About TED and TEDx
TedxStellenbosch
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TEDspeakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. What does the x stand for? x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, selforganized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, selforganized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TEDxStellenbosch is a unique community in South Africa’s oldest university town that celebrates world-changing ideas A curated line-up of speakers and storytellers from across disciplines take to the stage to inspire an audience of between 400 and 500 thinkers and doers. The annual gathering sees a collision of great minds, whether young or old, although always with a sense of wonder and curiosity. The sparks ignited and the relationships started allow ideas to roll beyond the one day event. The ideas shared from the stage are only one component. It is the community that develops around the event that is the true magic of TEDxStellenbosch. Now it is your turn. Plant the seed of an idea wherever you can, and water it with passion and energy, so that it may one day sustain us all.

STUDENT COMPETITION WINNER
We launched a competition on the Stellenbosch University campus to find the perfect local candidate. We set out to find a student with exceptional leadership qualities and, most importantly, a new idea or initiative. After opening the floor to nominations, we let our Facebook community read through the options and vote for their favourite idea. More than a thousand votes later, we had our winner. Today, the nominee with the most votes will share the floor with our other speakers to explain his/her winning idea with us.
MILES KUBHEK A
The IT graduate turned gastronomist is the founder, owner, and believer behind the renowned Vuyo’s brand. Miles has always had the desire to make a meaningful mark on the world and in 2012 became the first person in the world to create a business based on a TV advert. The advert was about character “Vuyo” who starts off selling wors rolls from a food cart and then makes it “beeeg”.
Miles innovatively opened the first Vuyo’s restaurant in Braamfontein, serving fast-casual food, including gourmet-style South African staples. This restaurant, b ecause of its location, was a baptism of fire and misjudgement. He closed the Braamfontein store, and started using the dashing food trucks we see today. He now has another restaurant on the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto and four food trucks.
