the different palettes there are to create a cer tain experience The Color + Design book showed me different characteristics there are to look for in a space and how to call them out It taught me how impor tant size, propor tion + harmony are in our enviroment and how to create balance Overall, Color Theory is an impor tant aspect of design that every designer needs to grasp in order to be successful 70
