FORUM OF ENERGY + CLIMATE CHANGE Our goal for SPP is to be constantly “alive full of events, and that its visitors would like to revisit it. Having this in mind, we created a Museum of Energy, that with some temporary and permanent exhibitions and events, the museum can creates its own stable audience and visitors. From a source of pollution and degradation, the factory turns to the core of the urban reformation and a public center of information on energy issues. The SPP pertains more than 50% of its equipment, although much is lost. The maintenance and enhancement of the surviving machinery is a key element of our proposal. The empty spaces accommodate the permanent and temporary exhibitions of the museum. The new entrance is located on the north side, and marks the opening of the SPP to the city and public space. All the extra required spaces are placed around SPP. The new entrance with small interventions covers the visitors! service without altering the interior of the factory with alterations or additions.

THE AVENUE THE AXIS
The whole proposal is characterised by strong geometrical axis. Those axis serve some purposes: to connect in an obvious and dynamic way the regions and neighberhoods that are about to be divided by the avenue or generally areas that are develloped next to the avenue. the integration of existing buildings, builted axis and summaries in the new urban net. the creation of new public spaces with diferent identity as well as different degree of public character. the creation of new movements through the city, adressed mainly to pedestrians and bicyclists that offer at the same time protection from the weather conditions. the creation of proper limits throughout areas whose limits are abstract and at the same time to shape a new facade for several of those areas. to intersect several times with the new avenue in a form of building-bridges and in this way to connect the new urban net with the avenue.
THE AXIS-BUILDINGS AND BUILDING-BRIDGES Avenida do Mal. Gomes da Costa
Initially the proposal is involved with the drawing of the new avenue that connects Praca Imprar with Rua de %RDYLVWD The design of the avenue is based mostly in the urban vacancies and the directions that those create. Moreover the curves that the avenue follows are the smoothest possible.
The main characteristic of the axis that were mentioned above is that they combine buildings, roads and movement for pedestrians. Moreover those axis pass over the new avenue in a form of building-bridges. Those elements mainly target to give a special new character to the area of intervention and at the same time to offer recognition in this place. What is more is that the intersection points created by the new avenue and those building-bridges create connections between the motion on the avenue and the motion throughout the rest of the city. This is achieved by placing the stations of public transport underneath those bridges and link those two by vertical movements. Moreover, a certain morphology was attempted to be applied in which the volume of the buildings is lifted off the ground so as to create a pilotis (protection from weather conditions), and at the same time there is a longitudal division of the volume. This is for giving the opportunity to the designer of the building to treat each facade differently as those axis-buildings will stand on the limits of different public spaces that demands different scale and rythm.
THE ESPLANADA, THE MARKET, AND THE NEW STADIUM
03
Together with the rest of the axis a new esplanada is created along an axis perpendicular to the new avenue crossing the area just above Praca Imprar. In this way is attempted a connection between this area, which is nowadays isolated (as there is no link with any roads), with the new avenue. In the middle of the esplanada there is a summarie of large scale buildings that give the impression to shape the half part of a symmetry. Moreover this axis of symmetry meets a big school complex at its end. The way WKDW WKH SURSRVDO LV LQYROYHG LQ WKDW SRLQW LV WR HPSKDVL]H WKLV V\PPHWU\ E\ SODFLQJ VRPH QHZ ODUJH VFDOH buildings that accomplish the symmetrical shape. At the same time the free space created among the old and the new buildings offers a new public space just in front of the school complex and a new commercial center, a new roofed market underneath this public space that turns the hole area into a live dynamic space interacting with the school and the surrounding neighberhoods. Moreover a new football stadium is placed at the endpoint of this esplanada and in this way this public gestur is being complete and the whole area is being upgraded. 27

GENERAL OBJECTIVES 7KH PDLQ REMHFWLYH RI WKH SURSRVDO ZDV WR RUJDQL]H WKH new public space according to the urban elements that already exist in the intervention area and in this way to integrate the proposal into the existing urban system. MAIN OBSERVATIONS + INITIATIVES As it was mentioned in the general presentation of the area above, large-scale habitation units dominate the central part of the intervention area. It goes without saying that the elements on which one should base the general lines of the new urban net should be those large-scale buildings. Moreover if one follows the line that starts at the school and move parallel to the three volumes will meet another habitation unit complex that has the same orientation with this line. What is most impressive is that this line consists the axis of symmetry of two streets that start from rua da Crasto, have identical angles related to rua da Crasto and both have the same orientation towards the line-axis. 7KLV OLQH VHHPV WR EH SHUIHFW WR RUJDQL]H WKH ZKROH SURposal as it runs through the whole area, integrates into the urban net, elements that seem to be irrelevant and at the same time offers the opportunity to create public spaces that upgrade parts of the area and give perspectives of development. MAIN DESIGN The avenue has, as a starting point, Praca do Imperio and as an obligatory crossing point the only vacant space of rua da Crasto. Having those two stable points, the curve of the avenue was designed according to the most natural and functional way for the drivers to follow. In order to fortify the idea of the axis and FUHDWH WKH SXEOLF VSDFHV WKDW ZLOO GHĂ€QH WKLV D[LV LQ UHDO WHUPV the three-volume habitation unit complex is being mirrored and three more strong volumes are built in a symmetrical way so that a common public space is created among them. The market offers perspectives of development to the area and gives the three new buildings a strong role into the new urban face of the area, as they could host commercial use at the ground and underground level. What is more, the fact that the market is

