Introduction
Imagine a house cat purring happily beside you. Then imagine it bigger, with yellowish fur and
brown or black spots. Now imagine it running as fast as your car on the highway, at 70 miles per hour. This animal is the fastest land animal on planet earth. This animal is a cheetah. Its scientiďŹ c name is Ancinyx Jubatus.

Names The scientiďŹ c name for a cheetah is Ancinyx Jubatus. Also there is the most common name: cheetah. The last
name is the king cheetah. Those are some names for a names for cheetah. Some people thought that the king cheetah was a sub species. The king cheetah is not another species.

Description Did you know that the cheetah is about the size of a large dog? The cheetah is 2 to 3 feet tall and 3.5 to 4.5 feet long. It weighs 86-143 pounds. The cheetah has a long tail because it helps the cheetah balance. It also has a small head. The fur on its throat and belly is white. It also has long and thin legs. The cheetah’s spine acts as a spring that helps the cheetah leap. The cheetah’s claws have spikelike things that help it not slip when it is running. The black lines that go from its eyes to its mouth are called tear marks. They are not from tears.

Habitat
For a cheetah to be able to survive it needs to know how to hunt. Then, when a cheetah knows how to hunt, it needs a big open space to chase its prey. Cheetahs usually like to live in big open biotopes like grasslands and savannas. Most of the food that cheetahs eat are Thomson’s gazelles, Grant’s gazelles, and the springbuck. Cheetahs are not the type of animal that

has a nest, den, or any shelter that they live in all the time, because they move around a lot.

Life Cycle Cheetahs can have babies at any time a year. The mother cheetah is pregnant for 3 months. They have their babies in the grass. Cheetahs are not monogamous. The babies are with their mother for about 14 to 18 months. When a cheetah is 18 months old it goes into the wild and can have babies of its own.Cheetahs live less than 10 years in the wild. In zoos cheetahs live 15 or more years.

Range and Population
Cheetahs live in a few dierent places. Most cheetahs live in Africa, Iran, and parts of India. In
Africa there are about 7,500. In Iran there are about 70 to 120 cheetahs. In India there are about 300. Now there are not that many cheetahs left in the wild. There are about 9,000 to 12,000 cheetahs left in the wild. In zoos there are about 1,400 cheetahs.

Threats A threat to cheetahs is that people kill them. Historically when people killed cheetahs they used to take their fur and make coats and things. Now there is a law that says people can not kill cheetahs. Some people still do. Some poachers kill cheetahs for their skins. The biggest threat to cheetahs is that they lose their habitat. Also some of their prey are going away or getting killed. Cheetahs do not have slow reproduction. The problem is that more than 90% of the cheetah http://ewasolions.wildlifedirect.org/files/2010/11/
cubs get killed before they are adults.

The cheetah cubs get killed a lot by other predators, like lions. Also the adult cheetahs do not get killed by predators, they get killed by humans. Some other threats to cheetahs are that all the cheetah’s genes are closely
identical. Which means if one cheetah gets a disease many other cheetahs get it too.

Solutions Some ways that people can help cheetahs not become extinct is by breeding cheetahs in zoos. Then when they are old enough to survive on their own, they should be let go. Some scientists are working to make cheetahs not extinct. The scientists are having a hard time because the cheetahs are shy and fast. Also scientists are capturing wild cheetahs and putting tags on them so they can know if they have captured that cheetah before. That way the scientists can count them. Sometimes they put radios on the collars and the http://blognew.sandiegozoo.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/ CheetahCub_001_Web.jpg
radio sends signal that tells the scientists where the
cheetahs are and how far they roam.
9
Conclusion I hope that we can help this fast and harmless animal. Cheetahs have the same right to live as we do. If you think about it, how would you feel if you had to run away every time someone got close to you. I hope that all people will try to save cheetahs from extinction.
