In the living room, an emerald-green Moroccan pouf, an assortment of printed pillows, and a royal purple throw add just that, while a series of Rothko-inspired paintings above the sofa (created by Cass herself!) ties the varied color scheme together. In the center of it all, a brass Sarreid chest—a vintage listing purchased on Etsy—offsets the room’s more traditional elements. “I wanted something glamorous, but I also needed to be able to put my feet on it,” Cass explains. “That ruled out Lucite or glass, and wood felt too heavy. This chest was perfect. Plus, it provides extra storage.”

Elizabeth Mollen, owner of Stone Textile, gives us a sneak peek at her collection of chic home accessories. Gathering inspiration from fashion, architecture, vintage jewelry, Art Deco and Austin’s Scarborough Building, Elizabeth Mollen has imagined a collection of polished home accessories fit for any modern nest. The line features tabletop accessories, like place mats and napkin rings, as well as pillows, blankets and fabric by the yard. Mollen, who grew up in Chicago, fell in love with Austin while studying fashion design at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, Mollen and her husband, Russell, whom she met at UT, moved to Los Angeles. In LA she built up her fashion cred while working for fashion design brand Riser Goodwyn. When Mollen and her husband returned to Austin, she knew she wanted to continue her textile design career. “I love designing my own fabrics. My grandmother was an antiques dealer and I use the jewelry she’s given me to inspire my textile patterns.” Stay tuned for the online debut of the Stone Textile collection in November.

THE SQUARE LAYERS FLOOR PILLOW 26X26 COTTON/RAYON/POLY BLEND, LEATHER TRIM
AUSTIN HOME: What can we expect from Collection #2? ELIZABETH MOLLEN: I’m going to play on some of the same themes but add more color. In fashion, pops of color are big right now and that can also apply to home decor.
AH: How was jumping from fashion design to home décor? EM: It wasn’t very difficult. My favorite part of the fashion design process was sourcing
and discovering new fabrics and textures. I knew that I wanted to carry that over to home design. Of course there was a lot of research to be done, like finding the best pillow insert and learning about fabric printing and laser cutting.
AH: Why Stone Textile? EM: Stone is taken from my mother’s maiden name. Her parents, my grandparents,
had an antique business. They were collectors and appreciated unique designs. Stones are thought of as hard objects while Textiles are soft. I like the play on words. My whole aesthetic is mixing hard/edgy materials such as leather and metal-based textiles with soft, sanded cottons.
AH: Any plans to open a storefront in Austin? EM: It would be ideal to have my studio space and store front in one building.
I love what’s going on on the East Side of town, and it would be great to be a partof that creative and artistic neighborhood. The space would have to have an industrial feel with a lot of natural light.

12.20.2011 A HOLIDAY TABLETOP BUILT FOR TWO
Hosting Christmas dinner is a tad intimidating, especially when doing it for the very first time, but I’m quite excited to get to give it a try this year. To feel fully prepared, I decided a tabletop dry run was in order. Here’s a sneak peak of the latest attempt! Keeping things in the loft life spirit, I’m currently trending away from traditional holiday decor and going in a more graphic direction instead. Since we’re keeping holiday decorations to a minimum the table features a nontraditional color palette of black, white, silver and gold. I love how the print on our StoneTextile place mats pop against our white table. StoneTextile’s elegant black napkin ring kicks up the glam factor, reflecting the special occasion. I must say I would probably prefer a more modern looking set of flatware {like these!}, but we’ve yet to invest in them yet. My tabletop staples are always flowers and shine. Being in California I get to mix my favorite bloom, peonies in December. Love that! I decided to pair them with a more seasonally appropriate red berry. I also used my grandmothers antique mirrored tray to reflect all the candlelight once evening falls. While I may change out my tea lights for black votives and add in a few taller tapers for the main event, the final table design is well on its way. This is in large part to Apartment 34 sponsor StoneTextile and the sweet Elizabeth who graciously wants to help make your tabletop lovely too! I’m thrilled to announce one more exclusive holiday giveaway A $100 shopping spree at StoneTexitle!
