Professor Herve Dubois, Ioanni Delsante, Gianluca Vita Two important issues exist in the site that will be addressed through the design approach. The first issue is that the site is located in between two thresholds, city and rural that form physical barriers. Another issue is the poor existing social conditions in and around the site in conjunction with disproportional use of the site. The aim of this approach is to create a fusion in the site making it both a physical and social melting pot while maintaining its unique “in-between’’ character.

“I take another peek up and down the corridor. For a loony bin, its awful quiet. Most rooms have double doors. The outside door only has a small glass window so you can look in at the crazies; the inside door has bars. I’m sitting in the space between the two doors” - William Wharton, Birdy ( New York: Avon, 1978) S,M,L,XL O.M.A.

Professors Bang Keun You, Stefano Di Vita, Massimo Galluzzi Pedestrian connections The developed intervention is an effort to connect our site conceptually, historically, strategically and morphologically to follow the existing pattern of the city of Milan. The connection between the symbolic historical axis spreading through Corso Sempione finds elements that constitute to the creation of a new centre in Piazzale Accursio, respecting the Heritage element of the axis ( by involving the historical element of our site which is the Fuel station by architect Bacciochi ) and in addition instilling a sense of modernity addressing the issues faced by the current situation in the site.

Public Spaces

The introduction of a Technology centre complex is the main function introduced ( a choice made by the method of elimination based on the analysis of all the existing functions surrounding the site) , including a series of interventions addressing other prominent functions being part of the site such as educational facilities. The second most important element is what was identified as a continuous ribbon, a notion that not only applies to the buildings formed, but is also evident in the formation of public spaces and applied to the current morphology of the site respecting the semicircular formation of the existing blocks.

Green Areas

Ponticelli is a residential district located in the East part of Napoli and has number of problems which were address through the design approach. Neighborhood is separated from Napoli both by highway and railway system. Site is located on the outskirts of the city and has number of abandoned and poorly maintained buildings as well as undefined and deteriorated threshold with agricultural areas. Another important problem is vast amount of underused green areas. Urban strategy for the district has five fundamental steps. First the barrier – highway, becomes the connection and transforms into the public space with functions depending on the part of the city and needs. Second, regeneration of periphery, introducing new public spaces with public functions, outdoor activities aimed to foster the educational process since district has high rates of undergraduate people. Step three is to change the unused urban green areas into public space and parks. Step four is regeneration of abandoned buildings and creating public functions on the ground floor in order to create saver outdoor life. The last step is the environmental strategy which consists of number of interventions on different scales.

Plan | Elevations | Detail

Retrofitting project consists of existing residential buildings in Ponticelli with integration of public functions and services in order to improve the social interaction and level of residents participation in outdoor life, eliminating level of crime rate. Six existing buildings have linear typology and S-W and E-N facade orientation. Strategy goal is to improve energy performance of the buildings together with social aspects. In order to reduce the amount of the solar radiation, received by the facades internal layout of the apartments was improved respecting orientation. It was important to create flexible and resilient solution. For shading system of overheated facades was proposed movable shutters, loggias and balconies together with green faรงade system which is able to operate itself but also can involve residents to participate in the treatment and maintaining.

Taking into account social sustainability the created public spaces aims to improve communication and interaction between residents on different levels. The environmental approach on the building scale: Heating/cooling system – geothermal water system with wells and radiant floor. Ventilation – there celled shafts in precast concrete for extracting exhausted air from bathrooms and kitchens. Natural ventilation to supply apartments with fresh air. To cover the energy demands PV panels were proposed. Integrated rain water collection system which consists of pipes on the facades connected to the water detention courtyards ponds and water elements to create natural cooling effect.

Professor Pessoa Perreira Alves Henrique

Quartiere Triennale 8 is the residential district, located North West of Milan. Nowadays, site experiences number of fundamental issues like poor social conditions, absence of activities inside the district, enormous quantity of green spaces without any identity and meaning, poor pedestrian realms which all together create the unsafe and depressing atmosphere. However, one of the main problems is the constant noise pollution and the fact that some of the residential buildings are located in the restricted areas. Another issue is the ‘urban island’ state of the site caused by the close location of the highway which separate the district from the urban fabric of Milan. QT8 has the car-oriented design and can be accessed only by vehicles. There is only one pedestrian access which connects QT8 with Parco Portello by bridge. Chosen design approach aims to create a fusion of the site with city of Milan, simultaneously eliminating the noise pollution produced by the cars. The goal is to change the role of the highway from being a barrier into a vibrant public space which can offer the sequence of experiences and activities.

RE-FORM: FROM INTERSTITIAL INFRASTRUCTURE’S SITE TO TRANS-LOCAL URBAN SPACE Thesis project Year Place

2016|2017 Odessa, Ukraine

Professor Antonella Maria Eugenia Contin

For my thesis project I chose a subject which studies the current situation in the city where I was born, however is relevant to every industrial centre which undergoes the complex process of re-identification. The question of how city can re-invent itself in 21st century and what are the new meaning and types of production nowadays. The main industrial district of the city “Peresip” is located right next to port and 10 minutes away from the historic centre. Since, Soviet Union was destroyed, Ukraine is going through economic crises and process of self re-identification, slowly the speed of production decreased and Peresip became a gigantic void filled with abandoned industries, chaotically occupied by entrepreneurs. Due to the rapid process of industrialization in 19th century heavy infrastructure runs between the district, historic centre and port, dividing city and creating condition of ‘islandization’ . The main objective of this thesis is to understand what are the economic possibilities of Odessa, what can city produce in 21st century to get back on the world economic arena and what should be the new role of the site in order to become functional part of the city.

Developed hybrid building, creates high density intervention. Its key functions includes: transportation, accommodation, culture, enterprise, research, education and digital fabrication provide a space for the new emerging economy, all that based on the activities that are already happening in the city , project aimed to be deeply rooted into the city supporting all types and encouraging new types of production. By supporting innovation and creating an open collaborative platforms, city prepare itself to the inevitable disruptions in labour market, providing new job opportunities and bridging skill gaps it prepares people to make those shifts too. Project role is not only to be a physical bridge which connects separated parts of the city over existing barriers but also to become a start for the massive redevelopment of test-bed district and consequently city organization. Bridging together economy, education and enterprise creates new type of collaborative structures which can insure new synergies and innovation.

This project becomes a strong first step in the revitalization of ex-industrial district Peresip. In my opinion, in the overall urban strategy of the district redevelopment, this site should be a starting point, without this connection and establishing new relations between three segregated districts there is no actual possibility to integrate Peresip into the life of the city. Recharging those industrial landscapes and turning them into digital one, proposed emerging centralities will turn a void into the inclusive, continiuous active district, giving an isotropic quality to the city.

The interior design of private apartment located in Odessa, Ukraine. Project i developed while working in Art-Depot architecture and design studio. This apartment for family of 4 was designed in contemporary style. I developed the main open kitchen/living room area for family gathering - a common space which leads to the open terrace area and barbeque, both as designer and 3d visualizer.

Restoration of existing buildings 2016 Villanova sull’Ardo (PC), Italy Project deals with the reconstruction of two buildings, designed while i worked on a team of L’AB - Landscape Architecture Bureau. One of them to become an extension to the existing private house where family lives now, another reconstruction and extension of an existing building to become a separated residential house, the development of new outdoor area which can unify all the residential units together with design of the new master plan of the site. . In order to reduce the amount of the solar radiation, received by the facades we improve internal layout of the houses respecting orientation. It was important to create flexible and resilient solution which can change with the flow of time according to the current needs of residents.
