The Other Story 知其二
13.9. - 3.11. 2018 Chloë Cheuk, Tsang Chui Mei, Tsang Tsui Shan curated by Ying Kwok
The Other Story Since the beginning of mankind, storytelling has been at the heart of human existence. From the very first carvings on the walls of caves to our online blogs and tweets of today - we are, and always have been, storytellers. It is through stories that we communicate, learn, and associate with one another. Stories are a container of all sorts, but there are different layers that need to be considered. Especially when it comes to artwork, our understanding of a piece of work should not stop after just seeing the narrative shown on canvas. This exhibition invites the audience to shift their focus to the non-fictional aspects of an art piece. Its three participating artists have dedicated themselves to pushing boundaries on the material and the medium used. I would like to invite you to focus on the making of the works, instead of the subject matter or theme presented, and sense the interaction between the artists and their chosen medium and materials. All three artists demonstrate a feminine sensitivity toward relationships, life, emotion and their surroundings. By projecting their feelings into art, the works touch our hearts in a way that is beyond words. Chloë Cheuk’s practice is motivated by ‘raw feelings’ and her desire to make her work in accordance. She uses everyday objects as her main medium, but combines them in specific settings to explore various opposing notions of interpersonal relationships and human emotional conditions such as love and loss, freedom and suppression, happiness and detachment. Chloë’s work lends expression and relief to her emotions, but it also relates to viewers’ daily experiences and memories, personally and collectively, establishing an intimate dialogue. The familiar daily objects she chooses are often found to echo our contemporary globalized world. I Am Fine, I Am Good, I Am Happy and Restless Reflection are two new works created for this exhibition to examine and depict the state of the human condition as if we were trapped within our own body and mind, repeatedly contemplating in a state of rumination.Referencing the feeling of being stuck in our own body even though we thought we were reaching out. Scattering Journey is a series of photographs of tablets’ screens, with subtle fingerprints tracing one’s movement in cyber space while being static in a physical space. 2
Tsang Chui Mei combines vigorous and textured brush strokes with delicate elements to create imaginative scenes. Vibrant colours, overlapping lines, perspectives and considered compositions constitute the tour de force capable of projecting emotions. Chui Mei usually starts with making marks such as dripping and dying on the canvas sub-consciously, while trying to imagine a scene and working it through layers by layers painstakingly until it achieves a visual depth, or, in the other extreme, void in space. Objects are translated into a series of narrow strips and organic shapes. By repetition and layering, Chui Mei builds a new order and visual landscape that encourages infinite imagination. Her paintings are the result of visual interactions with meticulously staged lines and fragmented shapes, presenting an organic and integrate process. Along with her balanced use of negative and positive space, contrasting but lavish colours, she presents the spectators with an ambiguous virtual space that is delicately spiritual. Blazing, Stabbing, and Roaring are three paintings where Chui Mei has infused different emotions while still encouraging open interpretations by the audience. Icy in the same series has a slightly different colour tone and energy that calms the forceful chaotic energy and acts as a balance. Tsang Tsui-Shan has directed films in various styles and genres, but the idea of love has always been an indispensable core element of her practice. Breathe In/ Breathe Out is her first dance video work, which explores the destructive relationship between men and women and the condition of personal internal renewal through the interaction, conflict and tension of two human bodies. Dancers perform routines that mimic the wind and passing of time, a return to earth, and communication with trees whose roots are deep and entangled. The moving image is used here as a vessel to accommodate an unstable and complicated scene of lust and love. Commissioned by HOME in Manchester, UK in 2015, this is a film with no dialogue but only bodily movements, featuring two young dance talents Huen Tin-Yeung Cliff and Jessica Cheung from local dance company Four Degrees Dance Laboratory, with music composed by Berlin based composer Eunice Martins.