placed at the same ground level as the public space, which is created in the second case, puts those two new public spaces into a tight connection so that they are really related one another. The free space created among the old and the new buildings offers a new public space just in front of the school complex and a new commercial center, a new roofed market underneath this public space that turns the hole area into a live dynamic space interacting with the school and the surrounding neighborhoods Another, very important element of the composition is the esplanade. The esplanade is a secondary strong axis that is perpendicular to the main axis of composition as well as to the curve of the new avenue. The esplanade serves a really important role, as it connects the inner part of the intervention area with the avenue and the basic axis of composition in a dynamic way. Especially WKH FURVVLQJ SRLQW RI WKH WZR D[LV LV VWURQJO\ HPSKDVL]HG E\ WKH public space that is created among the old and new habitation units complex, situated along the main axis. Those two parts are divided by a street that passes next to the hotel. In seek of that goal two actions are taken: The part of the street that passes next to the intervention area is used as part of the square that is to be created so that the connection between the two public spaces is achieved. 7KH PDLQ FKDUDFWHULVWLF RI WKH RUJDQL]DWLRQ RI WKH URXWHV DQG SDVVDJHV WKURXJKRXW WKH RSHQ DLU public space is the use of concrete elements in a shape of a pentagon. So, the second action taken for the connection of the two public spaces is the structural vocabulary of the proposal. The way the new square is structured is based on a pattern made of hexagons. The hexagons were chosen so as to remind the pentagons one meets throughout the rest of the area, which were not used, as pentagons cannot create a useful and practical pattern. 7KH ZKROH SURSRVDO LV RUJDQL]HG DFFRUGLQJ WR WKLV SDWWHUQ PDGH RI KH[DJRQV 7KH WKUHH EDVLF HOHments of the new square are the following: 1.The hexagonal concrete elements that create itineraries and surfaces on different levels. 2.The water that covers parts of those surfaces. 3.The water highlights some passages and at the same time offers a base that uplifts the geometry of the church and generally upgrades the quality of the public space. 4.The hexagonal volumes that are following the hexagonal grid. 5.They mark points, or create bases for columns (the columns of the commercial gallery roof), or simply surfaces of rest and play. Finally, there is to be mentioned some additional elements of WKH SURSRVDO WKH SULVPDWLF HOHPHQWV DQG WKH EHQFKHV DOZD\V designed according the hexagonal pattern. 0RUH VSHFLĂ€F WKH SULVPV ZHUH FUHDWHG E\ D GLYLVLRQ RI WKH KH[DJRQ LQWR WULDQJOH DQG WKH\ VHUYH WZR SXUSRVHV Firstly, they consist elements that divide the route that can be also used by cars with the rest of the square. Therefore, entrepreneurs running model businesses based on local identity and resources, like agro-tourism units and wineries, can now share their achievements, creating a pool of innovative business ideas and consequently a good practices database. Nevertheless, good practices are not originated from entrepreneurs alone. Local authorities, active citizens and NGOs can equally contribute to this development model. Personal and collective initiatives such as cultural events and promotion of native traditions compose a vivid society able to support the ambitious vision of the Program. A book with all the details of the project and the techniques of “water monumentsâ€? restoration is currently being prepared and a documentary on sustainable water management is being made. SAP also organizes conferences about critical issues of the Aegean Islands! development such as: the island!s tourist product (i.e. Lesvos, Ios, Naxos, Kea, Skiathos) and sustainable water resources management (i.e. Syros) featuring experts and attended by the local community (authorities, media and citizens). In 2007-2009 SAP has played a crucial role in mobilizing public opinion throughout the country and successfully preventing new planning legislation for massive modern second home development. This legislation would have been destructive for the environment of the islands, subsidizing huge construction projects along the Aegean coast, causing irreversible consequences. 50
Sharing a Committee of 10 of the largest NGOs of Greece, SAP succeeded in persuading the majority of the National Committee for Land Use Planning to oppose the then government!s proposals. SAP is unique, because it represents the most considered and organized civil society initiative yet made to preserve the natural resources and cultural heritage of the Aegean Islands. It is also targeted to all the age groups from the youngsters at school to the adults who through their activities contribute to sustainable development. The idea of SAP was conceived by Costa Carras (now President of the SAP Committee) and it was inspired by the “Voice of the Aegean documentary by Lydia Carras. Very crucial was the innovative approach of Kriton Arsenis (SAP!s former director, currently M.E.P.) of winning over local opinion of all ages, starting with the youth.

