Capstone
For my capstone project I have chosen to renovate a 1914 cinema theater in the Denver Highlands. The idea for this project is to bring a glamorous entertainment venue to the thriving community of the Denver Highlands.
The Holiday
Concept: Nostalgic Essence To capture an era and create an experience with the character and qualities of the inspiring 1920s.
Program: The Holiday Cabaret Theater is a mixed use venue of approximately 6,500 sq ft. The space will be used by traveling and local theater companies/performance troupes. The Holiday will also serve food and drinks during performances. The front bar will be open to the public during shows to increase revenue. This project is a cabaret/ vaudeville style theater and bar. The Holiday is a perfect project for the growing community in the Denver Highlands area. The recently gentrified neighborhood is flooded with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, parks, hip bars, young couples and families. This area is thriving and would appreciate an entertainment venue within walking distance without the hassles of down town.

Site Considerations:
The area is filled with new businesses and old ones. Many restaurants, cafes, shops and parks can be found throughout the area. The Denver Highlands is located a just a few miles from downtown Denver on the North West side of I-25.
Goals:
The goal of this project is to bring a live theater venue to The Denver Highlands adding a source of fine entertainment to the surrounding neighborhood.

Existing Brick Walls
Design Development:
The challenge of this space was to create a symmetrical flow throughout the floor plan. This purpose was to reduce any wayfinding confusion and to maintain a balance as a person moves from one area to the next. Each area has defined characteristic that apply to the concept through materiality and spacial orientation. To celebrate the history of the building, the existing brick walls line the entry and are highlighted using glazing and decorative gobo lights. The Art Deco inspirations are seen throughout the ceiling design, lighting, entryways and the structural columns in the theater interior, creating spaces to add excitement and a sense of Hollywood glamour.

Lighting Methodology:
The lobby area is defined by a dropped ceiling mimicking a classic Art Deco fan shape and theater marquee. The lighting is mainly ambient but includes specified decorative lighting around the bar area. The theater area utilizes down-lighting to highlight the reflective wall-coverings and metallic paint used on the columns and ceilings. Custom chandeliers have been specified to emphasize the awe-inspiring experience of entering the theater.

Design Development:
Upon entering the lobby, the intent was to allow the theater goer a transition form the outside using a “crossing the threshold” moment with the concrete floor that imitates the end of the sidewalk. That “side walk” leads you to the ticket counter that is highlighted by an enormous marquee and light up 3form panels. The area is to attract the eye and guide a person to purchase tickets. Additional flooring of broadloom carpeting by Shaw Hospitality is to add acoustical qualities while infusing pops of color. An interesting element is the decorative gobo lights that have interchangeable patterns that can change out for new themes or logos by those renting The Holiday for benefits and functions. The South wall is covered in a purple type II vinyl by Graham and Brown. The wall-covering is commercial grade and adds a pleasing aesthetic that answers to the Art Deco design.

Design Development:
Behind the ticket counter is a sit down bar for people to enjoy a cocktail while waiting for a friend. Because of the separation of spaces between the lobby and theater, a person can enjoy a drink and small meal during a show without having a ticket. This will create more revenue for the theater and allow the bar to have an identity of its own. The flooring in the bar is WoodTalk Tile. This gives the illusion of wood but is more durable and appropriate for wet areas. The tile is specified for heavy traffic areas with a .6 coefficient.

Design Development:
The V.I.P. seating area was designed to create a sense of hierarchy in the different areas of the auditorium. This particular area is large enough for a group of six people to sit together. The booths are 7ft high and are upholstered in Eldelman Leather- Metallic Cobalt Blue. The leather has been Crypton enforced to sustain the fabric. The custom built table has a built in ice bucket appropriate to keep a bottle of wine or liqueur chilled. These added elements will make it a privilege for the theater goer to enjoy a night out. The ledge above the booth has decorative columns clad with class A MDC Wall-covering in Brilliant Stripe to add texture and depth. In addition, Art Deco inspired sculptures made by local artists will add a fun and interesting element that will relate to the cabaret style performances the theater hosts. The V.I.P. booths were placed in the back to add privacy and exclussivety.
VIP Seating Perspective Design Development:
ADA Ramp
The entryway to the theater is a fan shaped entry with a stained glass header to share a glimpse of the coming elegance to the theater. Built in cabinets are set on each side to store playbills and condiments used by the staff. The singular entrance adds unity after the two symmetrical paths from the lobby have come together. Above the doorway is the technical booth for the technical theater staff.

