PHASE THREE THESIS

The Rio Hondo Channel possesses many tangible and intangible connections that generate urban ecological values. These values already exist throughout the alignment of the channel. These values are hardly used and explored by the many residents and potential users living in Rosemead. Facing endangering situations like the drought and decline of species, it is imperative to create an environment that both serves the functions the human society needs while facilitating other habitats. It is also important to improvise and design with delicacy – the application of delicacy gives opportunity. The investigation of land use: residential, commercial, industrial and noxious weeds, suggested a major division created by the Rio Hondo Channel. This segregation affects how users use the area. This implication gives us enough insight to implement elements that produce awe and curiosity. Circulation is a key factor in creating a dynamic that makes the site unique and progressive. Placing dots throughout the site plan where noxious weed growth was a technique that was inspired by the spontaneous growth that occurs in such an engineered infrastructure. The parcel of land, which is ultimately dead space, can prove to be important as a focal point. This plot of land is around a heavy flow of circulation, whether it is vehicular or pedestrian traffic. Embellishment of the area is important to express the complexity and majestic landscape. Considering the vast sky and flat skyline that the area possess, adding vertical posts can create an intricate yet simple field that can hold, circulate, and entice users.

The Rio Hondo Channel possess wonderful engineered infrastructure and a variety of ecological urban layers that many residents and users of the sight do not take account of. Pin pointing urban ecological elements that do not have much value to most residents and users, we found the opportunity to implement an installation that turned this field of mapping into a tall garden. The overall sight has complex processes happening, but they are not taken account of because the area has no spatial markers or indicators that help create spatial character. Taking the mapping of the noxious weeds and taking into consideration dead and vacant space, a field was found. This field would be marked by tall verticals colored red – red because it is a striking color. The height of these verticals will vary – the heights were collected from already existing urban variables (homes, industrial buildings, cars, heights.) However, because of the lack of a skyline and the vastness of the sky, these heights were tripled in order to create a strong vertical vista. Avoiding the eve of even more infrastructure, the adding of verticals will highlight the sky and make users and pass-byers look up. Making users look up will be the beginning of more spatial occupancy and exploration – something that the site and the whole alignment of the Rio Hondo Channel can use. The installation of the verticals can also create ecological program, taking into consideration the spacing, spread, and height of each vertical. In some instances, the verticals will be extremely clumped together, making great nesting and niching areas for biota and ecologies already living in the channel. Although there is a great bike trail and the circulation paths work great, there is a sense of awe and exaggeration missing that entices and invites. These verticals, with its varying heights, spread, and bright red color, can produce this flamboyance the site can use in order to invite the exploration. The humor and enticement from something so simple but exaggerated can captivate more people. The overall focal point of this project is to invite the use of so much dead space and unveil the complex field noxious weeds create. This play on perception will unveil a different attraction that is unimaginable in such a stern, concrete infrastructure. The creation of this field and the implementation of verticals will create a tall and intricate garden of red verticals easily noted by most. The 2-acre site will serve as a main focal point. There will be hardly any alterations besides the vertical fields and implementation of water-detaining soils and planting of low-water requiring plants. Because the space is currently dead space, the addition of captivating wild flowers and exaggerated verticals invites users into treading around the site. This site will also be an educational center on drought tolerant plants and explain the importance of the Rio Hondo Channel. Because of the warm weather and usually sunny climate, building a structure would be unnecessary – the site will be open for any type of user. It’s openness will make it a malleable site and overall multi-purpose.