14 THE TENNIS BALL CHAIR The objective of this project was to design and manufacture a real size furniture. The concept of our creation came together by REVHUYLQJ WZR GLIIHUHQW LQFLGHQWV 7KH ÀUVW DQG REYLRXV MXGJLQJ from the result was the geometry of a tennis ball and the fact that is formed by two identical pieces tight together in a 3 dimensional way. The second observation that conducted our main idea was an original technique to peal an orange using only one cut. The knife cuts around the orange skin following the exact same path as the white line on a tennis ball leaving as well two identical pieces of orange skin that can be removed and reassembled in the exact same position. This short study inspired us to design two identical chairs that form a complete geometry when attached together. The design process resulted in a twin system sofa that imitated the tennis ball only instead of a diameter of 6.7cm our ball of sofas was about 1 meter and a half. For its construction we used wooden frames whose assemblage formed a 3dimensional grid giving the desirable geometry of the double level curve. Pillows were then attached to the grid while the exterior surface was covered with yellow fabric so as to resemble WR WKH FRQFHSWҋV VWDUWLQJ SRLQW 7KH ÀQLVKHG SURGXFW KDG JLYHQ an original and elegant way of having two extremely comfortable and amusing sofas taking up a minimum of free space while offering a unique identity to the surrounding space.

We attempted to solve the problem of accessibility to water and public space by expanding the waterfront and utilizing water from the mountains to create a seasonal system of rivers and ponds. Developing architecture is required to create public space as well. By this concept, we insure expansion of designed public space along with designed urban space. Gray water will be harvested and recycled to maintain water levels during the dry season. Athens does not have enough access to the water, despite it being a seaside city. There is also a problem with public space; green parks are not being utilized by the people of the city.

The pond development system is inspired from an urban expansion methodology, applied in Roman Empire. Due to lack of funding a Roman Emperor who desired to rebuilt Rome, decided to invest all his resources on an original idea of growing the city. He marked a series of crucial future crossroads throughout his imaginary capital, and realized an extended and detailed construction, only limited around the four corners of each crossroad. This way he created the conjuctions of the principal avenues, thus tracing the whole network of his urban design. Filling those gaps would complete his initial genious concept even after he was long gone.

iNTRODUCTION The goal of our work is the REDEFiNiTiON of the relationship between MAN and DAYliGHT. We believe that a building!s passive adjustment to new conditions doesn!t offer the possibility for the user to intervene in this space in an iNSTiNCTiVE way. protective shell

16 LiGHT Daylight undertakes an active and primary role in the realization of our project as the light itself and its shadow comprise its structural elements. The idea is that each quantity of light which enters the space corresponds with one human unit. The skin of the building adjusts to man in an organic way just like the pupil of the eye adjusts to every light condition. The user, through his weight. The importance of light UHVXOWV ÀQDOO\ LQ D SHUVRQDO GLVFRYHU\ ZKHUH HDFK SHUVRQ FRQWLQXally reveals a new and different reality of the same space. The emission of light at night will contrast with its absorption during the day enlarge the spectrum of possibilities. MOTiON In our project the movement of light in the space is directly interrelated with the movement of the people in the space. In our concept, light is an element for which the user is critically responsible. With its own motion the space immediately acquires theatrical dimensions. The visitor seems to be the actor in a play with a spotlight focused on him while the city is his audience. In this space a drama unfolds, for which the user is the one and only responsible. TiME However, what has been reported up to now can only be considered incomplete. Because the meaning of light as well as the meaning of movement cannot be considered without the dimension of time. MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT: AREA OF PROTECTION AROUND THE TREES

trees
The motive of the synthetic proposal was the preservation of the trees and the area of “protection” around each one of them. A pattern formed by circles of variable diameter wraps around the trees and points the accesses and the limits of the square, which are connected with the pedestrian streets around it. In that way the square gains a new identity and character. The microclimate of the area is optimized by adding water elements and trees at the northern part of the square. Green areas and soft surfaces wrap around WKH WUHHV DQG DV ZH GLVWDQFH IURP WKHP ZH ÀQG VODWH tiling. The basic principle of the proposal is a mild intervention, the retention of all trees and the reuse of a great part of the prior tiling. The scene is placed in the center and it has multiple uses. The urban equipment is enriched with benches, chairs, lamps, a playground and new stands.