Lighting Detail The flooring in the theater is broadloom carpeting by Shaw. Carpeting contributes to the acoustics in the theater. A ramp is added to both sides of the floor plan to allow for access to those in wheelchairs. A type II vinyl wall-covering also by Graham and Brown is placed on the back wall by the entrance. The Art Deco pattern will add elegance to the V.I.P. area.

Design Development:
Entering into the theater, the first thing one should see are the rich blue theater curtains. These will pop due to the contrasting shades of grays, black and whites throughout the rest of the space. These curtains blue hue are answered by the blue booth seating in both the V.I.P., seating area and the secondary booth seating area. The decorative ceiling is dropped with cove lighting and twinkles from the metallic finish. Up lighting is seen shining through the decorative columns along the walls of the theater. The many different lighting levels add glamour to the materials used to finish the room making the space itself one the headliners of the show. The cabaret chairs are upholstered in Architex Avion Tarmac. With over 80,000 double rubs, material will hold nicely in this commercial design.

The original theater was raked throughout the entire space. While a ramp was added for ADA access, the different sections have been re-leveled to step down a foot to separate each seating group. This allows patrons to see clearly over the persons head in front of them with ease.
Ute Passage Memory Care Center will be an inviting and adaptive community for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. A natural environment will provide serenity to the residents and family members as well as top-notch medical assistance. Life is still a journey, even at this point in a person’s life. Ute Passage wants to make the transformation and healing process meaningful to the resident and family.
Healthcare Ute Passage
????? Concept : Transition
Site Considerations
Being located in the heart of Woodland Park where one has a direct view of Colorado’s most notable mountain, Pikes Peak, gives the residents at Ute Passage a connection to nature and beauty. This area is centrally located near a hospital, rehab centers, banks, shopping, Starbucks, museums, a movie theatre, a library, a cultural center and a Wal-Mart. Colorado Springs is also only 14 miles away, therefor the residents are only 20 minutes drive to a larger metro city. Ute Passage is located in a small community and has a sense of serenity and exclusiveness.
The concept of transition, is to provide the residents an easy and adaptive living center during a confusing time in his or hers life.
Program
To live a healthy life is a right that all people should be granted without regard of age, sex, race or religion. When health begins to deteriorate, the quality of life shall still be maintained by continually seeking to improve and mend the overall state of his or her life. Acting in a persons’ best interest to balance cost and care are vital. Individuals deserve a respectful life process therefore providing individual needs, community, comfort and care. Promoting physical maintenance with mental care is an important value to life. Family and close friends should be allowed and encouraged to take a part in a residents health plan. A person needs a sense of community to help his or her recovery. A natural environment can help the psychological state of mind as he or she connects with nature. Twenty-four hour services will instill
a sense of security and comfort to residents within the healthcare home. The target clientele will be middle class seniors who have resided in Woodland Park or other surrounding areas. These residents may be retired school teachers, doctors, ex-military or small business owners. Each unit will be space planned and meet ADA requirements. Using materials, signage and photos to familiarize residents with the space will help with mental adjustment. Adapting with nature and the natural circle of life is communicated with the architecture, location and the organic flow of the interiors. The overall design should promote positive transformation that is needed in the process of healing and understanding.

Color Diagram of Spaces
When A2 designing the floor plans for Ute Passage, wayfinding was highly important to keep in 1 mind. Throughout the project, the different wayfinding techniques will be described. Using colors, 32" - 1' photographs, music stations, textures and personalized shadow boxes will help with the complex way-finding issues that the residence of Ute Passage may have. Signage may be computerized and programmed to change for different information, such as time of day. Architectural clues such as monuments, lighting and attractive sight lines will also be provided throughout the building to give a better understanding of place.

