Open Season By Addy

“Stop fooling around!” Mrs. Wells commanded angrily. “I can’t choose who goes outside to take pictures while you’re all acting like monkeys on caffeine!” But we were all deaf to her orders as we laughed and played. Ocea waved at the camera, laughing. “Do you all want to be stuck inside for recess in the library?!” Mrs. Wells exclaimed. Everyone went silent immediately, their faces pale.

The air was cold and the trees looked dull next to the fearsome sun. It blinded me as it bounced off the snow in the field. Will walked up to me and snarled, “I’m done taking pictures. I’m going back inside.” “We just walked out here! Are you going in just to be warm?” I exclaimed. He laughed evilly as he ran inside.

I quickly forgot about Will as I noticed some mysterious tracks. I remembered Mrs. Wells’ warning: “It’s hunting season. So stay out of the woods or someone could get hurt!” I couldn’t help myself. I had to follow them. I passed more tracks. Animal tracks and tracklike holes in the snow. My heart raced as I quickly figured out that there were tracks leading to the field. “I bet they’re the tracks of Ashi and Tati!” I mumbled.

But then I questioned in my brain. “Are these Tati’s tracks or the footsteps of a hunter?” I wondered. When I reached the field, I thought Tati and Ashi must be in the greenhouse. But when they weren’t there I started to feel panicked. “Where are they?” I growled. That panicky feeling growing inside me. I was in a BIG pickle now. I felt my brain working a million miles an hour, but now I didn’t think my brain could take it anymore because I felt a little tear drop down my cheek.

I spun around in circles, but they were nowhere in sight. I was panicking. Where were they? What if something bad had happened!! What if a hunter had shot them! I started to go back towards the school-- then a sudden movement caught my eye. There they were! Huddled together on the blacktop stood Ashi and Tati. It seemed like it took forever to get there, like I was running on a treadmill and trying to get across the ocean. “Ashi, Tati, where were you?” I cried, hugging them tightly. Ashi looked puzzled. “We were just in the woods,” she said a little unsure. Tati added, “Hey, Addy, what’s wrong? Are you crying?” I blushed. “Nooo......” Ashi nodded. “Yeah... Sure...” she laughed. “Come on, let’s go inside. As we left, I stole one last glance back at the tracks that had worried me so much. I turned back to my friends. “Boy, am I glad you weren’t shot!” I told them. “What?”they asked. I giggled. “It’s a long story...”
