New Works by Tina Buchholtz
Concealed Spaces New Works by Tina Buchholtz There is a hidden space in Tina Buchholtz’s home in Berlin, a tiny, unassuming room in her basement. Small in size, yet its role in her life is significant. This room is Buchholtz’s personal retreat to pause, synthesise and record her impressions, her observations of daily life and our society, in her signature paintings.
of the artist’s works marks one E ach of these retreats, a personal space
of rest and consolidation, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources. Nature plays a big role, its treatment by Man, but also its role as our own place of regeneration, found in works such as Reserve and Winterwoods. Buchholtz’s Christian beliefs find their own theme strand in works such as Freilassung (Liberation), which reflects a desire to let go, to offer freedom to people and ideas. Other works, such as Dragonfly Wedding are literally abuzz with joy, energy and vibrancy. Whatever the mood of each work, each captures a space that is personal to the artist and visualises her emotional discoveries. Newcomers to Tina Buchholtz’s work will discover canvases that are not created to be looked at, but looked into, and experienced. Each work offers a unique fusion of colour, light and structure, built up in a range of technically challenging processes that often demand several
weeks of work and patience. The artists signature ‘spatula lines’, applied individually by dipping the back of a spatula tool into acrylic paint, then rhythmically pressing this onto the canvas, are perhaps most easily recognisable. Where Buchholtz’s works have evolved considerably over the past two years is in her treatment of backgrounds. These have become more complex, more layered and also far more of a statement within the individual work. Where spatula lines dominated, and occasionally even covered an entire canvas in her older work, this recent series of paintings present their own ‘Concealed Spaces,’ created by applying and gently removing a number of base layers of paints and glazes. Layer upon layer is filed, rubbed and polished before accent spatula marks are finally added to mark each work’s completion. Placing Tina Buchholtz into an art historical canon leads us almost immediately

to the drip canvases of leading Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock (191256). Strong parallels exist between the rhythmic nature of Buchholtz’s work, in which the process of application is of equal importance to the final product. There is a gentler, more emotional side to the artist’s work however, and here we can look back in time find its roots and inspiration in the romantic landscapes of JMW Turner (1775-1851). ‘Concealed Spaces’ is Tina Buchholtz’s fifth show with Karin Weber Gallery in Hong Kong. Almost entirely self-taught, her somewhat unconventional career path first took her along a graphic design route before she found her true vocation in painting in the uncompromising style she continues to evolve, but has not fundamentally strayed from for the last fifteen years. We are delighted to welcome Tina Buchholtz back to our gallery and hope you will enjoy, and discover your own ‘Concealed Spaces’, in this exciting new series of her paintings.
Tina Buchholtz
