Master’s Thesis Roskilde University Copenhagen, Denmark Photoshop, Illustrator, Office QGIS

My master’s thesis for Nordic Urban Planning Studies focused on my two biggest interests in the field, sustainable mobility solutions, and public space design. Inspired by Jan Gehl’s work in public life studies and the realization that the relationship between mobility and public space can often be contentious, I sought to research how mobility is acted out in the city center of Copenhagen, which is praised for its human-scale public spaces. I focused on recent ‘alternative’ types of infrastructure that aim to integrate the plurality of activities that occur in public space, those being shared streets, bicycle streets, and living streets (woonerfs) of which there is one example in Copenhagen’s medieval core.

Research Question Problem Formulation

The concept of the human scale which has been presented by many as a new urban planning paradigm was a crucial piece of the project, as it highlights the need for cities to embrace both green mobility and public space, and its basis developed the analytical framework and research question. The research included observational mapping, field notes, and surveys in order to determine whether these infrastructure types adhered to the human scale paradigm through an analysis of determined criteria from the theoretical framework.

THE AVENUE: MULTICULTURAL CENTER OF THE TWIN CITIES CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Bachelor’s Thesis Studio University of Oregon St. Paul, Minnesota Revit, AutoCad, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign

The multi-cultural Center of the Twin Cities is the culmination of my Comprehensive Project for the University of Oregon’s Bachelor of Interior Architecture. I conducted a nine-month research and design project that was based on a social issue I felt passionate about. The Avenue is proposed to be a multicultural center in St. Paul, MN that assists in breaking down barriers and creating awareness of the growing diversity of the Twin Cities metro area. An existing historical 1912 dairy factory was adapted to design the 30,000-sq. ft. center. Every aspect of the project from program development, site choice, analysis, and design was up to my discretion. Floor 0 Rendered Plan

COPENHAGEN SUMMER SUNDAYS: AN OPEN STREETS INIATITIVE CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Project & Process of Sustainable Urban Development Malmö University Copenhagen, Denmark Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Office

For the course Project and Process Management of Sustainable Urban Development, we were tasked in groups to build a pre-study report on a possible sustainable urban development project based on either transplanting to a new location or suggesting a change to an existing project. We selected to work with the concept of Open Streets, which has been a successful initiative in many cities around the world. Copenhagen has had a yearly open street event since 2016, called Nørrebrogades Bilfrisøndag, and our prestudy suggested an expansion of such an event to a summer-long program in multiple neighborhoods. Our proposal integrated the visions of København Fællesskab and the city’s SDGs to embrace social and environmental sustainable development goals. The work included a stakeholder analysis, schedule and budget outlines, and beyond in order to understand the process of such a project. While the work was divided evenly, all diagrams presented and the proposal’s graphic design work was created by me.

COPENHAGEN DESIGN CENTER: PAPIRØEN CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

IARC Studio DIS Copenhagen, Denmark SketchUo, Illustrator, Photoshop, Podium

Completed during my spring semester at DIS, this interior architecture studio focused on Papirøen, a prominent island on the Copenhagen harbor, a part of the city that has undergone a massive transformation in the past years, from industrial warehouses to public spaces and modern residential flats. The focus was on a former paper storage hall in which half of the building was transformed into a design center for various fields represented in the industry, with the other half containing CPH street food. Adaptive reuse of the building presented both challenges and oppourtunity to embrace both the site’s industrial past and the new vision of a livable and sustainable harbor front.

Site Analysis

With flexible office space and conference areas, the space is about collaboration and open communication. The box-like additions aim to create transparency between the design industry and the city of Copenhagen, and materiality reflected Nordic aesthetics and light. The outdoor space along the waterfront was also transformed to allow residents to interact with the waterfront, an integral part of Copenhagen.

CYCLING IN SHARED URBAN SPACES: CASE STUDY AT TRIANGLEN CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Catching Urbanity Malmö University Malmö, Sweden QGIS, Illustrator, Photoshop, Office

This project was created during a methods course at Malmö University in which the focus was to develop an understanding of the various methodologies employed in urban studies. I selected to study the experience of cyclists surrounding Trianglen Station, one of the busiest areas of Malmö, yet lacks many separated bicycle tracks. Malmö has a strong desire to increase its cycle mode share, and I wanted to analyze cyclist’s perception of safety and comfort around Triangeln, as it is the area where some of the most bicycle accidents occur in the city. Through using various methods, including observational techniques, mapping, interviews, and QGIS, I sought to understand both cyclist’s subjective perspectives and their objective actions in selected intersections that featured various levels of shared infrastructure (with either vehicles or pedestrians).

COPENHAGEN FASHION FORUM CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Architecture Studio DIS Copenhagen, Denmark SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, Podium

For my architecture studio, while studying abroad at DIS, I was tasked with designing an extension to the Royal Danish Academy for a proposed fashion school, along with offices and a museum for the danish fashion sector. The site was located adjacent to the Opera House upon what was once a dry dock for shipbuilding. The cranes were labeled to be of historical significance, which presented a challenge to integrate them into the design. Working with these unique preconditions along with its prominent location in the city helped me increase my knowledge of site-specific design. Transformation Detail

Site & Form Diagrams

My vision was to present a modern representation of both KADK and the cranes through materiality and shape. The buildings form and material reflect the traditional form seen throughout the city, blending in with the surrounding buildings. The sky bridge is one of the defining features, which connects users to the site both immediatly to the historical cranes and overall with prime views of the nearby sites of Amalienborg and the Opera House, and acts as a performance and exhibition space.

WHOSE CAMPUS?- MALMÖ UNIVERSITY CAMPUS PLAN 2040 CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Making Urban Studies Malmö University Malmö, Sweden QGIS, Illustrator, Photoshop, Office

This project came out of the discussion of the ever-developing relationship that universities have with their respective host cities. Malmö University, only 25 years old, can tie its creation and development directly to the rise of the knowledge economy in the city of Malmö. The university is fast-growing and its Campus plan for 2040 seeks to create a comprehensive vision for it. This group project sought to investigate whether or not the plan embraces the current agendas of a neoliberal, creative city that is present in the city through an analysis of it efforts to engage student and employee needs through participatory planning methods, as well as understanding how the urban branding of the university is manifested in its campus.

OAK STREET FOOD MARKET CLASS: UNIVERSITY: LOCATION: PROGRAMS USED:

Working Drawings Studio University of Oregon Eugene, Oregon AutoCad, Illustrator, Photoshop SketchUp

This studio was focused on learning how to create comprehensive working drawings for construction documents. The site was a small commercial space in Eugene, Oregon, which was to be turned into a local food co-opv. The project was almost entirely interior, with only small cosmetic changes to the exterior. It features a food market for local foods and a demonstration kitchen, along with a small back office and storage. Details included precise wall and roof sections, custom cabinets, drop ceilings, and wall partitions. Additional focus was ff&e specifications, with a detailed electrical plan, reflected ceiling plan, and furniture and material specifications. The final drawings were 100% compliant with the Oregon building code and included all the typically used symbols, abbreviations, and markings.