As a resident, it is helpful to be able to glance into the next space before entering as the residences of Ute Passage my not feel comfortable to enter a space they are unsure about. Using various resin or glass partitions add a safe element that allows a sneak peek for the user to observe and then choose to transition to the area of interest. This translucent wayfinding also follows the conceptual idea of the Transition.
The Neighborhood The passageways in the resident units will all be painted the same to maintain a cohesive design throughout the building. Once the resident emerges from their individual unit, arrows in an organic yet simple form will immediately point them toward the neighborhood. They will be inlaid into the floor. Signage will also be provided on the walls with both words and pictures (i.e. a fork and spoon etc..). From the neighborhood to the central hub will be open inviting French doors that will entice a resident to explore and move about the home.
5" Clearance
Individuals seating areas are important for residents to feel comfortable and at ease.
Neighborhood Floor Plan Design Development:
When traveling through a space, it is important that the directions be intuitive and guiding. Adding slightly different flooring can help guide the resident to different main areas. Keeping in the mind the fact that many residents may have poor vision, we have chosen flooring that only has a slight difference in color as to not alarm the residents.
Entry Elevation to Neighborhood In the entry way of each resident, a shadowbox is placed to allow residents and their families to decorate their box with mementos and wayfinding elements to help the resident be familiar with their particular unit. Name tags are also included for familiarization.

The Range is a farm-to-table high end casual restaurant in Broomfield Colorado. Chef Thomas LaRiva really enjoys a professional environment that is also eco-concious and locally friendly. He wants to share his love for fresh food and the great wide open.

Hospitality
Program:
Chef Thomas Riva has a strong desire to keep things local. He has worked on a ranch and loves the idea of free range meat and farm fresh fruits and vegetables. Chef wanted an on-site green house as well as a multi-acre garden and farm located on the property. The Range is to be an upscale fine dining restaurant. The clientele would be young professional, couples and family gatherings. Thomas wants to provide local micro beers, wines and spirits. He wants the space to be open and warm with a rustic flair. My client also wants to include a patio that can house a small jazz band for the summer and warm winter nights. An open expo line is desired so customers can have a view into the kitchen. While he wants the space to be comfortable, Chef does not want booth seating. Extra circulation for a salad cart is also necessary to include.
Chef Thomas’ Mission Statement:
"Our mission is to have an inviting quality for guests and employees alike with an atmosphere that makes them feel like part of the family. We want to offer the best dining experience and to establish a long standing relationship in the restaurant community as the standard of quality that all will strive to equal. We will combine the freshest local ingredients possible of the highest quality and serve them with care and excitement. We will be stewards of the environment and use sound practices in production and disposal in all aspects of our business."

Site Considerations:
Broomfield is located just North of the city of Denver. The surrounding area is mainly populated by family homes and commercial businesses. The site is located on a large cultivated area that is appropriate for the multi acre garden the client requested behind the restaurant. The Range will be built approximately a mile off I-25 toward Fort Collins. This location is appropriate because of the large amount of space, access to a main highway and the close proximity from Denver.
Location:
441 E 136th Ave Broomfield, CO 80023
Design Development:
Opening up the space to allow for the live jazz music was important. NanaWalls have been placed on the West wall. This will also allow for fresh air to flow through the space on nice days. The private dining room is divided by sliding barn doors. These doors may be opened for a larger private party or closed off for a more intimate dining group. This allows for flexibility in seating. In the center of the dining room is a large captains table. Those who are seated there can see and be seen by the whole restaurant. The bar area is great for a group to meet and have some local beers during happy hour or while waiting for a table. The bathrooms are set off of the kitchen and are easy to access, though they are not within a visual sight line while customers are eating.

Lighting Methodology:
Above the captains table is a custom lighting fixture designed to replicate game antlers. We have chosen to update this rustic lighting fixture with a silver coating to add a finer and more high-end look. Above the bar top are lantern style pendants you might find out in the shed of the farm. Decorative lighting is spaced throughout the dining room and the private dining area. Recessed ambient lights are also installed for additonal lighting needs. The layered lighting is controlled by dimmers so that the levels of light can be controlled by the owners and the managers depending on the amount of light being let in by the large amount of windows.

Design Development:
There are three large custom designed fireplaces throughout the restaurant. Each fireplace has a different materiality. These materials can be found on a ranch or farm. The purpose is to tie in the homestead concept. The different materials used are wooden log veneers, treated old barn door wood and inlaid rusted pieces of old tractors and other farm machines. These three fireplace elements create spatial focus and double as sculptural art. These fireplaces have custome Eco Smart Fire to save on gas and energy.

