Echoing Harmony複調 Li Ting Ting 李 18.4 - 31.5.2019

INTRO 導言

‘Harmony’ is the overriding theme of Chinese Ink artist Li Ting Ting’s second exhibition at Karin Weber Gallery. Be it a violin or a solitary individual communing with nature, the current focus in her signature still-lives and landscapes is on emotions of restfulness, tranquillity, equilibrium and joy. With the evolution of her individual style to include relief and space, Li Ting Ting successfully creates new dimensions and multiple windows to offer differing viewpoints that pique the viewer’s curiosity and imagination. Layering of images, a critical element of the artist’s style, is cleverly used to introduce a third dimension as she experiments with infusion of the concept of time into her compositions. Images of objects, such as a violin, or of hermits are painstakingly created with overlapping washes to create suggestions of depth and time that reflect an unknown and infinite reality. Using waterfalls and mountains as her subjects in landscapes and a colour palette that leans heavily towards blues and greens draws on archaic Chinese painting references and once again emphasise the blending in with nature and infinity. Whilst exploring the theme of ‘Harmony’ in her landscapes, Li Ting Ting celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the past and pays homage to master ink painters such as famous Ming dynasty artists Tang Yin (14701524) and Dong Qichang (1555-1636). However, her contemporary execution and technique reveal a firm step into the future. Constancy and change are both reflected in a nuanced manner in Li Ting Ting’s delicate and celestial creations that blur the boundaries of traditional ink painting and Pop Art, both genres of great influence to the artist. Whilst pushing new frontiers and continuing her experimentation with the medium, Ting Ting continues to display an unrivalled mastery over her craft retaining its elegance and timelessness.

Since 2017, I have been attempting to incorporate a three dimensional element to my paintings. Space in a conventional landscape has been deconstructed and replaced. The interplay of positive and negative three dimensional spaces challenges viewers in their visual judgement. In my painting ‘Twin Spring’, the spring that appears at the foreground is actually positioned on the same plane as the background. A spring flows towards viewers as the foreground is empty. The stream on the left of the three-dimensional work is rendered in the same manner. The traditional mode of presentation and viewing of chinese ink painting is being challenged here, allowing space to create its own interpretation. A new series that I started two years ago, uses multiple layers to create the complete artwork just as musical compositions are constructed using different individual notes. Images of violins, wine glasses or of hermits are layered with several applications of paint. Such a polyphonylike approach creates effects of ups and downs. The traces of layering also suggest dimensions of time. Not only are they layers of images, but also layers of time which evocate an unknown, infinite, deep and fruitful world.
