Name and General Characteristics:

 Name: The Northern Mockingbird  Scientific Name is Mimis Polyglottos  Length 8.3–10.2 in  Wingspan 12.2–13.8 in  Weight 1.6–2 oz  Its illegal to house a wild animal!!

Found in Texas, Florida, Canada and Mexico


Energy Transfer:


Ecology:  Open areas: hedges, fruiting bushes, and thickets.  Ground areas: rather grassy than bare spots.  Commonly found in parkland, cultivated land, suburban areas and in second growth habitat at low elevations.  Eat mainly insects in summer but switch to eating mostly fruit in fall and winter.  Animal prey are beetles, earthworms, moths, butterflies, ants, bees, wasps, grasshoppers, and sometimes small lizards.  They are both prey and predator!!


Evolution:

ď ś Survival: Harass birds that intrude on their territories, flying slowly around them or prancing toward them, legs extended, flaunting their bright white wing patches. ď ś Reproduce: One male will mate with more than two females. Male and female breeding pairs usually stay together for a whole breeding season, and sometimes for many years.


Fun Facts:  Known as Mimus polyglottos, which means "many-tongued mimic" in Latin language.  Northern mockingbirds are able to produce up to 200 different calls  They are able to identify humans, especially those that tried to destroy their nests.  Northern mockingbird can survive 8 years in the wild and up to 20 years in the captivity.  They are eaten by Blue Jays!!!