Taking the Farm-to-Table theme further, wooden game heads have been specified and placed on the walls as artwork. These faux game heads are more socially acceptable and also allow for some more pops of color by painting them in colors found in fresh vegetables. These random pops of color are to balance out the very neutral colors found in the flooring and the walls. Barn doors on slides separate the private dining area from the main dining area. These doors are painted in bright yellow and have 3form inset windows to allow servers to maintain the tables and for the diner in the private room to feel seen and important. Also in the dining room is a tile mural designed by ImaginTile with photos taken by Chef Thomas himself.

Sustainable
Implementing sustainable attributes were a main requirement of the design. These have been considered through, materiality, construction, areas for recycling, window treatments, lighting and use of energy.
Lighting Methodology:
• Room related lighting is used throughout the space to create roughly the same visual connections at all points. This is recommended where the arrangement of task areas to be flexible. • Because of the many windows, solar shades have been added to block out the sun and to save energy. • The reception area, sampling room and the conference room have added decorative lighting to add character to the different areas of interest.

Kristin and Justin are a young couple in their late twenties/early thities. They have recently bought a new home in Evergreen, Colorado. Kristin is teaching assistant and Justin is a brew master and manager at a local Brewery. They are both very social and enjoy spending time outdoors and with friends. Kristin and Justin plan on living in their home for at least eight to ten years. They both want to keep the modern 60’s style the house was built in but they would like to incorporate some updated, contemporary styles as well. They both desire a clean an open space with a minimalistic appearance, but would still like the spaces to look lived in and touchable.

This couple likes to entertain frequently. A space in the garage will be dedicated to home brewing. A large bar area/ entertainment room is of large importance. They want the bar room not to resemble a “man-cave” as they both have interest in the space. This space should be inviting, colorful and reflect their personalities. Additionally Kristin and Justin would both like their own office. They both agree the kitchen should be open enough to stay involved with guests while entertaining, but they would like a small amount of privacy so they are not looking straight into the kitchen while dining. The couple both likes the idea for grays and random pops of color in the home, both agree they have no interest in the use of pink and purple. Kristin fell in love with the showers at the Four Season recently and desires a rain shower with side jets if possible. Separate sinks are desired. They would like the bathroom to be both a relaxing place and yet awakening for the morning. The master bedroom will have a queen-sized bed, a vanity/ make-up area for Kristin and a dresser set. This room needs to be clean and have ample storage. However, this room can have a more relaxed comfortable live-in look since this is the place where they will be most private and intimate with a hint of luxury. Together they want their home to represent cleanliness, yet be approachable. They love color but as an accent or a pop. Grey and neutral colors will down play to exciting colorful nodes throughout the home.

These colors are not directly in the viewing sight of the bed to maintain serenity. A large walk in closet with a small stackable washer and dryer is included. This bedroom is a safe haven and serves a dual purpose.

Master Bathroom:
The master bathroom explodes with pops of red against the black and white surfaces installed on the floors and walls. The pops of color add a retro cinema feel. A custom bathtub and shower have been installed. The shower features a rain shower as well as a hand held shower hose. The floors are heated to warm the space. Since Justin is left handed and Kristin is right handed, sideways facing sinks have been intalled for a better approch without knocking elbows. A separate toilet room was included for privacy. This bathroon is elegant and soothing.

Awards & Activities Awards & Activities
Lavs and Loos was a benefit sponsored by the Colorado Chapter of NKBA. Artists were given a lav or loo to decorate as they pleased for submission to a benefit auction. The proceeds were donated to a student at an NKBA credited school. Being the only student to participate, the proceeds were given solely to The Art Institute. My involvment helped the school financially and its reputation. My Lav was designed to be a bird bath. I took twigs to create the nest effect and painted the lav with enamel paint to create the inner shell of the bird egg. To add humor I added a bird fleeing the nest as if just born and free. My Lav won first place and went for the most scholarship money.
Design Within Reach sponsored a
snowboard design contest. I used one of the designs from my own art to create an exciting nature inspired board. My design was well recieved. The challenge was rewarding and a great experience.
Open for Design was a design submittal for the Denver Art Museum.
The purpose was to think outside the box while creating solutions to issues in your surrounding community. The submittals had a restraint of 2'x2'x2' and could not be made of perishable items. My solution was to use chalkboard spray paint of the exterior walls on stores and garages to encourage a safe way to self-express without permanent damage. In doing this, formerly unwanted graffiti may be more apealling since the artistic expression is no longer frowned upon. The museum showed my submittal and the Westword (as seen above) featured my solution in its online magazine article.
