UNDERSTANDING THE GAME

“WHAT

” ? R O F T A H T L L A C “THERE WAS NO ADVANTAGE IN THAT?” T A H T S Unlike most sports when advantage is awarded by a WA referee in water polo regardless of the outcome the ball cannot be taken back

“WHY IS THAT A TURN OVER?” A turn over is called for several reasons: -‐  Offensive foul -‐ Pushing, grabbing, holding the defending player -‐  Ball under (completely submerged under the water while being tackled) -‐  Being offside – inside the 2m area without the ball while aEacking -‐  If a player is awarded a free throw and doesn’t take it promptly -‐  End of possession clock (30 Seconds)

“WHY WASN’T THAT A GOAL?” -‐ The move by the player or any other player prior to the goal may have resulted in a turn over (see above). -‐ ShooPng aRer faking or delay of free throw from outside 5m. -‐ The ball didn’t completely cross the goal line.

“HOW IS THAT NOT A FOUL?” A foul is: A minor foul is the result of a defending player’s aEempt to go for the ball but in doing so impedes onto the aEacking player. The aQacking player MUST let go of the ball to receive a foul. * TacPcally fouls are used to slow down play.

“HOW COME HE GOT SENT TO THE CORNER?” A player can be excluded for a major foul This includes: -‐  Hold, sink or pull back an opponent that prohibits an aEacking movement -‐  Exclusions are situaPonal -‐ Using two hands to block for a shot or pass

On behalf of the NZ NaPonal Teams Programme (NTP) I would like to welcome all players, coaches, managers and parents to these 2014 Under 14 NaPonal Champs.

CongratulaPons to the players for making it to these naPonal championships; I know it takes a lot of dedicaPon and hard work to make it this far. Well done.
